(Blue) Devils go down
January 14th, 2019 at 9:21 PM ^
Go blue, the real blue!
January 14th, 2019 at 9:21 PM ^
Tre Jones was hurt in the first half, Cam Reddish was out with an illness, Duke's starters were 5-33 from 3 as a group (including 0-10 from Jack White), and Syracuse made a ton of tough shots, including a 70-footer to end the first half.
Big win for Cuse, and an opportunity for Michigan to claim the #1 spot with a win Saturday.
RJ Barrett ended up 8-30 (!) from the field. Ouch.
January 14th, 2019 at 9:26 PM ^
Coach K should have tried a different batch of McDonalds All-Americans when it became obvious the first wave wasn’t getting it done tonight.
January 14th, 2019 at 9:26 PM ^
Regardless of being short players - they have a lot of weaknesses. Three point shooting and rebounding are mediocre.
Had 12-0 lead to start game, and gave it up at home. Unreal.
We have to go into Madison and take one - and we will be #1! Not an easy task - but I believe that Beilein and our boys will do it!
Go Blue!
January 14th, 2019 at 9:32 PM ^
Agreed. They don't block out well and sure don't defend very well. They're good but damn sure beatable.
January 14th, 2019 at 9:54 PM ^
Big difference between Coach K in the post game press conference vs Izzo and his propensity to rip his players - even after a victory - in his presser. Jus sayin
January 14th, 2019 at 9:33 PM ^
Yeah, this is still a bad loss for Duke at home to a team that came into the game squarely on the bubble (a frequent location for Syracuse, it seems). I was just trying to add context as to how it even happened. It's tough to beat anyone when you miss 34 3-pointers in a single game.
January 14th, 2019 at 9:38 PM ^
They may still be a "bubble" team, but this win probably gets the 'cuse into the tourney - that's a really big road win for them.
January 14th, 2019 at 10:58 PM ^
That’s what the Cuse zone can do to you if you aren’t a solid 3-point-shooting team, which Duke isn’t (262nd). It’s an upset but hardly a fluke.
January 14th, 2019 at 9:34 PM ^
No we will not be #1. Rankings were just released and not again until next week, after the Wisconsin game. If we lose we will have never been #1.
January 14th, 2019 at 9:41 PM ^
Thats why he said we had to go to Madison and win to be number 1.
And honestly - even then it may not matter. If Virginia beat Tech and Duke this week, they may pass us, and probably should. I'm cool without the pressure of of that #1 ranking anyhow.
January 14th, 2019 at 9:54 PM ^
Fair. I read it differently, and it is ambiguous. I read it as “we have to win in Madison! And (to add to the pressure) we’ll be #1!”
you read it as “we have to win in Madison! And we’ll be #1 (if we do)!”
I suspect yours is the intention of the message.
January 14th, 2019 at 10:16 PM ^
...and FTs
January 14th, 2019 at 10:29 PM ^
WOW! I turned it off after it was 12-2 (both free throws) thinking it was over.
January 14th, 2019 at 11:16 PM ^
I did EXACTLY the same thing.
January 14th, 2019 at 11:36 PM ^
Could be a Double Duke Dunk as they will have to play UVA without Tre Jones on Saturday......
But, then comes March......
January 15th, 2019 at 7:24 AM ^
When the AP Poll comes out next week, Duke will still be No. 1, but by a couple of points less. /s
January 15th, 2019 at 7:25 AM ^
Double post. My bad.
January 15th, 2019 at 8:47 AM ^
Duke will still be #1 because Duke's losses are better than ours.
January 14th, 2019 at 9:22 PM ^
There’s a new Sheriff in town and it’s name is Michigan. GoBlue!!
January 15th, 2019 at 2:51 AM ^

January 15th, 2019 at 10:09 AM ^
"I'm your worst fucking nightmare. I'm a John Beilein team that plays suffocating defense with balanced scoring and makes few mistakes."
[ok, Eddie only said part of that. Just work with me.]
January 14th, 2019 at 9:22 PM ^
OP, please post to thread so that I can upvote you for beating me by a millisecond :-)

OT: DOWN GOES DUKE!
Just wanted to make sure everyone knows.
January 14th, 2019 at 9:22 PM ^
just win baby just win Go Blue
January 14th, 2019 at 9:22 PM ^
It wouldn't surprise me if Cuse made a run in March. Battle and Hughes are dudes
January 14th, 2019 at 9:35 PM ^
Cuss is notorious for this, at least in the last few years. Having a meh regular season, barely making it into the tournament, and then scoring some huge upsets in the tournament on a run that goes longer than it ought to.
Boeheim is a great coach.
January 14th, 2019 at 10:00 PM ^
If he's such a great coach how come they're always mediocre in the regular season?
January 14th, 2019 at 10:11 PM ^
I think he runs a bit of a "gimmick" system despite his obvious talent as a coach. In the regular season in a tough conference I think that teams can plan for that zone and they end up losing a few tight games, especially since their offense is usually clunky.
In the tournament with short turnarounds and limited prep time on a weekend they can be a terror with that zone if you aren't prepared. Look what it did to Duke's youth tonight - settled for a ton of 3s that had no chance of going in and looked lost for most of the shot-clock.
Good coach, but in a Rich-Rod way.
January 14th, 2019 at 10:24 PM ^
nailed it. that's why i don't want to face them with one day rest. give JB 4 days, and he can gameplan any team; similar to 2013 when mcgary ate up that zone in the final 4.
January 15th, 2019 at 2:23 AM ^
Michigan scored like 50 some points in that game. McGary didn't exactly eat it up, nor did anyone else. It was a slog that Michigan won on defense.
January 15th, 2019 at 12:13 PM ^
61-56 and mcgary led the team in assists with 6 by being the point man in the high post; something he hadn't done all year.
January 14th, 2019 at 10:26 PM ^
I remember in the 5-7 years following their NC in 2003 it was the opposite where Cuse would be very good in the regular season but then bow out early in the big tourney . Seems to be the opposite the last 5 years or so
January 15th, 2019 at 12:23 AM ^
No need to Cuss. I "swear" it's 'Cuse.
January 14th, 2019 at 9:23 PM ^
How come only 5 Down goes Duke threads?
Make it 6 and counting. Love it.
January 14th, 2019 at 9:24 PM ^
You mean 6.
January 14th, 2019 at 9:26 PM ^
This thread is already off the front page.
January 14th, 2019 at 9:23 PM ^
Puke owned by a crappy offensive Syracuse
January 14th, 2019 at 9:23 PM ^
Fuck the Dukies!!
January 14th, 2019 at 9:25 PM ^
who laid, what, 95 points on them
January 14th, 2019 at 9:23 PM ^
There is no team I enjoy watching lose as much as I like watching Duke lose.
And Tyus still chose poorly.
Go Blue!
January 14th, 2019 at 9:52 PM ^
Tyus chose poorly but has helped us out now twice! He's still an M fan!
