August 21st, 2018 at 5:15 PM ^
Kansas. Dust in the Wind. Thank you, Pandora shuffle.
Current stations in the ST3 shuffle:
Iron Maiden, Urge Overkill, The Smiths, Big Head Todd & the Monsters, Babymetal, R.E.M., Simon&Garfunkel, Johnny Cash, Rush, and Lloyd Cole. When I hear some new music that I like, I'll be sure to let you know.

Iron Maiden, Urge Overkill, The Smiths, Big Head Todd & the Monsters, Babymetal, R.E.M., Simon&Garfunkel, Johnny Cash, Rush, and Lloyd Cole.
One of these things is not like the others, one of these things doesn't belong...
I'm feeling the Babymetal love, but it's is a weird outlier in your list.
August 21st, 2018 at 10:06 PM ^
I like Babymetal. Enough to even go see them live - could not believe how all-over-the-place that crowd was. They actually have two different back up bands - at least they used to. One was the legit players - the other was just for show. Anyway - speaking of Babymetal, if you like them definitely check out Ladybaby:

I remember in the late 90's saying to a friend that I didn't get U2's whole Zootopia thing and why they were doing electronica rave music. He looked at me blankly and said, "because they were all on ecstasy." (That's what they used to call Molly.) I had no idea.
Inspired by this thread, I just looked up this Drake fella and everyone of his songs on Spotify is 10 times as popular as any of the music I listen to. To be honest, it's really pretty bland music and all sounds the same. (At least the three songs I listened to.) My question is this.
What drug are people on now that Drake (and that whole monotone rap over very simple drum machines genre) sound good?
August 21st, 2018 at 5:29 PM ^
The Emergency Broadcast Network were responsible for the whole U2 ZOO TV thing. I got to see them at St. Andrews Hall once and they were amazing. So ahead of their time!

Animal Collective - Tangerine Reef
Jayhawks - Back Roads & Abandoned Motels
& digitally manipulating (fixing) albums like Radiohead -“The King Of Limbs” by adding Supercollider, The Butcher, Staircase & The Daily Mail. Now it’s a great album.
August 21st, 2018 at 9:41 PM ^
The Jayhawks are great!
August 21st, 2018 at 10:20 PM ^
THE DAILY MAIL!
I'll never understand how that song didn't end up on an album. It's so good.
August 21st, 2018 at 5:26 PM ^
J. Cole - KOD, he continues to amaze me with every album he puts out. Its always completely different from any of his previous albums
Parkway Drive - Reverence, can't wait to go see these guys live someday, they seem like they'd be ridiculous live
Get Up Kids - Kicker, super poppy kinda emo band that you can't help but sing along to. Melodics are underrated as well, I've listened to these guys for close to 20 years.
Highly Suspect - Mister Asylum & The Boy Who Died Wolf, I started out thinking these guys were ok and different. I now can just play both albums all of the way through, amazing band.
Thrice - To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere, have also been listening to these guys for close to 20 years. They started out as a kinda emo, punky band and have evolved into a dirty, big arena rock kinda feel. I feel like my musical tastes have grown with this band. One of my all time favs, I have every one of their albums
These are just five off of the top of my head, do yourself a favor and at least check out a few songs off of each one!
August 21st, 2018 at 6:10 PM ^
Dang 20 years. I started to listen to Thrice either around freshman/soph year of HS when The Illusion of Safety came out. I have to admit that I wasn't a huge fan of the changes to their sound when Vheissu came out. Then my musical taste also grew and was a really big fan of The Alchemy Index albums. I was underwhelmed with both Beggars and Major/Minor, but a huge fan of TBEITBN. Identity Crisis is still one of my favorite all time albums and can listen to it without skipping a track.
Have you listened to any of Dustin Kensrue's solo stuff? I enjoy his solo stuff too.
August 21st, 2018 at 6:40 PM ^
Yeah I saw them at a show with Midtown, damn it had to be like 2001 or 2002 and became hooked since. I went to see Midtown and Thrice totally stole the show. I was 17 or 18 at the time. So I guess more like 16-17 years ago, but damn near 20 years I guess (effin a, reading that I'm getting kinda old...). Dustin's solo stuff is pretty legit, albeit a bit different than Thrice's music. A couple other bands from that era that I really like are Stavesacre and Project 86. Project 86 reminds me of early Thrice stuff. If you haven't heard of them check them out. Project 86's best albums IMO are "Drawing Black Lines", "...And The Rest Will Follow" and "Rival Factions". If you wanna check out Stavesacre I'd recommend the albums "Friction", "Absolutes", "Speakeasy" and "stavz'a'ker".

