Does OSU deserve being in the CFB Playoffs?

Submitted by UM85 on November 27th, 2022 at 8:26 AM

B1G Commissioner Kevin Warren called for tOSU to be included in the playoffs.

"Clearly, Michigan and Ohio State are two of the best four teams in the country, and I think today proved it. Great football game. Epic football game. Without a doubt, I think they are clearly two of the best football teams in the country."

And:

"These are two powerhouse teams and clearly two of the top four teams in all of college football. You look at all the games you watch. Put even the rankings to the side. If you ask yourself, who are the teams that are better than these two football teams in the country? These are two of the four best teams in the country. By far."

Obviously, KW is just doing his job but he is only half right (the part about Michigan.)  After the spanking UM just put on ohio (hahahahahaha!!!) and the fact that ND lost to USC (hahahahahaha!!!) - which was one of ohio's marquee wins, tough to argue that the Big Ten East's runners-up deserve anything other than a trip to Disneyland to play the PAC12 runners-up.

Would you rather have ohio in or out?

I want USC and TCU to win out. Leave OSU out of this. They lost their must-win game.

But if TCU or USC lose the title game, Ohio State probably gets in. I'm not sure who else would even have a chance to jump them.

Putting the Buckeyes back in contention would be an insult to Michigan at this point. There is no way if the opposite result occurred that pundits would even suggest Michigan might have a shot after losing by three TD's at home.

This. Even I am on record as saying that if UM is blown out they don't deserve a playoff bid.

It's another story if either team lost in a close, tight classic. This game was close for a half. For a half of football, having taken their best shot, UM was down 3. UM immediately answers to start the 2nd half and never gives up the lead from there. They won by 22.

If UM lost by 22 there is nobody in that committee room adding Michigan. None. Not one. They'd add a two-loss over UM at that pointz we all know it and (probably) rightfully so.

OSU was spanked by 22 in their own house, denied a chance to do the one thing that would have cemented a playoff spot certainly (win their own conference title), and Kevin Warren is asking if they should get a sympathy fuck? No, I don't think so. They can rot for another year.

There was plenty of speculation here and elsewhere that if we lost to OSU we should still be in the playoff conversation. The same is true for them.

We beat an elite team; that's one of the things that makes the win so great. I think it's fair that they should be considered, depending on what happens with other teams.

I don't think a two loss Alabama team should be chosen over OSU.

I think they are very talented and probably a top 5 team. However, their body of work lately hasn't made a strong case for them to be in the playoff hunt. If it were the 12 team setup, no doubt.

Northwestern got crushed yesterday by Illinois, but kept it close to OSU.

Maryland, ever the tempest in the teapot, had a chance to win that game on their final possession vs OSU.

Michigan, as you may have watched, read about, and heard, beat OSU at the Shoe, 45-23 and the second half wasn't competitive. Each team is going to have their moments...OSU had theirs with the world watching and it wasn't pretty.

But, as C.J. Stroud said, they won't let that one game define them, even though the rest of the sports world already did.

So the reward for winning a place in your conference championship is an extra game that exposes you to losing your place to a lesser team that sat at home?

I think Georgia, Michigan and TCU should be in regardless of their championship results. I actually think USC should as well but damn this whole process for making me cheer for USC twice.

Michigan and Georgia have already punched our tickets to the CFP, I think even if we somehow get blown out by Purdue. TCU gets a spot if they win out. And if USC wins out, they should absolutely get the fourth spot.

Ohio State didn't look like an elite team yesterday. They had a few amazing completions from an NFL QB and a couple NFL WRs. But the coaching was conservative and... I don't know, weird. They made no adjustments to obvious schematic flaws.

I know they were dealing with injuries too, but I think Michigan is at the point where our second man up is a legit player who can fill in at most spots on the field. I'm not sure Ohio State really has that luxury at the moment.

It was such an odd coaching job. Every time they didn't go for it on fourth down, it was a gift. How can you have such talent at QB and WR and not even try on 4th and a few?

Then the Cover-0 stuff when they don't have a secondary that can play mistake-free and never takes bad angles. Even the Edwards runs shouldn't have gone to the house.

It was a wonderful, convincing, second-half dominant performance. But the coaching on the other side was head-scratching at best.

We definitely don’t want them in, but Ohio may backdoor itself into the CFP. If either TCU or USC loses in their conference title game, then it will come down to 1 loss Ohio and 2 loss Bama.

I've been working through this. There are inherent contradictions in any system. We accept them in pro sports where everyone has a bad week or two. College football is the exception.

I think Georgia, Michigan and TCU are in regardless of what happens next week, unless it's a blowout loss that exposes something so incredibly ugly that you can't look away.

USC is in if it beats Utah. Their only loss is a one-point road loss to Utah. They've looked good enough in wins over Notre Dame and Oregon State, and their quarterback seems to be getting even better.

If USC loses, it gets tough. Do you take Alabama, which doesn't have the signature win, but plenty of high-quality wins (at Texas, at Mississippi, Mississippi State at home) and both losses were close and on the road? Or Ohio State, which certainly looked the part until yesterday, but that was a big yesterday? Or Tennessee, which has the win over Alabama at home, and a win at LSU, but a couple of road losses that were quite convincing and would be seeded against one of those two teams (Georgia)?

