It has come to blows between Impemba and Allen
There have been rumors about these two not getting along for some time. Now we know why Gibby and Shep had to fill in Wednesday night.
September 6th, 2018 at 11:15 AM ^
It's all making sense now.
September 6th, 2018 at 10:58 AM ^
Too bad, They are actually great together in both. This explains why the Tigers kept bringing in additional people that were invariably worse than those two alone.
September 6th, 2018 at 11:02 AM ^
I love Gibby, but he's so monotone anymore that it's hard to listen to. His voice is like nails on a chalkboard to my wife. Thankfully, since they're so bad, I don't watch many games lately.
September 6th, 2018 at 11:37 AM ^
My wife won't pay any attention if gibby is on the broadcast. I don't like listening to him either but it's been reported that his parkinson's meds are causing the slow speech so I understand.
September 6th, 2018 at 1:49 PM ^
Same here. Wife can't stand Gibby's monotone delivery. Not watching much lately anyway. Tigers need to upgrade on Price with somebody younger. And these are all great guys I'm sure but another is Paul Woods on Red Wings radio. Get someone from the recent Cup winning years.
September 6th, 2018 at 11:03 AM ^
So the Tigers have more talent at hitting in the press box than on the field. Good to know.
September 6th, 2018 at 11:51 AM ^
i'm sure there were a lot of swings and misses
September 6th, 2018 at 11:14 AM ^
It's been pretty clear for years that Mario and Rod hate each other. They'd try to hide it, but you'd catch little glimpses here and there, jokes about never hanging out on road trips, little barbs disguised as banter... I'm surprised it took this long for them to really go at it.
September 6th, 2018 at 11:18 AM ^
These guys broadcast games, how could it be that serious? I guess announcers have huge ego's also.
September 6th, 2018 at 11:22 AM ^
Mario is the most obnoxious SOB ever..... Sister Jean would want to punch him in the face if she had to deal with him daily. In my opinion.
If I had to guess.... Rod said something and Mario tripped over his tongue correcting him, like he always does, and Rod had enough.
Don't call me Krissy..... you call me krissy one more time......
September 6th, 2018 at 11:28 AM ^
Hope it’s just Rod that’s back. Impemba is too vanilla, even for a play by play guy. Think of Ken Daniels with the wings — adds great energy to even the play by play.
September 6th, 2018 at 11:34 AM ^
Rod has gotten ENTIRELY too much mileage out of his 90+ at bats on the ‘84 team. Does anyone really remember him being on that team?
September 6th, 2018 at 12:19 PM ^
I don't. I still have a sweatshirt from after they won the W.S. and he's not on it.
September 6th, 2018 at 12:52 PM ^
15 games, 31 plate appearances, 27 at bats, 8 hits, 8 strike outs.

He did play in Jack Morris' no-hitter game against the White Sox FWIW
September 6th, 2018 at 11:45 AM ^
When I was growing up, it seemed that the local teams were blessed with outstanding local broadcasting teams.
Tigers had Ernie and Paul, and Al and George on TV. All were great in different ways.
Michigan had Ufer, and later Beckmann and Brandy. Top notch all.
Wings had Bruce and Sid, and a string of guys like Dave Strader and Ken and Mickey.
Piston had and have George who was born at age 85 and seemingly never ages.
Look at the shit show now.
Price is bad.
Allen is bad.
Gibby is bad.
Ken Kal and Paul Woods are barely tolerable sometimes.
Brandy got moved from a spot he was good at (color) to one he's terrible at (play by play).
September 6th, 2018 at 12:20 PM ^
Funny you mentioned Paul Woods. I think he has been the color guy ever since I started following hockey in the late 80s.
September 6th, 2018 at 1:15 PM ^
Paul Woods is an international treasure. He and Bruce Martyn were the perfect pair. That era, along with Ernie and Paul, was probably the last era in which I would acty turn the TV off so as to hear the radio call. All radio announcers suck these days.
September 6th, 2018 at 6:59 PM ^
You can try to do a Paul Woods impression, but it's nigh on impossible because that perfect cadence is so difficult to actually replicate in your speech even if you can hear it in your head. But I always feel like Paul adds tremendous insight with the right amount of energy.
September 6th, 2018 at 7:53 PM ^
Ken Kal gave me tickets to a game he broadcast in the early 90’s. He was the voice of a college team long before he was the play by play man for the wings. He modeled his style after Bruce Martin. He replaced Bruce because of that.
i loved his after game interviews w/Red after every game...
September 6th, 2018 at 9:53 PM ^
All time best Red Wings announcers were Bruce Martyn and Sid Abel. They did both TV and radio. Never will forget early 70's when I first became a hockey fan watching them and Bob Cole on Hockey Night in Canada.
