Game times with the exception of the Texas game (big noon on Fox) have not been released yet so anything you see on X (formally Twitter) is just somebody's wild-ass-guess as to when the game will be played.
Nobody knows sweet fuck-all about shit right now. Nobody.
But I know sweet shit-all about fuck at all times. Me.
I'll take a wild-ass-guess and say that Ohio State is at Noon on Fox.
You seem pretty good at this - anything else you can share some insight about?
Nobody knows sweet fuck-all about shit right now. Nobody.
Wait a minute.... Has anyone ever seen mGrowOld and JUB in the same place at the same time?!?
Here's the home schedule... let's see...
- August 31st: Fresno State
- September 7th: Texas - Big Noon - already announced
- September 14th: Arkansas State
- September 21st: USC - possible night game
- September 28th: Minnesota
- October 26th: Michigan State
- November 2nd: Oregon - possible night game
- November 23rd: Northwestern
You know BTN will want that Arkansas State night game...sigh...
To be fair, people watching BTN that day will have just seen Iowa-Troy and might need the BTN version of a palate cleanser.
Arkansas State will be the Homecoming opponent, even though it will be quite early in the calendar for that honor. So probably not a night game.
Great to hear! :)
With the exception of Texas as already announced. Any one of those remaining games could be at night. Obviously marquee games like MSU, USC, Oregon would be great.
Since the actual game being played no longer matters for determining time slot and BTN always gives us a shit game at night Fresno, Arkansas St, and Minnesota are all very real possibilities there.
I believe they got rid of the rule about not having any night games after first weekend in Nov so technically NW could be at night as well.
5 straight home games is nice when you're breaking in a new QB and O-line. Since going on the road early against a cupcake is never going happen, the alternative (Texas and/or USC on the road) isn't very attractive.
Seems like we have a night game the first Saturday in November every year. Time for some Cold Duck?
Today is the day the networks (FOX, CBS, NBC) are having their "draft" as to which weeks they get first pick of B1G game.
The "rules" of the draft: FOX has the 1st, 2nd and 3rd picks ... then the order is either CBS/NBC/FOX or NBC/CBS/FOX for all weeks following.
I'm sure some leaks will come out eventually. But about all we can safely say for now:
- FOX will definitely choose Weeks 2 and Week 14 among their first 3 picks. And elect to show Texas @ Michigan (already announced) and Michigan @ Ohio State at Noon both weeks.
- FOX's 3rd week? Can't say for certain. But it's probably either Week 3 (Alabama @ Wisconsin), Week 4 (USC @ Michigan) or Week 10 (several pretty good B1G games, but not sure at this point which one will be better).
- If FOX chooses Week 4, then USC will undoubtedly be a Noon game. If FOX doesn't choose Week 4, then USC will very likely be either a 3:30 game (if CBS gets it) or a 7:30 game (if NBC gets it).
- In other words ----- I just told you that "USC @ Michigan" could be at either Noon, 3:30 or 7:30. E.g., I broke no news. :-)
- Beyond that ...... who the heck knows. We'll just have to wait for the leaks.
Nittany you might know better than I, but with the new deal is Fox contractually obligated to put their marquee matchups at noon? Otherwise I could very easily see them wanting that OSU & Oregon game in mid October and just shoving it at 4 or night (I also didn't look up MLB playoff potential conflicts).
Otherwise I'm sure the OSU @ PSU game on Nov 2 will also be a contender. Although it loses some broadcast juice with that game being at noon instead of late afternoon or night.
I don't think they're contractually obligated. There were 3 weeks last year where FOX had a 3:30 B1G game and no Noon B1G game. Week 5 (U-M/Nebraska) was one of them.
But I think it's going to be significantly more rare. Last year, CBS only had rights to broadcast 7 B1G games and they still had the SEC package. So they had only had 2 3:30 B1G games (1 was UNLV/Michigan). This year, CBS has rights to broadcast 15 B1G games and of course the SEC package is gone. So they're almost always going to have a 3:30 game now.
Add that to NBC having a nearly weekly prime-time B1G game --- and FOX would basically have* to have a Noon game to avoid competing against the other networks.
-----
*CBS/FOX could theoretically flip-flop: a CBS game at Noon & FOX at 3:30. But it would have to theoretically benefit both networks. It's tough to imagine too many scenarios like that. CBS wouldn't want to be completely dark at 3:30, and they have no other rights besides the Mountain West. The Big XII losing UT & Oklahoma makes it a lot tougher for FOX to put a great Big XII game at Noon and a B1G game at 3:30.
I would believe that if Penn State "had their choice" - that the November 2nd game - PSU hosting OSU - would be a night game - "White Out" - etc.. But, what say does any team / athletic department have in determing the kickoff time for a game?
It seems like - "very little to none".
PSU is getting ZERO say on game time for OSU. Whatever network gets 1st pick of games that week - they are going to have a number of theoretically good games (including Oregon @ Michigan) to choose between and they're going to wait to see how the season plays out. They won't choose before late October.