I can drop Tennessee from my list rather easily. Citing the contradiction of the Alabama win, but excusing it because it was close and at Tennessee. I don't see the case for Clemson to get back into it. USC just doesn't have the overall resume if it loses to Utah twice. And I have a tough time deciding between Alabama and Ohio State, but I probably give it to Alabama because Ohio State's loss was convincing and at home.

And I'm really glad the Big Ten didn't follow the Pac Twelve and go divisionless. Imagine if The Game were just an exhibition - show nothing because you play for real in a sterile dome in Indianapolis next week.

Hypothetically speaking, if Michigan gets blown out by Purdue, is their enough justification to move a 2 loss Bama team over them or a 1 loss OSU team who got absolutely murdered at home by Michigan?

The committee would have some serious explaining to do if that were the case.

Michigan is in regardless of what happens next week. Same can be said for Georigia and TCU.

Idk, I’m not sure I really envy the committee with the 4th and final selection, because of who is waiting on the doorstep, and I’m sure they will feel that heat…

Georgia is undefeated, defending national champ, and hails out of the SEC. They’re in no matter what. They’re just playing for the top seed.

Michigan is undefeated, defending B1G champ, playoff rep. Just hamblasted the “Greatest Show on College Turf” by 3 TD’s at their house. I think we’re in, but what scares me is that we play an unranked Purdue, and losing to them would be…not great.

TCU, undefeated in the what I believe to be an overvalued Big 12,  but still undefeated. Pretty tough matchup with KSU, but as long as they avoid a beatdown, I think they’ve made it too.

As for position 4? Obviously USC is in with a win in the Pac-12 title game. That brand is too big to ignore, huge market, and the fact that the NCAA seems desperate to have Pac-12 representation there. Not to mention their lone loss is @Utah by 1, with some controversy mixed in. They have the now Heisman frontrunner. I don’t think they’re spectacular, but a win in their rematch with Utah will be enough.

Who is left to sneak in the back entrance? Probably only Alabama and OSU now. SEC will get a rep, B1G will get a rep, and I’m sure one of the others (Pac or B12) will get one no matter what.

OSU has only 1 loss, but it was an ass-kicking at home. Alabama has 2 losses, both on the road, both at the last second. If anyone is getting in the backdoor with 2 losses, it’s an SEC team, and especially if that teams name is Alabama.

We all know this: if Michigan was where OSU and Alabama are right now, no way in hell would we even be considered. So my long-winded answer: fuck the both of them, do better next year.

OSU doesn't deserve a playoff spot...unless USC and TCU lose.  A 1-loss B1G team definitely should be in the mix over 2-loss teams from other conferences, and over 1-loss TCU.

I would rather have them in.  In a perfect world we'd have two B1G teams handling SEC teams in the semis and an all-B1G championship game for the next decade or so.  And don't say it can't happen.  Two years ago who would have thought we'd be here?

OSU could probably beat USC and TCU on a neutral field but would probably lose to Alabama, so I do think they have a colorable argument that they should be the first in if any of those first 2 teams lose another game.  I'd prefer OSU not get in because I want that team to wallow in missing the playoffs for 2 straight years because of UM, but objectively this season has shown there's not been a truly dominant team.

Ohio State can fuck off, as can Warren.

Where was all this support for Michigan getting into the CFP after getting the shaft against OSU all those years? In particular, 2006 and 2016.

Fuck those guys. They essentially knew that "The Game" was a playoff game, and they lost - in embarrassing fashion.

They lost by 22 at home as a 9 point favorite. No way they should even be considered for the playoff. Michigan, Georgia and TCU should be locks. USC should get the last spot.

TheJimandI

November 27th, 2022 at 11:46 AM ^

No. Who have they beaten? NOBODY. I don't buy Notre Dame and I think they improved drastically over the season. USC handled the domers pretty well.

So, what is their signature win? Penn State? That game was close in the 4th. Probably more of a meltdown by Penn State than a convincing road win for OSU.

If they make it in, I am not at all worried about playing them. At all. I'd probably prefer them to USC honestly. But the question is if they deserve to be in. NO. They got ROUTED - AT HOME. Along the same lines, I didn't think Georgia deserved to be in the playoff last year, but I understand why if you actually watched them play. They looked COMPLETE. OSU got exposed. Badly. I think they'd step on the rake in the CFP. I'd LOVE to watch Georgia demolish them.

If Georgia, UM, and TCU win out, they are in (and maybe if they don't win out). I think these three are absolutely appropriate if undefeated.

So, it boils down to the fourth spot which will likely go to USC if they win out. Is OSU more deserving than USC? I don't think so.

HELL NO!

Among the many great things about this season:

- Alabama - OUT

- OSU - OUT

- Clemson - OUT

- LSU - OUT

- ND - OUT

- 2nd SEC team - OUT

- New teams TCU/USC - IN

----- Of course, Michigan IN

You know TCU or USC will lose and o$u will back door their way in. I’m already planning on it. Shit always works out for those guys sadly. Can you imagine we lose to them in the playoff after dog walking them in Columbus…ugh
