So much for the “Drake is a serious dude” rumor. This guy looks no more serious than Gee.
August 22nd, 2018 at 10:54 PM ^
Yeah, I was in the "Drake is a serious dude" crowd. I was dead wrong.
Drake probably wishes he stayed at UC-Irvine. Don't have to worry about football there.

Both Gene Smith and Urban Meyer admitted they fucked up URBAN SAID: "I WISH I HAD DONE MORE AND KNEW MORE" ... both issue are cause fr termination ... in terms of hiring Zach Smith originally and dealing with the abuse of his wife. Both Gene and Urban should have been fired base upon poor management skills. If they made those kind of rookie mistakes based upon OSU's criteria for competence, then they should be fired.
August 22nd, 2018 at 10:11 PM ^
Just was watching the presser on College Footbally Live, and quite frankly it's insulting that they think anyone would buy that bullshit. Urban knew about the 2015 stuff but forgot during Big Ten Media Day? And they were impressed by his commitment to respecting women?? And they didn't report the issue to compliance but they basically just didn't care about that? Such a joke. Hate OSU so much.
August 22nd, 2018 at 10:12 PM ^
Urban Meyer is a deliberate liar.
August 22nd, 2018 at 10:14 PM ^
The many awful scandals involving schools in our conference is really distressing.
The response of the institutions is worse.
It's become clear that the athletic programs at many of our conference schools are operating at an SEC level of corruption (or even worse).
The whole MSU situation is disgusting. Engler and the school acted absolutely without integrity.
I was holding out hope that OSU would do the right thing and fire that crooked SOB; taking firm and clear action that says "this won't do". Instead, they continue to employ a scumbag and his enabling AD.
More and more, I believe that P5 power football is eventually going to divide, and Michigan might distance itself from this crap.
I wouldn't be surprised if schools like Northwestern, UVA, Stanford, Duke, Wake, BC, Vandy, etc. split off and formed their own level of more amateur college football, leaving the SEC, OSU and others to become ever more professional and money-focused.
It would be a tough call for Michigan, because of their history, stadium, and national profile - but at some point, supporting a never-ending arms race seems antithetical to the mission of the university. The ivies, service academies and U of Chicago were once at the top of college football; they all decided it just wasn't worth it anymore.
Who knows? Maybe OSU will just eventually join the SEC, where they seem to belong.
August 22nd, 2018 at 10:15 PM ^
I've said it all along 2 - 3 game suspension. My questions are. In 2015 when Urban and Gene talked about the DV allegation, why is it Urban's responsibility to go to compliance? If Urban followed proper protocal, that's Gene's responsibility. There is a chain of command you know, it sounds like Gene didn't follow proper procedures. And I find it hard to believe Shelley didn't share those text messages with Urban. Urban looked like he aged 10 years. Listen Urban is an arrogant coach, but what coach with his record isn't.
August 22nd, 2018 at 10:18 PM ^
To answer your first question, it doesn’t matter why. He is required, and OSU is trying to split the hair that he didn’t understand that he was supposed to. That’s what bullshit. (Part of it anyway)
August 22nd, 2018 at 10:20 PM ^
Then why have a chain of command?
August 22nd, 2018 at 10:25 PM ^
I’m saying there isn’t. Not for this. His responsibility is to report it to compliance. Not the AD. Well maybe also the AD, I don’t know. But compliance for sure. That was said multiple times.
August 22nd, 2018 at 10:31 PM ^
If your boss doesn't do the right thing, you go above the boss. That is what people should do in public organizations. If Meyer was stern, the AD would have been made a joke. I am serious. Meyer can find a job anywhere. AD will have trouble. Having a COC is good but a powerful coach like Meyer could have done more.

