Ty Wheatley, Sr. to be named HC at Morgan State
February 5th, 2019 at 11:29 AM ^
Maybe Tyrone Wheatley, Jr. will transfer there for his final year.
February 5th, 2019 at 11:46 AM ^
Does he actually still have eligibility? How did he do at Stony Brook this past season?
February 5th, 2019 at 11:49 AM ^
Started 8 of 11 games but only had six receptions for 36 yards, as per his stat line. No idea how he was used or played outside of those numbers though.
It also looks like he has one year of eligibility left.
February 5th, 2019 at 12:21 PM ^
He'd have to grad transfer or he'd sit out a year? Or is Morgan State a division lower than Stony Brook?
Looked it up and both are Div I.
February 5th, 2019 at 1:51 PM ^
He should be able to Grad Transfer at this point, no? One RS year & two years of playing at Michigan and one at Stony Brook.
February 5th, 2019 at 4:30 PM ^
It also appears that on the Transfer Portal Site that Tyrone Wheatley Jr shows to be transferring from Michigan. Does Stony Brook not count as the old school in that system? Just curious...
February 5th, 2019 at 9:15 PM ^
Both Stony Brook and Morgan State are FCS teams, so I don't think that Wheatley had to sit a year when he transferred to Stony Brook. Not sure how transfers work between FCS teams, but I'd have to guess that he probably graduated and can transfer anywhere he wants.
February 5th, 2019 at 12:52 PM ^
It really goes to show that recruiting rankings are such a "art" at times and not a science. How a kid ranked as high as he was can't utterly dominate at a Stony Brook is amazing.
February 5th, 2019 at 1:15 PM ^
It also goes to show that there's plenty of good athletes even at places like Stony Brook. Nothing is a given.
February 5th, 2019 at 1:24 PM ^
well, if the QB can't hit wheatley with a decent throw and OL can't give the QB enough time to throw, not much wheatley can do. if WRs and RBs can't produce maybe the opponent just doubles wheatley all the time.
who knows.
February 5th, 2019 at 11:32 AM ^
Awesome. That’s what he’s been looking for. I hope he does great.
February 5th, 2019 at 11:33 AM ^
Congrats Ty! Hoping for great success.
February 5th, 2019 at 11:36 AM ^
Good luck Ty!
February 5th, 2019 at 11:39 AM ^
Wow! Good for him!
February 5th, 2019 at 11:40 AM ^
Congrats! Best of luck to him!
February 5th, 2019 at 11:47 AM ^
Congrats and I hope you do as well there as you did for us wearing the Maize & Blue!
February 5th, 2019 at 11:53 AM ^
Good luck number 6.
February 5th, 2019 at 11:57 AM ^
I actually wondered if he would ever show up on the head coach radar somewhere, and apparently he did. Best of luck to him.
February 5th, 2019 at 12:06 PM ^
Glad he's getting an opportunity to be a head coach, but it seems a bit surprising at a school like this. I feel like this would be a decrease in salary, no?
February 5th, 2019 at 12:17 PM ^
Wheatley was fired at the end of Jacksonville's 2018 season so it is an increase from zero that he was earning before he was hired at Morgan State.
February 5th, 2019 at 12:42 PM ^
True, be he left UM 2 years ago making $365k as a position coach. I'd have to assume he has the track record as a position coach and recruiter to land a similar position with another P5 program.
February 5th, 2019 at 1:04 PM ^
He probably could land a similar position, but if he has head coaching aspirations and wants to climb the ladder this is a good place to start. It's likely not about matching his past salary--he could always land a running backs gig if head coaching does not work out for him.
Wish him the best. Some people here still lament that he left the Michigan staff, but it seems pretty clear that he's looking for more responsibility than Harbaugh could offer here. At least for now.
February 5th, 2019 at 1:28 PM ^
Yes, this seems like the best way to try and climb higher up the coaching ladder. It was either this or take an OC job at a MAC level school. That wouldn't pay as well.

