I wish this were all true but I'm still scared of the MSU game. Every year they spend part of every week working on Michigan and it causes them to lose games to bad teams and then greatly outperform against us. They've had a great run defense and horrid pass defense many years and I don't think we've once taken advantage of it. Fun listening to a sparty melt down though!

If they manage to beat Michigan, the next Monday he'll act like he just won the lottery. All of a sudden, he would have known this was coming all along. He's done it before. A normal person would be embarrassed by that but we are dealing with either an NPD or BPD personality.

Michigan hasn't had the quarterback to take advantage of it other than rudock in a decade. As much as everyone loves Denard throwing the ball was not his strong suit. Also it was not Rodriguez's strong suit. And Michigan didn't have a strong suit under Hoke. Now that we have a former Michigan quarterback was a pro quarterback and understand that you may need to throw the ball well...

When Valenti's not being a whiny little bitch, then he's being a smarmy fucking asshole.

Somebody should do a poll about who is the most loved/hated Detroit sports broadcasting personality in all of history.  It would end with Ernie Harwell on 1 end & Valenti on the other.

Valenti has a lot of competition for that bottom spot. I actually think Drew Sharp or Rob Parker would probably claim it in a vote. Valenti has some fans (mostly state people), but I’ve never met one person that liked Rob Parker. People softened on Sharp after he passed, but he was almost universally disliked as well.

Valenti's no different than any other sports media talking head these days.  It's the same formula you see employed by Stephen A. Smith, Paul Finebaum, Colin Cowherd, etc.  Take contrarian position to your listenership, dismiss their supportive viewpoints as homerism, sit back and warm your hands by the flamewar.  Rinse and repeat.  Profit.

It's a lazy model, but sadly it's proven to be a very profitable one and it probably won't change until the average sports consumer becomes more sophisticated, which doesn't seem likely.

Sparty has been on the decline for 4 years. They just got lucky. They aren't even a basketball school anymore.

Dantonio and MSU peaked around 3 seasons ago. They've been on a decline since. It's just that the abnormality of their 9-3 season has disguised this.

Most sports talk formats are built on the premise that the average type of person who consumes that content is a mouth-breathing moron who seldom experiences games while sober and never had any ability to form or appreciate nuanced opinions. Valenti is just the local guy running that same playbook adjusted to the local scene. It seems to work, so their premise appears to be correct.

While this is true, it's sad to present a nuanced and detailed opinion to one of the national talking head radio shows.  They can't respond with anything other than superficial talking points that everyone falls back on. Because they don't watch everything, and they don't study game results.  As an example, I was listening to Greg McElroy this morning (a good, balanced, and reasonable opinion who generally likes Harbaugh), and (all in the same segment) he said:

  • Michigan has a chance to win out
  • Michigan's next three are an impossible task
  • PSU is absolutely the best 1-loss team, bar none
  • Michigan should have beaten Maryland badly

There is no nuanced, detailed thought based on how the games (and scheduled) actually played out.

I feel like Valenti goes off on this same rant every time they lose. It’s always “we suck, our playcalling sucks, Dantonio doesnt adapt,” and then his narrative changes when they’ve strung together a few wins or if they beat Michigan, only to return again when they lose.

He likes to pretend he’s a superior fan and can look at things objectively, but he’s no different than every other fan (like many we have here) that bash the team endlessly when they lose and pound their chest after every win.

He, along with other Sparty fans, are throwing in the towel to lower expectations. They all thought with so many starters coming back from a 10 win team they were going to be elite this year. They aren’t. Not even close. But now they seem to be swinging the pendulum too far the other direction. Acting like they will be lucky to win 5 games. They are probably a 7 win team. Which isn’t that far from where they were the last 2 seasons. They were a better team than 3 wins 2 seasons ago and not as good as a 10 win team last year. Call me the resident Sparty concern guy if you want, but I still think they throw everything they have against us on the 20th. That won’t be an easy game. Even 2 years ago they played well above their heads when we faced them. We were sooo much better than them, it should have been much easier, but we only forced one punt all game. Our D needs to step up and take away the passing game and Shea needs to light up the secondary because we aren’t going to run much on them.

