Reports: Ohio State defensive co-coordinator Alex Grinch is leaving for Oklahoma.

I am sure this can somehow be construed to be a misstep by Harbaugh.

Maybe Schiano will land the Temple job and take Wilson with him.
January 4th, 2019 at 2:34 PM ^
Is that speculation based on what you think makes sense, or based on inside info?
January 4th, 2019 at 3:30 PM ^
Sounds familiar. I don’t understand this to be honest. Why sit around and wait, hoping someone will find a new job vs. knowing a change is going to happen regardless? Optics aren’t that important in sports coaching.

Firing an assistant makes the boss look incompetent for hiring someone he had to fire. It also looks bad as a coach to be fired. It's mutually advantageous to separate like this.
January 4th, 2019 at 9:38 PM ^
Fascinating
January 4th, 2019 at 2:23 PM ^
Harbaugh has been super impressive with his defensive coach selections. If Washington does indeed get an from OSU and takes it, I'm sure we will replace with someone just as good.
Hopefully the replacement has OH roots.

Being DC at a program where if you hold your opponent to under 45, you'll probably win, sounds pretty good.
January 4th, 2019 at 2:36 PM ^
No one knows for sure, but the general feeling is that Day could have kept him and chose not to. Specifically, Grinch turned out to be a complete non-factor in recruiting, and the DBs he coached this year were historically bad. Even if he could have been a great DC if given full control, those are two pretty big strikes.
January 4th, 2019 at 3:17 PM ^
You're correct. If Day wanted Grinch to be our 'main' DC, Grinch would have accepted that easily. He's an Ohio guy. Our safeties regressed this year and Washington States defense did better after he left. Grinch is gone and now Billy Davis needs to be shown the door. And I think Al Washington, if he comes to OSU, would take the spot of Davis.
January 4th, 2019 at 3:25 PM ^
From what Ive heard, Grinch came on board to be the next D coordinator. When Schiano didn't get a new Head coaching gig, there is now a log jam. Also from all the discussions on Elevenwariors, the belief is that their defensive philosophies didn't mesh. I personally would have liked to see how Grinch would have performed on his own, but he was a Meyer hire and a Meyer guy. Day is obviously goin to bring in his own guys so no excuses.
January 4th, 2019 at 3:28 PM ^
I think Day was in the middle of an assistant (Grinch) trying to lock down the sole D Coordinator position which would mean losing Schiano. Day didn't like his had being forced - especially on a short time frame. Also, given that Ohio State had the worst safety play in years - and Grinch was safety coach - didn't help his cause. And after horrible safety play, one of Grinch's starters was knocked out during the 8th or 9th game of the year and the kid that replaced him was a big upgrade. People had been calling for a change all year - just to try someone new. I think Meyer was a lot higher on Grinch than Day.
January 4th, 2019 at 2:28 PM ^
I (and prob many others) assumed Grinch was brought in to replace Schiano, and when the Tennessee offer blew up, Grinch was somewhat marginalized. Whether that's true or not, 2018's defense sucked, so not a huge loss.
January 4th, 2019 at 2:29 PM ^
This is all fun and games until the news comes out that al Washington is going to osu now that they have open spots
January 4th, 2019 at 2:32 PM ^
If he’s going there as DC vs a lateral move I think it stings a bit less.
January 4th, 2019 at 2:39 PM ^
Day is almost certainly going to fire Bill Davis, current OSU LB coach / former Urban Meyer best man, so that alone will open things up for Washington.
January 4th, 2019 at 2:51 PM ^
Will OSU give Bill Davis a cushy no-show job in the AD, just like esteemed ethics professor Urban Meyer?
January 4th, 2019 at 2:55 PM ^
I'm sure he's worthy of such a position. It is OSU after all...
January 4th, 2019 at 3:33 PM ^
I'm guessing NOT. I don't think Davis has any kids that are being recruited - so no need to provide a job.
January 4th, 2019 at 3:04 PM ^
I still don't see how Washington doesn't have a contract restriction..especially when it comes to recruiting implications if he goes to their rival... Otherwise any rival can poach the other coaches and recruits with more ease.
January 4th, 2019 at 3:20 PM ^
It’s apart of the business, plus would you want a coach on your staff who may have his heart in another place. That may work against you as well. So it is best to let them move on to where they want to be.
January 4th, 2019 at 2:45 PM ^
Not a great hire by Oklahoma.
January 4th, 2019 at 3:03 PM ^
Can it get any worst?
January 4th, 2019 at 3:05 PM ^
LOL. He will fit right in there.
January 4th, 2019 at 3:11 PM ^
The kingdom is crumbling. Osu had a nice little run - tainted by more deceit.
January 4th, 2019 at 3:28 PM ^
Deceit?? How so ?
January 4th, 2019 at 3:48 PM ^
Your question says all we need to know. Deleted text messages, bullying reporters with outright lies, etc. hey, he beat the team up north, so he is a hero and his character flaws should not be shamed but rewarded with a character class! You bucknuts are a pathetic bunch.
January 4th, 2019 at 3:12 PM ^
How could Harbaugh let this happen? Idiot!
am I doing it right?
January 4th, 2019 at 3:16 PM ^
No. Needs more politics.
January 4th, 2019 at 5:54 PM ^
How did Trump let Harbaugh let this happen? Damn Obama’s fault.
How’s that?
