M's rating looks good to me.

if JH really has found modern (tempo) Jesus, i am very optimistic about the future

i like the younger coaches, if we can hold them and establish a little stability recruiting might really be good.

i've accepted that JH is eccentric and  that he is hard to work for.   i think this is somewhat mitigated by his love of football and willingness to help others advance in the profession.

next year's schedule is very hard.

01/10/2019 - 11:55am Stanford needs OL in the…

Stanford needs OL in the 2020 class.

Stanford took no OT's in 2018 (1 OC) & only 2 in 2019 (so far).

2017 OT 5 stars, Walker Little & Foster Sarell (who might play guard and maybe redshirted this year), will be in their 4th year when Hinton hits The Farm.  Little could go after 2019, if he wanted to.

Stanford took 5 OL in 2016.   Devery Hamilton being one of them and he might be gone after 2019.

Meanwhile, M took 5 in 2017 (4 are still at M) and 6 in 2019.

And it is STANFORD.

01/01/2019 - 8:10am jamcon3, "I still think…

jamcon3, "I still think Harbaugh is the right guy". ---   I did until the end of this year.  I don't now.  And it just isn't the blow outs.  It is watching his reactions and observing others reactions to him.  I think JH is a nice turnaround coach, but his effect fades.  His enthusiasm is diminishing.  And  patience for his idiosyncratic behavior is also fading.  Fact is, he grates on people. You can see it.

He has done some innovative stuff regarding the program--- HS coach mentoring, spring camp blitz, team mom, world trips.  Some of that got shut down by NCAA or de-emphasized by UM.  In the end, I think he is a quirky guy who doesn't engender long term loyalty.  This is not a good thing.

i really think he should go NFL.  he might very well be able to turn around a team like the Jets.  he is a turnaround coach.

12/30/2018 - 9:16am M is what it is; a top 15 to…

M is what it is; a top 15 to 25ish football program without a good recruiting base. a program with a solid, but not innovative or inspiring coach. a program that is top 20ish because it has great resources and some cache, but not enough of the other elements necessary to consistently be top 10ish (at the end of the year) and almost never top 5.

Again, M is what it is. i think a lot of M's expectations go back to Bo. i've been around for 60 years. Bo wasn't the Bo of current M legend. and consequently, M isn't the potentially elite program that some suggest. Bo was an almost great coach and a very inspirational man. Bo was a winner, but Bo wasn't Bud Wilkinson, Bear Bryant, John McKay, Urban Meyers or Nick Saban. And M isn't Bama or USC or OSU. Very good, but not elite in football.

12/30/2018 - 7:37am why an absolute joke?  M is…

why an absolute joke?  M is not a joke it is what it is.  it is only ridiculous expectations vis a vis reality that color the perception of M as a joke.  Consider:

M is what it is;  a top 20 football program without a good recruiting base.  a program with a solid, but not innovative or inspiring coach.  a program that is top 20 because it has great resources and some cache, but not enough of the other elements necessary to consistently be top 10 (at the end of the year) and almost never top 5.

12/12/2018 - 8:27am first off.  i like 4 18 team…

first off.  i like 4 18 team conferences.

2 nine team divisions.

8 game division season.

division champs advance to conference championship game (CCG).  tiebreakers could get interesting, but i'm sure they could be figured out.

CCG winners advance to the final four.

teams can play inter-division teams, but the game doesn't count in division play.  in fact, i would encourage two inter-divion games a year.  one game could be a fixed opponent, for instance if purdue and indiana were split, they still could play.  i'll guess the game would matter.  kind of like how louisevill v kentucky matters in basketball.  my preferred split  would be michigan and msu.  the game would matter and there is the possibility of a rematch in the CCG.

12 game season with option of 2 extra games for non final four teams.  1 game played post season like a bowl game.  1 game played after spring practice.

Some accommodation would need to be made for the remaining 48 FBS schools not in play.

A few comments:

using only intra division games to qualify for CCG eliminates scheduling disadvantages for CCG qualification.  scheduling games with the other division allows schools like michigan and michigan state or indiana and purdue or illinois and northwestern to be in opposite divisions.  the teams could still play annually with the added bonus of possibly meeting in the CCG.

The 2 extra game idea equalizes practice time and gives Northern schools a game in the Spring.

i love relegation for european soccer.  i don't like it for college football.

11/26/2018 - 8:11pm demographics, geography,…

demographics, geography, institutional standards.  you said it all.  as i've said to many NC or bust excellence demanders .  Michigan hasn't been elite since the late 40's.  Very good ? sure.  Elite?  no.   Bo wasn't BO except in maize & blue mythology.  3 ten win seasons in 4  is a good start.

11/25/2018 - 8:19am 16 losses to OSU in 18 years…

Frank.  i swear a lot during and shortly after losses, too.  fact is  of the 16 of 18, JH has only coached 4 , 2 of which were blow outs.    osu has demographic and institutional advantages AND a great coach.   these are the deeper things  at play here.

09/08/2018 - 6:42am Probably should have hired…

Probably should have hired someone who knows how to run spread stuff instead of McElwain. Michigan's gameplan here was uninspired. No RPOs, few runs that gained much because they'd confused the defense, read option stuff that doesn't read or option anyone or even threaten to, almost no attempt to use Chris Evans as a spread weapon until it was hurry-up time.

i agree that JH missed an opportunity with the mcelwain hire.   i'd have preferred a younger, recruiting ace (btw, zach smith is available).  the larger hiring miss could very well be with his highest paid offensive assistant.

i think we need look no further than the headman and his mediocre recruiting $1M dollar assistant to see that the RPO stuff is not a sincere commitment.

01/09/2018 - 7:29am well thought out

reality bites.  M games are still great fun. i'll enjoy them as best i can and try not to look too far ahead or curse too far behind.

01/09/2018 - 7:17am agree with you

and it might help to move to Orlando, too.

01/09/2018 - 7:15am my reality, not suggesting it be yours.

I'll try to enjoy each game as a seperate event.  I am implying exactly what you think.

01/02/2018 - 11:22am wisconsin isn't in the B1G East

we play osu, psu & msu every year.  Win those 3 and the B1G CCG and we'll be a really good team.

01/02/2018 - 11:19am makes no sense to schedule tough non con games

I'll guess it is for ticket sales.  Lord knows, football must support 47 other sports (or whatever).

I disagree with the WE are Michgan crowd who say to be the best you've got to beat the best.  With Michigan's crazy scheduling , it is not likely that we will ever beat the best at the end of a season, because we'll never make it that far.  A B1G coach once told me that a team can only get up for 3 or 4 games a season.  Think about that.

12/19/2017 - 7:02am he plays against top MO competition
