Brady Hoke Fired From Carolina Panthers

Per Tom Pelissero on Twitter:

The #Panthers have fired multiple assistant coaches, including DL coach Brady Hoke and CBs coach Jeff Imamura, per sources.

Having not watched 20 minutes of the NFL this year, are the Panthers that bad?  I'm guessing their defense is pretty awful, if the DL and CB coaches are departing, but jeez - in the middle of the season?

Yes, but the Dline pressure really hasn't been that effective this season for the Panthers. Their issues as a team go way beyond Hoke and the secondary coach's alleged failings. They are breaking in a new offensive system with some great young talent. They appear to be solid and mostly effective, but they have just played too many close games, winning and losing both.

They have just lacked consistency in every area of the game, and that failure more than anything else is responsible for this losing streak. They can't count on the offense when the defense plays well as it essentially did yesterday.

They gave up a TD on a third down prayer by Jameis Winston to the end zone where an iffy 52-yard PI put the ball on the one and then led to a 14-point margin, late in the third quarter. It wound up being the difference in the game after the Panthers kept stalling after Cam Newton drove the team repeatedly into Bucs territory only to give it up with interception after interception. He threw four in the game and the Panthers went to 1-5 on the road this season. These firings apparently were the coach's response to a team wakeup call from the owner,

Harbaugh has shown interest? Or they are interested in him and called him, and he didn't just hang up on them, but talked like a polite human being but doesn't want the job, so it's being called "Harbaugh is talking to the Packers"?

I can't imagine he'd leave before getting a National Championship. But who knows.

Wouldn't you at least listen though if you're Harbaugh? The chance to coach the league's most iconic franchise with its greatest quarterback in his prime? Close enough not to have to move the family? Tired of getting crap from this fanbase for not meeting their crazy expectations? Maybe your last chance to win a Super Bowl?

Fuck it, I'd listen damn hard.

Screw that OC business, however, if Mattison retires I would gladly accept Hoke back into the Michigan family as the DL coach.

His firing from Carolina came at a piss poor time as far as college coaching gigs.  Hoke would've been a solid candidate for CMU.

Remembering that Harbaugh had to take over a team coached by this guy and worse, an administration that would hire Hoke puts this rebuild and our position relative to OSU into perspective.

Sorry to hear that he was fired - (almost) never a good thing for one's professional and personal life.  That said, he has been well paid for it all and I won't commiserate much for him.

Carolina was 6th in the NFL in YPG rushing, 8th in YPA rushing, but in the 20s for sacks. All that matches pretty well with how Hoke coaches, which puts a strong emphasis on how to defend the run but isn't as great at coaching up the pass rush. Football Outsiders says Carolina has the 2nd best DL in the NFL (though I've always found those advanced metrics with position specific should take a little grain of salt).

I haven't watched the Panthers much this year, but find it hard to believe he was the primary problem. Panthers had a solid DL last year, so Hoke didn't make drastic improvements or anything. But this seems more like the HC in Carolina trying to salvage his own job after a bad loss (and a guy that was on the hot seat heading into the year).

The defensive line has good depth with solid veteran performers including Julius Pepper who at 38 is practically a one-man force in getting pressure. Yesterday, the defense managed 4 sacks against Winston, and he was mostly under duress while the running game went nowhere for the Bucs whose leading rusher was Winston.

I mean Cam Newton threw 4 picks and it was the pressure he got in the pocket that led to virtually all. The move to fire Hoke  and the secondary coach seems like an emotional band aid for the head coach-- doing something to shake up the team. Both coaches are brand new to the staff so there isn't any real relationship damage stemming from their departure.

You know that Rivera was a teammate of Harbaugh with the Bears, and he might have vouched for Hoke before his hiring. There was a rumor that Hoke might be in consideration for the vacant UNCC head coaching job which the school's AD had seemed likely to fill with Division 2 coach until that offer was pulled last week. So, Brady truly wanted to stay in Charlotte, he could apparently interview for that position right now.

Brady will end up taking a FCS job, will have a reasonably successful program and will be able to stay as long as he wants to..... which is what he should have done after Michigan.

Serious Question - why would he go to the FCS?  Would Brady not be able to land a MAC-level job?  He had a lot of success (relative) at both Ball State and San Diego before coming to Michigan.  If I were a school like Buffalo, Toledo, etc., and Hoke wanted to take over as HC, I would certainly listen.

I don't think he couldn't land a MAC level job... and maybe he waits around for the right opportunity.  I just think taking over a shitty program that just fired its coach, hoping to build the program and not get fired before you're able to right the ship, after his recent employment history might not be his best move.

Stepping down another level, where he's likely over qualified and will hold a recruiting advantage over his competitors could be a suitable career move.

There is a lot wrong with the Panthers.

New ownership.

Team getting long in the tooth at a lot of positions.

Olson is one - been injured 2 years - now again - probably a career end.

Lots of starters on final year of contract.

Newton a dual-threat QB that no longer runs and has average accuracy.