September 6th, 2018 at 11:46 AM ^
Not a Tigers fan (or even a big baseball fan) so I assumed that this was in reference to the earlier deleted thread. It is only time before one of those types of threads escalates beyond words :).
September 6th, 2018 at 12:05 PM ^
They must have both been playing the Rod Allen drinking game and it got out of hand.
September 6th, 2018 at 1:37 PM ^
This is a seriously underrated comment.
September 7th, 2018 at 12:43 PM ^
I'm giving +1 to Bacon without even reading his comment. That's what happens when you don a Wolverhampton logo in my book...
Well played, sir. Now if Neves could score a few more from mid range, please?
September 6th, 2018 at 12:27 PM ^
How about an OT in the post title for those of us who DON'T GIVE A FUCK.
September 6th, 2018 at 12:45 PM ^
Poor guy, you sound really upset.
September 6th, 2018 at 12:47 PM ^
Does Michigan have any Impemba's on their team that you know of?
September 7th, 2018 at 2:27 AM ^
We don't have have an Impemba but we did have an [Kenny] Allen in 2016. I wrongly assumed this was related to that Allen. I don't live in Michigan anymore so I don't follow the Tigers, and I don't know who the broadcasters are. I am not wrong that this should be labeled OT however.
September 6th, 2018 at 12:49 PM ^
You got to be a real dope if you don't think it is OT.
September 6th, 2018 at 3:57 PM ^
I'm guessing by the number of comments in this thread you are in the minority. This post is 1000x better than another one about our left tackle situation.
September 6th, 2018 at 12:54 PM ^
Bob Uecker is watching intently.
September 6th, 2018 at 1:12 PM ^
Impemba has always been a knob. Good for Rod!
September 6th, 2018 at 1:36 PM ^
They're both awful. Mario is painfully boring and Rod is a major jocksniffer.
September 6th, 2018 at 1:42 PM ^
who is blowing whom
September 6th, 2018 at 2:35 PM ^
I wonder if they did play-by-play out loud during their fight because that would be totally awesome.
September 6th, 2018 at 2:43 PM ^
"If you say JOE MAUER just ONCE more...."
"JOE MAUER!"
*scuffle ensues*
September 6th, 2018 at 2:57 PM ^
This is unfortunate, as it will probably make things weird going forward. I like Rod and Mario, but Rod is really a bit comical. I’d rather keep Mario if we only get to keep one. I could listen to Dickerson announce anything and I like how he and Price call the games. Keep them together.
Gibby? The games are ROUGH when he calls most of the time, due to his monotonous delivery and his one word responses.
September 6th, 2018 at 3:01 PM ^
I give Gibby a pass since his Parkinsans disease is what causes the monotone delivery. He still has a lot of good insight he brings to the game.
September 6th, 2018 at 3:19 PM ^
Gibson's current situation shouldn't be held against him. And if it was discovered that the powers that be basically kept him in the broadcasting rotation just because he needed some extra work given his circumstances, would anyone really be upset about that? I wouldn't.
September 6th, 2018 at 4:14 PM ^
They should box for charity.
September 6th, 2018 at 4:26 PM ^
Good, maybe they will get a better pair, I have never cared for either style.
September 6th, 2018 at 5:29 PM ^
These guys are idiots. All they have to do is:
1) Announce some baseball games
2) Don't punch each other in the face
3) Collect their huge paychecks
I know they have been trying to replace Allen for years because Mario hates him, and I love Jack & Gibby as much as anyone, but man, neither of them has ever been very good. I know Gibby is sick, and I'm not saying get rid of him or anything, but he wasn't good even before that.
September 7th, 2018 at 12:46 PM ^
It was a choke hold, not a punch in the face. Subtle yet important point, since I love the idea of Impemba getting submissioned slowly out rather than the single shot in the face and good night. But that's me..
September 6th, 2018 at 6:38 PM ^
Second deck!
September 6th, 2018 at 7:01 PM ^
I miss Josh Lewin, because, in addition to being good at his job, he would also slip in Simpsons references during the game that would utterly confuse Gibby.
September 6th, 2018 at 8:49 PM ^
I really liked Lewin. I believe he works for the Mets now.
September 7th, 2018 at 8:14 AM ^
Yep, he also does UCLA football and basketball, which is not a bad gig at all.
September 6th, 2018 at 7:13 PM ^
Apparently at one point, Rod had Mario in a choke hold.
If that's the case, Rod's gotta go. If it were the other way around, and Mario was trying to choke Rod, then Mario would have to go.
Mario allegedly has a reputation for being a true professional, while Rod is regarded as a boob. That would not surprise me in the least.
September 6th, 2018 at 8:37 PM ^
This is out of an episode of Brockmire... an underrated show.
