Yeah, as a coordinator you can focus on your Xs and Os and do some recruiting. The HC is a much more political job that requires a different skill set. The heat gets hot quickly when anything does not go as planned. This is certainly true at a place like Michigan, but at Ohio State it has to be ten times worse. I recently heard where Jim Tressel once commented that ten years as a head coach at one place is a looooonnnnngggg time.

"If Day wasnt already at OSU would he have been hired this quickly" and the answer was a resounding NO.

It's a good point.  If they did a Harbaugh-finds-Don-Brown type exercise, would they have come up with Ryan Day?  Probably not.

It won't matter if it works out, but if there are problems down the road, there will be all kinds of recriminations about an unnecessarily half-assed process done without due diligence.

You're freaking Ohio State, you have options.  There's a line out the door.  You don't have to marry the first guy that asks.

The previous decommit was rumored to be looking elsewhere before he jumped ship so that one might stick. This kid I think ends back up at OSU, his brother just finished his freshman year there. He's making a good decision to look around/get re-recruited with a new HC, but he probably ends up there once he gets to know Day/his staff better.

It'd be nice if they lost some 2019 guys, but they only have 15 commits and a lot of them may be signing in a few weeks. It's probably not ideal to sign at OSU with a new HC, but better than opening up your recruitment to sign at a completely new school with a HC who's still not Urban.

They've likely spent the past few weeks prepping the '19 kids for this so i'd imagine they'll take a little longer to decide if they're going to look around again. Also it's close to the early signing period and may feel a little late in the game to them to go looking around again if they've been blowing off other school's advances since they committed. They have six guys left in the 2020 class as it stands today - wouldn't be suprised if a couple more reopened their recruitments.

That said they have some work to do in the '19 class if they're going to get to the roughly 25 or spots they were forecasted to be taking before the season. They have 15 commits per 247 and lead or are seemingly still significantly in the running for

  • Harrison
  • Darnell Hunt (OT)
  • Tommy Eichenberg (ILB)
  • Jonathan Allen (OT)

and that's about it right now for top recruits. I'm sure they'll find some guys before the end of the cycle but that's not looking great for them to finish out the 2019 class.

That is a lot of wood to chop for 2019.  No wonder they waited to announce his retirement to just before the early December signing date.  Hard for those early commits to shop around this late.  But there could be a few more, probably from the out-of-staters.  Seeing a guy who has a brother on the team de-commit is not a good signal to the rest of the class.

Next "shoe" to drop after the bowl game is early draft guys and transfers.  Could be a big hit to the offense.

Add in position coach uncertainty to the recruiting trail and Columbus is suddenly in a bit of turmoil.

For those interested, here's a link to a news story from MSN on this.  Need a few more to decommit so that this becomes more of a story.

I was hoping we could've gotten some interest from him regardless of the Meyer status .....but than Harrison Bailey didn't commit here :(

Hey maybe they don't have room for him at Tennessee :)

Fuck yes.

Good start in de-committing from the team run by domestic abusers.

Now come to the team run by grown men who actually have principles.

Ehh I think at this point, a 2020 kid de-committing isn't much to worry about for them. It's more of a "wait and see how things look next year" kind of approach. If they want to come back, I'm sure there will be spots for them.

Now if 2019 kids start de-committing, then you've got something there.

To be fair, 2020 is not even this cycle, so like most of the time when this happens, even to us, it's more a "yeah, whatever" moment to me. If they start losing big on the current cycle, that will be interesting.....also surprising actually.

How do you know he'll coach again?  because he said he wouldn't..... that piece of shit couldn't tell the truth if he was on fire.
