Assuming Moore is the next HC (and Minter and JayBaugh go with Jim)...how would you build the staff?
Nothing is confirmed, but obviously all signs point to Sherrone Moore being named the next head coach at Michigan.
If the rumors of Minter going with Harbaugh are true (again, absolutely nothing confirmed, and hopefully Michigan puts up a salary and title that makes it VERY tough)...and assuming Jay Harbaugh goes with his dad, but everyone else (including Ben Herbert) says...
...how would YOU like to see Moore fill out the rest of the staff?
- Do you think Moore should remain OC and calling plays?
- Does Newsome move to OL?
- What assistant coaches would you like to see added? (sorry, Partridge is not eligible to work at Michigan again)
- Should Moore add someone with HC experience to his staff?
- What would you like to see happen with the DC spot if Minter is indeed headed to LA?
- Do you hire someone from Ravens tree again?

Mike Hart to OC.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:33 PM ^
Gotta keep Hart and keep him happy.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:34 PM ^
Yep--Hart, maybe Campbell. More likely Hart.
Clink or Elston to DC?
I also think that Jim will help Moore out when needed like his brother did for him. Moore and Jim obviously really, really love each other.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:37 PM ^
Campbell could be the Passing Game Coordinator if he wants another title. It sounds like retaining him is key for Jadyn Davis and Carter Smith.
January 24th, 2024 at 9:04 PM ^
One could say they love the shit out of each other
January 24th, 2024 at 7:31 PM ^
I would ask Coach Moore what he needs from me. Idk, he's taking care of it, not going to worry or question the man's decisions.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:31 PM ^
I just hope they are willing to pay the big bucks for good assistants. If there's one lesson from JH's turn around post 2020 is the absolute necessity of getting top shelf coordinators.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:31 PM ^
I'm hoping John has another wunderkind ready for a new challenge or Jay has been training for this opportunity the last 3 years. This will be a big test for Moore as we know Harbaugh was great at hiring assistants but no idea on Moore
January 24th, 2024 at 7:33 PM ^
First order of business is to do whatever it takes to retain Ben Herbert.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:33 PM ^
- OC: Hart will probably be the lead OC if he stays
- QBs/Pass game I assume Campbell is gone as he was the JJ whisperer - ideally you use this space to poach a guy well versed in QB development
- Newsome to OL
- Elston to co-DC with Clink
- Young ravens guy for LBs or S
There's more than enough older experience/career college guys on the staff now. Michigan will be saving money on the HC so in turn should direct money to hiring the best assistants money can buy, the proverbial Beyonces that can also coach.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:57 PM ^
Campbell gone ? Tell that to Jayden Davis’s father …
January 24th, 2024 at 9:03 PM ^
Imperative keeping Campbell on the payroll to retain Davis and a prayers chance keeping the Florida kid.
January 24th, 2024 at 9:23 PM ^
There isnt any more young Ravens coaches left and why would the Ravens continue the internship? It's Jim's time to start his intern program.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:33 PM ^
Want to keep Herbert first and foremost. Then Mike Hart and Mike Elston. Then Clinkscale. All three were critical pieces to this year’s success.
January 24th, 2024 at 8:06 PM ^
So the S&C is more important than on field coaches that also recruit? I find it hard to believe there aren't two dozen S&C coaches just as good that couldn't be found in short order when paying $1M.
January 24th, 2024 at 8:18 PM ^
I don't think you realize how important he was as a motivator/mentor. Hard to find that on someone who is also good at his job.
January 24th, 2024 at 8:58 PM ^
Herbert is a MOST keeper!
January 24th, 2024 at 7:34 PM ^
Herbert’s not going anywhere. Strength coach in the NFL is not a position of power like it is in college. I think I heard Sam say it’s a lower paying job at that level too. Hell tons of NFL players have their own personal trainers.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:48 PM ^
I hope you’re correct but I also watched how much huge respect Harbaugh has for Herbert. I would suspect Harbaugh is not going to get push back getting his hand selected staff paid.
This is about what Herbert wants to do. Does he prefer working with college kids and living in Ann Arbor?
January 24th, 2024 at 7:56 PM ^
I believe Herbert signed a 5 year contract extension yesterday. If that's the case, PHEW!!!
January 24th, 2024 at 7:34 PM ^
Give Brian Griese a call.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:39 PM ^
I was just scrolling to see if anybody suggested this before leaving my own comment to that effect. It's time to come home, if he's interested. We even have a couple of Brock Purdy-like QBs for him.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:42 PM ^
Here's hoping he has some free time next week.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:43 PM ^
Yes please.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:35 PM ^
Promote Hart to OC. Next year I like our chances of running the ball really well. If we don't hire Sherrone I would be very surprised.
January 24th, 2024 at 8:09 PM ^
Nee OC and new HC? I'd like some new blood on O, at least co-OC. The offense wasn't exactly a strength last year, and its losing a lot.