With all the changes we've gone through regarding the offensive playcalling I'm a little surprised he didn't stick around and JH didn't eventually give him more play calling responsibilities.
Personally, and this is just my own gut instinct, but IMO Wheatley was just not enough of a yes man and liked his own ways, which I'b bet some of which were in contrast to JH's ideas. I have no evidence of this whatsoever, but it's the impression I get...they were both too stubborn for each other.
February 5th, 2019 at 9:48 PM ^
Yuck. I'm not sure what you've seen during Wheatley's career that makes you think he would be a good idea to hire as offensive coordinator or a play caller of any sort.
February 5th, 2019 at 12:20 PM ^
Morgan State and Bowling Green open the 2019 season against each other so either Tyrone Wheatley or Scott Loeffler will win in their head coaching debut.
February 5th, 2019 at 12:22 PM ^
Always like watching guys with strong Michigan ties move up the ladder. Having more options with Michigan love down the road is never a bad thing. Ty Wheatley, Mike Hart, and a few other Alumni have had very successful careers.
February 5th, 2019 at 12:27 PM ^
Great news for Ty. Good luck to him

There's a post on San Diego State's football fan Facebook page that Brady Hoke will be hired as the DL coach. Not sure if it's true or not, but the post was deleted from reddit.
Edit: For what it's worth, the post was made by the father of player.
February 5th, 2019 at 12:58 PM ^
Will he walk to San Diego for the job?
February 5th, 2019 at 1:04 PM ^
Well he walked from San Diego State to take the Michigan job so he definitely knows the route.
Talk about the coaching "walk of shame". Leave SDS as HC to take Michigan job in 2010. Return to SDS as D Line coach in 2019.
February 5th, 2019 at 1:16 PM ^
Plenty of money to ease the pain of the shame
February 5th, 2019 at 2:16 PM ^
Why do people make comments like this? Are you jealous?
Brady Hoke does not seem like a guy who is motivated primarily by money. Failing at what you have aspired to do your whole life is hard regardless of how rich or poor you are.
February 5th, 2019 at 5:16 PM ^
Failing at your life goal is tough no matter who you are, but I bet it's a whole lot easier to deal with when you're rich.
And I'm definitely jealous of Brady Hoke.
February 5th, 2019 at 1:07 PM ^
I hope the current coaching staff does well and is there for several years, "ferGodsakes" ..... Brady's career can't survive another short tenure ending with being fired.
February 5th, 2019 at 1:21 PM ^
I'm sure his bank account is doing just fine from all the firings.
February 5th, 2019 at 1:01 PM ^
What a career arc. From SDSU's head coach to a P5 head coach to SDSU's DL coach.
February 5th, 2019 at 1:33 PM ^
Hoke hired Rocky Long to be his DC for the 2009-2010 years at San Diego State (after New Mexico stupidly pressured Long to resign as Head Coach --- the Lobos have been terrible ever since).
And that hire set the stage for Long to become SDSU Head Coach when Hoke left for Ann Arbor. Long's now 69 years old, so he may be looking to retire soon. I suppose this could be history repeating itself: setting the stage by having a viable option as HC already on the coaching staff. Hoke's still young enough at 60. If he became HC in say, 2 years, he'd be about the same age Long was when he took the job.
From what I've read, Hoke is fairly well liked down there.
Hoke & Long also coached together at Oregon State way back in the day.
Overall, seems like a good hire by SDSU to me.

We need to give Jay Harbaugh a raise. Ty will be coming to poach. He needs the expertise on his staff.
February 5th, 2019 at 3:59 PM ^
One of my all time favorite players on and off the field!!
So happy for him and wish him all the best luck he can have.
I will now root for Morgan State!
February 5th, 2019 at 5:20 PM ^
Wow my nephew plays there. I will see Wheatley in action when I watch them play at Bowling Green next season.
February 6th, 2019 at 11:44 AM ^
It will be interesting to see how he fills out his staff.
February 6th, 2019 at 1:25 PM ^
Any chance one of our assistants would join him as a coordinator?
February 6th, 2019 at 4:47 PM ^
Is Pep a opinion?