It is what it is. I think the "officially branded PSU WhiteOut" (TM) is a bit played out, given folks wear white to basically EVERY PSU home game. But PSU wants to have an annual WhiteOut (TM) game, they want the WhiteOut (TM) at night and they want to preannounce the WhiteOut (TM). So I'd guess, much like 2022 & 2023, the WhiteOut (TM) will be a more "mid" game (like UCLA/PSU) where none of the networks particularly care if it's preannounced for 7:30.
That's a long way of answering your question --- the schools don't have much say anymore.
NF - thanks.
My personal view is - it’s so unfortunate. The White Out (TM) creates a significant advantage for PSU - and, you want / need that advantage when you can capitalize on it.
I’m too idealistic - and - wish for those “days of yore”. The media dollars drive it all.
Honestly, I would love to see that network draft and some of the reactions...
From https://www.johncanzano.com/p/canzano-plotting-in-big-ten-pac-12:
"Retired Fox Sports Network President Bob Thompson likened the process to a game of “three-dimensional chess.”
Ohio State at Oregon? USC at Michigan? Michigan-Ohio State? Washington at Penn State?...
Said Thompson: “Fox has the first pick and it will be Ohio State-Michigan. Always has been, always will be.”
I'd bet @Washington
I hope so, because it will suck for those planning to attend if that's a BIG NOON game (aka 9AM Pacific).
I believe Fox has openly stated that they will not choose games played on the West Coast for B1G Noon.
I think it’s pretty safe to say the @UDub game will be either 330pm ET on CBS or 730pm ET on NBC. Very outside chance it could be a late night 1030pm ET kick, but doubtful.
I’ll be there with 17 other Wolverines! Already have my tickets lined up!
They have been shooting the "Here Comes Saturday Night" commercials with players from all the teams.
Those are the ones I've been talking about and asking about. Seems as if it's damn near determined that there will be a night game... I'm hoping 'lil brother or USC.... and I am HERE for it!
A pretty reliable insider told me a couple weeks ago that USC is a night game.
hahahaha - your screen name triggers me lol... I can remember when I use to just blurt out FUCK Jim Tressel anytime I heard his name. no matter if it was on TV, the radio, or in conversation. as soon as his name came out - FUCK Jim Tressel. I can say that (for some reason) I hated him more than Urban Meyer and Ryan Day
Maybe because he’s the king of hypocrisy
I assume its buckeye beat reporter pete thamel
Best way to guess the kickoff time for one of our games:
- Check every B1G team’s gam for the week. If we are in the best game or at least within the top 3, expect that we will be at noon on Fox.
- If we are the second best game and play away, we will be playing a night game.
- Don’t expect 3:30 games.
There are going to be a lot more 3:30 games with CBS having the conference full time starting this year. They will have second or third pick most weeks.
Oh I did not realize they had expanded rights this year. They had such sporadic coverage of B1G last year (I believe they only did the UNLV game for us last year).
I am excited then for that. I think CBS’ overall production is pretty good. Fox when on B1G Noon is great (polarizing view I know), but their side by side replays and overall speed they do replays is the best. Also Klatt’s analysis is the best of any color commentator in the business. I was not at all impressed with NBC last year.
USC is definitely a night game. Not sure about any others.
You can all thank Kevin Warren for all the TV bullshit fuckery. He fixed the 2021 Staee game and then basically didn’t give a shit what happened after that and left in the middle of negotiations for the new TV deal.
Are you suggesting that Kevin Warren should have told his son … “I’m glad you enjoy playing football - but, with my role in the B1G conference - it would be better if you transferred to a school that was not in the B1G to avoid any perception of a conflict of interest.”
Yeah.. that would be logical - reflecting intelligence and sportsmanship. That’s probably why it never occurred to Warren to say.
Do you have a preference for kickoff times?
I enjoy tailgating - a lot. We’re in the lot and setting up as soon as the lot opens - so, depending on kickoff time - it could be a long day.
3:30 starts - especially in September - are fantastic. A long day of tailgating - warm weather - and, time after the game to continue the festivities - let the traffic die down - and enjoy it with a bit of evening sunshine and comfortable temperatures. Night games in September can be fun too.. though, the post game festivities really don’t take place.
Mid-October and later.. my preference is… “not night”… noon / 3:30’s give plenty of time to enjoy everything.
For the West Coast matchups - It seems to me that 3:30 pm EDT kickoffs make the most sense - for players and fans. It will be interesting to see what actually happens.
3:30 is the sweet spot. It's perfect. It leaves plenty of time for tailgating / pregaming, while allowing you to get home before midnight. It's getting dark when the games end, so there is a bit of a night game feel as well.
We used to have lots of these games, but we have had very few recently. I hope that CBS fixes this. The 3:30 SEC games on CBS were always a highlight on Saturdays. I'm sure that CBS would like to keep that going.
as event staff - I hope for evening or night games... that lets me go enjoy the early tailgate festivities before my 3 hour prior to game report time. your drunken user will show you to your seat now haha...