So I'm not positive this is how it works in Ohio, but this is how it works at my institution (I am a professor at a state flagship university in the western half of the US).
Because I have some level of oversight of other people, I'm considered a mandatory reporter. Basically if I hear of or see any sexual harassment, domestic violence, etc., I have to report it to a specific office in my university that deals with these things. This office can investigate, help victims, issue punishments (I think), etc. I'm not required to report it to my department chair, dean, etc., but rather to this specific office whose sole purpose is to investigate and deal with these matters.
If a student comes to me and says they were sexually harassed by another professor, I have to report it (even if the student doesn't want it reported). If I hear another professor is beating is wife, I have to report it. More or less if there is any connection to the University and I become aware of it, I have to report it to this office.
I believe the reason that I report it to the specific office and not my superior up the chain of command is that 1) my superiors may have other motives and this prevents it from getting buried (e.g., Gene Smith says Zach Smith is embarrassing, let's not let it get out, when really it should be investigated and help offered to his wife), 2) the office actually has the ability to investigate. So while I certainly can't carry out the investigations on my own (and Urban Meyer likely can't either), there are likely people at OSU that do this very thing.
At my institution, just reporting this to Gene Smith would be insufficient for the important reasons above. So again, I'm not sure the OSU works the same way my institution does, but I would be surprised if it is very different.
August 22nd, 2018 at 10:33 PM ^
Of course Shelley shared the text messages with her husband. It's not going to be as apparent just what was shared between Urban and Gene (and the balance of power is interesting too). It took multiple hours of many meetings to arrive at the result handed down today.
Yes, Urban is arrogant, and sanctimonious in the same vein as Hugh Freeze. What I like best about today's decision is that Urban must know that he can't continue to operate in the same consequence free environment, at least, not as much. Today OSU as an academic institution, showed that they are a step above MSU - although that is a low bar, it's something!
August 22nd, 2018 at 10:35 PM ^
Smith should absolutely have reported; so should Meyer. ZS was out of control and apparently doing bad things for years.
Meyer doesn't need to get Smith's approval to fire an assistant, and he obviously knew far more about ZS than Gene. He hired him apparently without disclosing what ZS did at Florida. He had many, many opportunities to do the right thing and can his ass.
The entire rationale for not firing Meyer rests on believing his claim that he followed procedure. Do you really believe that, after hearing him blatantly lie, again and again?
The media day performance was terrible, and tonight's was no better. There's no way he didn't see those emails, didn't see those pictures.
Be honest; you all knew what you were getting when you hired Meyer - you knew what kind of program he ran at Florida.
He's a fantastic recruiter, a big-time winning coach, and a guy willing to look the other way and operate with shady ethics.
Now we all know he's also a serial liar.
August 22nd, 2018 at 10:58 PM ^
A couple thoughts:
1. That 2015 conversation would also have been a good time to bring up the 2009 incident that he never told Gene about, but he still hid it.
2. Is there a good reason that Gene Smith wasn't fired? He seems to be trying to take the blame for not reporting the 2015 incident, and given his many oversight oversights dating back to the Tressel era, I have to ask, what exactly does he do at OSU?
3. I have to give you a tiny modicum of credit for being the rare OSU fan that thinks that Urban Meyer actually talks to his wife about things. Since you believe that, you also must believe that Urban blatantly lied to the press again during that press conference.

McMurphy has shared the original 2015 arrest report on fb.
August 22nd, 2018 at 10:21 PM ^
I'm actually glad it didn't rise to the level of firing.
I want Michigan to beat Ohio State with Meyer at the helm.

The BoT had to have someone contact McMurphy & get an assurance that there wasn't more ready to be published.... Cuz if more comes out, osu will be swirling the bowl.
August 22nd, 2018 at 10:25 PM ^
The report is all over the place. He lied, but he didn't, well he did but "didn't deliberately" do so. He "failed to monitor" but wasn't guilty of a lack of oversight. Nuance!
All this hemming and hawing suggests one thing: if he had a worse won-loss record, he'd be out the door.
August 22nd, 2018 at 10:29 PM ^
The moral bankruptcy of an increasing number of college football programs is really exhausting. What a pathetic display we've seen this summer.
August 22nd, 2018 at 10:30 PM ^
Would John Cooper have gotten a three game suspension?
I didn’t think so either. But whatever, just glad this shit is over and we can officially move on to the season.
August 22nd, 2018 at 11:00 PM ^
I know one thing. Ichigan fans wouldn't of been so pissed off because Coop couldn't win the game.
August 22nd, 2018 at 11:07 PM ^

