Assuming Moore is the next HC (and Minter and JayBaugh go with Jim)...how would you build the staff?

Submitted by MaizeBlueA2 on January 24th, 2024 at 7:26 PM

Nothing is confirmed, but obviously all signs point to Sherrone Moore being named the next head coach at Michigan.

If the rumors of Minter going with Harbaugh are true (again, absolutely nothing confirmed, and hopefully Michigan puts up a salary and title that makes it VERY tough)...and assuming Jay Harbaugh goes with his dad, but everyone else (including Ben Herbert) says...

...how would YOU like to see Moore fill out the rest of the staff?

  • Do you think Moore should remain OC and calling plays?
  • Does Newsome move to OL?
  • What assistant coaches would you like to see added? (sorry, Partridge is not eligible to work at Michigan again)
  • Should Moore add someone with HC experience to his staff?
  • What would you like to see happen with the DC spot if Minter is indeed headed to LA?
  • Do you hire someone from Ravens tree again?

I just hope they are willing to pay the big bucks for good assistants.  If there's one lesson from JH's turn around post 2020 is the absolute necessity of getting top shelf coordinators.

I'm hoping John has another wunderkind ready for a new challenge or Jay has been training for this opportunity the last 3 years. This will be a big test for Moore as we know Harbaugh was great at hiring assistants but no idea on Moore

  • OC: Hart will probably be the lead OC if he stays
  • QBs/Pass game I assume Campbell is gone as he was the JJ whisperer - ideally you use this space to poach a guy well versed in QB development
  • Newsome to OL
  • Elston to co-DC with Clink
  • Young ravens guy for LBs or S

There's more than enough older experience/career college guys on the staff now. Michigan will be saving money on the HC so in turn should direct money to hiring the best assistants money can buy, the proverbial Beyonces that can also coach.

Herbert’s not going anywhere. Strength coach in the NFL is not a position of power like it is in college. I think I heard Sam say it’s a lower paying job at that level too.  Hell tons of NFL players have their own personal trainers.

The offense wasn't exactly a strength last year,

We were one of the most efficient offenses in the country, finishing #5 in points per drive and was a borderline top 10 offense according to SP+. Don’t get caught looking into raw stats, Michigan played at a very slow pace which impacts those numbers.

I don't want to hear "bring someone with head coaching experience" bullshit. We're did that with Howard and it's been a mess. Either you're qualified and able or you aren't. He learned from Jimmy and others. If he's not ready without a crutch then he shouldn't have the fucking job

Why not just make every hire internal, you know for the culture, since that seems to be the main reason for hiring Moore in the first place.

Clinkscale to DC full time, and Hart to OC, it'll be great.

I honestly think they should offer Jay and Minter as much money as possible to keep them. I'm not sure who the the OC should be, but hopefully it comes from someone who has a good offense.

Moore - HC

Hart and Cambell - co-OCs

Newsome - OL

They can go find whoever they want for tight end coach, also not going to pretend that I know who the top special teams coaching candidates are

Leonhard - DC/LB

Why does everyone assume Minter is gone? Maybe Jim wants someone with a little more NFL experience? Minter has a few years as a DB coach in the league and while he’s been lights out in college, who knows?

Moore is young and inexperienced in this area. He should delegate as much as possible to coordinators and position coaches, at least for now.

Hire the Ravens LB coach (Orr) as Co-DC.

Repeat the “ask John” process, but this time call Shanahan and ask for an up-and-comer to hire as OC. Bonus points if he’s a WR coach.

Keep Newsome (OL), Hart, Elston, and Clink. Indifferent on Campbell. Shift Bellamy into an off-field role.

Minter is gone.  Guarantee part of Harbaugh's deal with the Chargers is to throw so much cash at Minter, he couldnt possibly say no to the Chargers.

Jay is gone.  Reason?  Read above.

If Sherrone gets the HC job (I'd prefer Warde look for the best coach in the whole country, and not just coronate Sherrone), Sherrone definitely needs an OC.  38 year-old, basically first-year HC at a major college football program should not be HC and OC.  Get Sherrone the best OC who likes to run the ball more than throw the ball.  He'll fit right in.

Since Jim is no longer at UM, John no longer feels an obligation to get his brother a DC from the Raven's staff.  Would we all like another DC from the Raven's staff?  Of course.  This time, it's much less likely.

Obviously, John Harbaugh’s ties to Michigan are not as deep / strong as Jim’s.  But, there’s certainly “family ties” between the Harbaugh’s and Michigan.   John grew up in Ann Arbor.

The key will be for Jim, John, and Sherrone to maintain some type of relationship - and, use Ann Arbor as a stopping point for talented young coaches.

We need to hire 4 new people (Jim, Minter Jr, Minter Sr, and Jay).

For the DC, OC, and OL, promote from within.  Bring in a WR coach and move Bellamy to Safties. Add three new coaches for LB, TE, and special teams.