January 4th, 2019 at 6:20 PM ^
I'm listening....
January 4th, 2019 at 3:37 PM ^
Give you all something to chew on. It is highly unlikely OSU has the best available option at Head Coach. How was Florida when Meyer left? .
Day will have a fine 2019 season because OSU is loaded. I would win 10 games with that talent. Yes, a nobody armchair QB can win 10 games in Columbus next year. I am saying it here. Day will be the first coach to lose to Michigan in forever and that one loss will plant a HUGE M Flag of doubt in the brains of all the goobers in Ohio. Trust me, Day was not OSU's best option for HC. They could have got a much more proven and accomplished coach and likely even had a better options on staff.
The irony for Washington (which I hope he stays), if he leaves, he will be part of the beginning of the end of OSU dominance. Meyer was/is a generational, meter moving coach. Like him or not (and I don't) the guy is an all time great coach. He should be in the same breath as Bear, Saban, Bo and Woody. Inarguably, more successful than than all of those guys except Saban.
I know, I know, words are just that. Got to prove it on field. Well, as I have stated in previous threads. I am going to Vegas in April and I am making every Michigan prop bet I can find. B1G Champion, CFP appearance, 10 games won, 11 games won, etc. Of course I am betting on Michigan winning it all. Do I really think they will? No. But I damn sure think a lot of the hand wringing you read on these threads and posts are going to look awfully foolish.
January 4th, 2019 at 3:43 PM ^
Start a thread and post your betting slips. Urban still works for OSU. He's not going to leave them in a shit hole (like Florida) and then hang around to face the backlash. There's nothing in that guy's character to suggest he wouldn't slink off somewhere else. Urban picked Day. He's going to get a ton of shit if Day sucks.
January 4th, 2019 at 6:03 PM ^
The only reason Urban stayed was so the recruits/players dont start transfering. If he would have packed and left he would have gotten a lot of backlash from recruits/high school coaches and more importantly he would have looked guilty. Osu has strategised his exit perfectly. Leave as a HC due to illness, get a temp position at osu then next year he leaves osu. In two years he is a HC somewhere else. You think Urban wants to be an assistance AD? He is the most successful coach in this era next to Saban.
January 4th, 2019 at 6:04 PM ^
Day won't "suck". Never said he would. Saying he will be "fine". But he won't be a Meyer. More like a Cooper.... Not a Mini Cooper, but a John Cooper. As a Michigan fan, having Day stay was one of the best things we could have hoped for. After losing to Michigan for 2 or 3 straight years it will be fun to watch the OSU boards.
January 4th, 2019 at 7:43 PM ^
That was Day’s offense that kicked the shit out of Michigan this year. I have an inkling that he’s probably going to do a bit better than fine.
The only risk I see for them is if he stumbles early and it knocks down their recruiting. However, if he beats Michigan and then makes the CFP next year, that train is just going to keep rolling.
January 4th, 2019 at 9:38 PM ^
Will his presence at USC for the 2020 season affect any recruits? Just asking a random question ..,
January 5th, 2019 at 7:29 AM ^
You are absolutely crazy if you believe Meyer cares about anyone more than himself. I believe he cares only about himself so much that he was willing and even wanted to walk when the university didn’t 100% stand behind him through the Smith debacle at the beginning of th season. It has been all hail Meyer throughout his entire careers and that’s not going away so he can now all of a sudden give Day all the glory. He didn’t stay on OSU’s payroll for Day. He stayed on to help retain recruiting and to give himself some time to figure out what is next. There is not a chance Meyer even thinks he would be responsible when Day is not successful. As a matter of fact, there is a better chance the thought has entered Meyer’s head that if Day isn’t that good, Meyer will be looked at as even better for what he was able to accomplish at OSU.
January 4th, 2019 at 3:43 PM ^
Harbaugh moves as slow as his offense.
January 4th, 2019 at 4:54 PM ^
How does this have anything to do with Harbaugh?
January 4th, 2019 at 3:57 PM ^
I'm hoping Harbaugh has gotten the ball rolling on coaching changes and they just haven't been made public yet. I think Major Applewhite would be a good choice for OC
January 4th, 2019 at 5:48 PM ^
When the L.A Ram's season ends, I think there is better than a 50/50 chance you see Fisch in Ann Arbor.
January 4th, 2019 at 5:47 PM ^
Grinch moving to Ohio State was an awkward fit when Schiano stayed. Came to Ohio State thinking he was going to get a or more responsibility then he did. Day wants Schiano to stay. Schiano though is taking a look at other opportunities.
January 4th, 2019 at 6:32 PM ^
Done deal.
January 4th, 2019 at 6:36 PM ^
If you haven't heard the cover by small town titans you should give it a listen
January 4th, 2019 at 7:37 PM ^
Maybe we can get Oklahoma's OC.
January 4th, 2019 at 7:45 PM ^
I mean, if anyone needs a new defensive cordinator...
January 4th, 2019 at 7:58 PM ^
Making room for Washington.....yep....
January 4th, 2019 at 9:16 PM ^
I do not think this is a big deal in Columbus. Safeties played terrible and he didn't get to put his stamp on the program.