When Urban was asked his message for Courtney Smith, his response:
"I have a message for everyone involved in this. I'm sorry we're in this situation."
Yikes...
August 22nd, 2018 at 10:57 PM ^
That statement was bad --- Meyer had the opportunity to come off as human ("I'm sorry Courtney, you deserved better.")
He didn't do it. Where's his soul?

BTW, still waiting for jay paterno to say something like that to the victims that his father enabled sandusky to do for so many years.

Would love to see us win and then present a LARGE banner at the game that reads:
WELCOME BACK URBAN, REPORT THIS BEATING !

Holy Shit dude why are you replying so much on a michigan message board? You have more posts on this thread than anyone and it’s mostly trivial bullshit trashtalk. Occasionally you have a pretty good post and I think you must be all right, but I just don’t understand your need to interject random “Good luck winning for once” comments so much.

It is so hard to respect the NCAA (referring in this case to the brass a ofu). 3 games is such a complete joke. To be able to hand down such a ridiculous penalty says all I need to know about the cowards at ofu. I guess I'm glad our coaches have some integrity. No justice.

As you exploit a woman as your avatar.
August 23rd, 2018 at 9:15 AM ^
Ahh, yes. Good 'ole moral equivalence of wife beating (also cheating with a staffer) and having a scantily clad woman as an internet avatar. Good talk, man.
The cognitive dissonance in your fanbase is quite spectacular to witness. You really are a bunch of truckers, aren't you?
August 22nd, 2018 at 11:37 PM ^
I still think they end up with a disappointing season and this backfires down the road somehow. There’s a saying, “as it begins, so it goes” and I believe that’s true. This season has started off fucked for them and it will continue. Hard for me to imagine they still have an 11 win season and win the Big Ten. Time for us to put on big boy pants and fuck them up in Columbus. If for nothing else, decensecy’s sake.
August 23rd, 2018 at 12:12 AM ^
Meyer got off very lightly for the failure to supervise such a terrible human being. Those who hold him up as such a wonderful coach need to read the report and rethink their position.
I will always remember Meyer for his mishandling of Zac Smith as I remember Tressell for tattoos. His winning record is irreparably tarnished, as is his legacy.
August 23rd, 2018 at 12:15 AM ^
Urban (and OSU) is actually getting roasted on BTN right now....
Gerry came on and grilled Urban and OSU and now Nicole Auerbach from The All-American is on and she is absolutely roasting Urban and OSU calling all this a joke and embarassing.
Yeah, this is not going away for Urban nor OSU anytime soon....
August 23rd, 2018 at 7:12 AM ^
The same way it hasn't gone away for Izzo or Dantonio at MSU? Sorry, but in two months, when Meyer's back on the sidelines and OSU is 8-0, ranked in the Top 5, and a strong contender for a spot in the CFP, nobody will be talking about this anymore.
August 23rd, 2018 at 11:06 AM ^
Anyone who thought Meyer would receive any "punishment" more than this 3-nonconference game wrist-slap might be interested in a New York bridge I have for sale.
August 23rd, 2018 at 12:15 AM ^
If you are a domestic violence victim out there, and are currently in an abusive relationship, are you more likely to come forward and report the abuse, after the Columbus dog and pony show today, or are victims more likely to remain in their private hell? I fear that the latter is the result of the outcome in Columbus today. OSU had a chance today to make a very powerful statement. They failed. I submit to you my colleagues, that this is the bigger question and is the heart of the issue. Did our American society take a step forward today concerning domestic violence? No, we have to admit we did not. Clearly, we all lost.