Bottom line, we are the better team yet again but that hasn’t always meant we escape with a win. We have been better the last 3 years and have one win to show for it.

They're going to throw everything they have at us. But I think this team is much better equipped to deal with it...they've gotten punched in the mouth at ND and NW and responded well in both games, slowly chipping away and never panicking. Shea Patterson and the improved OL (if it holds up well) are game-changers for Michigan this year.

The only thing I worry about is fatigue and nagging injuries equalizing things...MSU is a week after M v. Wisconsin and Michigan has not had a bye yet this year. That concerns me a bit. Thankfully the schedulers gave MSU a similar tough game the week before Michigan, and not a bye like last year. EDIT: And I'll add MSU has been having some injury issues this year too.

Even before Michigan took it's nosedive to hell under RichRod, it was easy to figure out Valenti's shtick.  There would be days and days and days where he'd desperately bait Michigan fans in to calling in and then would complain about how no Michigan fans would call in.  The very few fans they did let through sounded like they could barely put coherent sentences together.  This was, of course, deliberate so Valenti could go off on one of his rants about how stupid Michigan fans are and how brilliant he was.

The last time I actually listened to him was several years ago when he predicted Sparty basketball to beat us at Crisler.  Michigan won and yet I didn't feel the need to listen to him eat crow the next day because I just didn't care anymore.

Valenti is like the Jerry Springer show.  There was a time you could laugh your ass off at him.  But after a while, the mental instability and anger just gets old.

So, I'm listening to it as I type this. About six minutes let. The dip shit keeps blaming the coaches. I'm sure some of the problems are the coaches. I get that. But how about this, Valenti? The players just are not that good. At some point, recruiting matters. MSU never recruits at the level of OSU, Alabama, UM, etc. They get some blue chips (pun, yes) every now and then, but at some point, recruiting needs to get better.

Thanks for posting this (although the thread might not survive, I hope it does). First time ever hearing the infamous Valenti.  He is a raving lunatic.  Had trouble sleeping last night, gave up and starting reading the thread on my phone... then played the clip. Something about his monotone ranting and yelling put me to sleep within a couple of minutes.  Got 6 hours of unbroken sleep.  All I remember is he wants to fire everyone.

I fully expect MSU to leave it all on the field when they play us, and that includes Warner.

Hopefully we've built enough hate for MSU to bring our best game.

If Sparty fans hadn't proven they are even more insufferable as winners than they are as losers, I would almost feel sorry for them.  They still think their team has plenty of talent and is just playing bad or getting bad breaks.  They still have no idea the only reason they had their brush with quasi-elite status is because Michigan self-destructed for eight years.

This year has been predictable.  They are paying the price for five years of too many recruits with offer sheets from MAC and lower BT schools.  Their depth players would be a decent MAC team, but have no business playing against better Big Ten teams.

And it is only going to get worse for them.  They will be a 7-5 or 6-6 team for the foreseeable future.

Bull shit. Harbaugh beat them in 2015 until MSU needed the most improbable thing in the game to happen to get the win. Harbaugh out coached Dantonio in that year. Last year, we were just bad and had some of the worst quarterbacking ever. MSU wasn't much better than we were, but I'll give them that win. They won fair and square. I don't consider 2015 a win for MSU as far as coaching between Jim and Morkus.

That is BS little bro MSU mentality.

We aren't losing to Northwestern at home, and certainly not 3 years in a row. We're definitely not going 3-9 in a bad year...8-5 is about the worst I think you'll see out of a Harbaugh-coached team, and it took a carousel of injured QBs and young OL and WRs to get there.

We're 1-2 against MSU and one of those losses is one of the most unlucky plays in college football history, and some terrible reffing might I add (wasn't that the Bolden targeting game?). Another one had a monsoon in the middle of the 3rd quarter. Those are not normal games.

So GTFOH with that crap.

Valenti is a “Shock Jock”.  He will say anything to rile listeners.  If Dantonio was fired, he would have a fit.  If MSU beats Michigan he will be back on board and Michigan will again become his doormat.

If Michigan beats MSU next weekend at least Valenti and Baumgardner will have each other and can cry into one others' arms to get through the tough times.