January 24th, 2024 at 10:10 PM ^
The offense wasn't exactly a strength last year,
We were one of the most efficient offenses in the country, finishing #5 in points per drive and was a borderline top 10 offense according to SP+. Don’t get caught looking into raw stats, Michigan played at a very slow pace which impacts those numbers.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:36 PM ^
I don't want to hear "bring someone with head coaching experience" bullshit. We're did that with Howard and it's been a mess. Either you're qualified and able or you aren't. He learned from Jimmy and others. If he's not ready without a crutch then he shouldn't have the fucking job
January 24th, 2024 at 7:41 PM ^
To me that's a really weird thing to make binary, seems to me that coaching would be a sliding scale and you'd improve as you go
January 24th, 2024 at 7:42 PM ^
Howard didn't have any head coaching experience
January 24th, 2024 at 7:58 PM ^
Correct but he brought in Martelli to help him learn the ropes. That hasn't worked out. Though I'd say the difference is he didn't need a former head coach. He just needed a staff familiar with NCAA rules. Moore doesn't need anything like that.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:37 PM ^
Why not just make every hire internal, you know for the culture, since that seems to be the main reason for hiring Moore in the first place.
Clinkscale to DC full time, and Hart to OC, it'll be great.
I honestly think they should offer Jay and Minter as much money as possible to keep them. I'm not sure who the the OC should be, but hopefully it comes from someone who has a good offense.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:38 PM ^
Moore - HC
Hart and Cambell - co-OCs
Newsome - OL
They can go find whoever they want for tight end coach, also not going to pretend that I know who the top special teams coaching candidates are
Leonhard - DC/LB
January 24th, 2024 at 10:13 PM ^
Leonhard has never coached linebackers in his career, so that would be an odd fit. We already have a linebacker coach opening and Minter leaving would open the additional DC spot. Makes more sense to just hire an actual linebacker coach
January 24th, 2024 at 7:39 PM ^
Nick saban is available
January 24th, 2024 at 7:39 PM ^
Why does everyone assume Minter is gone? Maybe Jim wants someone with a little more NFL experience? Minter has a few years as a DB coach in the league and while he’s been lights out in college, who knows?
January 24th, 2024 at 7:46 PM ^
He's the best coach on the staff and it's been noted Harbaugh wants to bring him with him since he runs a NFL style defense currently.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:48 PM ^
Well I mean he’s a great coach, but the only place I’ve seen it noted is by posters on here.
January 24th, 2024 at 10:14 PM ^
He interviewed for the Eagles job last year, so he’s on NFL radars already. The Ravens defense, which obviously Minter runs, is the talk of the league. Making Minter’s name even more popular.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:48 PM ^
He interviewed with the Eagles last year, and they just fired their eventual hire. Meanwhile, his defense won Michigan a national championship. He's going to get a shot in the NFL, and it seems like he wants one.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:40 PM ^
Moore is young and inexperienced in this area. He should delegate as much as possible to coordinators and position coaches, at least for now.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:41 PM ^
Hire the Ravens LB coach (Orr) as Co-DC.
Repeat the “ask John” process, but this time call Shanahan and ask for an up-and-comer to hire as OC. Bonus points if he’s a WR coach.
Keep Newsome (OL), Hart, Elston, and Clink. Indifferent on Campbell. Shift Bellamy into an off-field role.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:50 PM ^
I'm cool with this idea. I hope John keeps throwing coaches our way.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:41 PM ^
I'd start with Lance Leopold as the head coach.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:42 PM ^
Minter is gone. Guarantee part of Harbaugh's deal with the Chargers is to throw so much cash at Minter, he couldnt possibly say no to the Chargers.
Jay is gone. Reason? Read above.
If Sherrone gets the HC job (I'd prefer Warde look for the best coach in the whole country, and not just coronate Sherrone), Sherrone definitely needs an OC. 38 year-old, basically first-year HC at a major college football program should not be HC and OC. Get Sherrone the best OC who likes to run the ball more than throw the ball. He'll fit right in.
Since Jim is no longer at UM, John no longer feels an obligation to get his brother a DC from the Raven's staff. Would we all like another DC from the Raven's staff? Of course. This time, it's much less likely.

January 24th, 2024 at 8:10 PM ^
Obviously, John Harbaugh’s ties to Michigan are not as deep / strong as Jim’s. But, there’s certainly “family ties” between the Harbaugh’s and Michigan. John grew up in Ann Arbor.
The key will be for Jim, John, and Sherrone to maintain some type of relationship - and, use Ann Arbor as a stopping point for talented young coaches.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:42 PM ^
Isn't denard on the recruiting staff? Wonder if he might find an on-field coaching role
January 24th, 2024 at 7:43 PM ^
We need to hire 4 new people (Jim, Minter Jr, Minter Sr, and Jay).
For the DC, OC, and OL, promote from within. Bring in a WR coach and move Bellamy to Safties. Add three new coaches for LB, TE, and special teams.
January 24th, 2024 at 8:14 PM ^
Promote HC, OC, and DC from within? Risky. At least an external co-oc with great passing schemes.
January 24th, 2024 at 7:46 PM ^
Jim will absolutely help Sherrone with possible assistant coaches - the NFL connections will remain strong.