I saw a certain movie this past weekend that had “Its too late to turn back now” in the soundtrack, so that’s been stuck in my head the past few days. It’s on my phone now.
I was watching the Vietnam documentary by Ken Burns and “Are you experienced?” by Jimi Hendrix was used in a segment. I’ve been digging through old Hendrix tunes, too. Are You Experienced? is coming out on hi-def SACD in about a month. I pre-ordered a copy. I’m sure it will sound way better than my beat up vinyl record.

OK for indie/(dance)rock - I can't stop listing to Castlecomer - brand new and ridiculously addictive:
For indie/Electronic - the new Billie Eilish track is on repeat:
New Slaves track is another one I got on repeat - 2 months old - new album coming:
For new rock tracks, I'm living on Ghost, Red Sun Rising, and grandson...
For new hip-hop/R&B - BROCKHAMPTON, Maya B, Sheck Wes, Melii...
And somehow this kid slipped past me earlier this year - but Hobo Johnson has got my ear now - cannot stop listening to this and cannot wait to see this kid live:

Parquet Courts - Wide Awake (favorite album of the year)
The Jayhawks - Backroads and Abandoned Motels
Ruen Bros. - All My Shades of Blue (Rick Rubin produced)
Jeff Rosenstock - Worry
Freur - Doot-Doot
Jeff Lynne/ELO
and a buddy's song: sweet drums on this track - a nice Ringo-esque back beat

When I saw the Ruen Brothers in 2013 I thought they were going to be massive. Not sure what happened there. "Aces" was great.
August 21st, 2018 at 5:57 PM ^
Album took me for surprise. Initially, I thought the choruses were a tad too slick for me, and lyrically its just OK/fine, but man those guys are melody makers. Impressive album. How it holds over time for me, who knows? But I've enjoyed it this summer.

The Struts - they opened for FF in Chicago. Great retro glam sound (think combo of Bowie and Queen). Lots of fun.

"Everybody Wants" was my favorite album of 2016. I must've listened to it everyday. And you obviously know how fun they are live. I'm bummed I missed the FF shows but I got my chance to see them a bunch. The lyrics to "Ol's Switcheroo" are fantastic. Can't wait for the new album to come out.

The top 2 cds of the year for me:
1. Tearing at the Seams, by Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats
2. Dictator, by Scars on Broadway
August 21st, 2018 at 6:45 PM ^
Nathaniel is my boy! Nice pick! And thanks for the heads up on Scars on Broadway. SOAD is my favorite band of ALL time but I've never got into any of Serj's solo work and I kind of liked the first SoB album. Now that I've come to the realization that SOAD will never release new material - I feel like I better get on board with Darron and SoB.
August 22nd, 2018 at 8:40 AM ^
I’ve been blown away by Nathaniel’s second cd - just top notch from start to finish. Also, the SoB cd is fantastic. Darron has long been the creative force of SOAD and you can really tell on this second cd.

August 21st, 2018 at 7:14 PM ^
Thanks for sharing! Cody could have definitely made my list.

Almost forgot to put my favorite indie rock harp goddess on this new music list - Mikaela Davis:
And speaking of Rock goddesses - listen to Dorothy if you like classic rock but don't know what to listen to nowadays:

The only two releases from 2018 that I've listened to thus far are the new Jedi Mind tricks, and the debut album from a black metal band called Dawnbreaker. Both were excellent.

As far as non classic music goes? Claypool Lennon Delirium (boomerang baby), St. Vincent(cruel), Shearwater(backchannels), Chvrches(science and visions, recover) Chairlift(romeo, cha-ching) Tycho(literally any album), Grimes(blood without flesh) and General Fuzz(comfort zone, go inward) probably take up most of my contemporary listening.

I rediscovered some obscure-semi-obscure U2 tracks this summer thanks to The U2 Experience on SiriusXM (Disappearing Act, Wire, Hawkmoon 269, Zooropa)
The Killers' new album ~Wonderful, Wonderful~ is not _as strong_ as some of the previous albums, or Brandon Flowers first solo album, ~Flamingo~, but "Some Kind of Love", "Rut", and "Life to Come" are all very good.

plus lots o' babes:
Tash Sultana, the Pretty Reckless, Tei Shi, Bishop Briggs, Alice Merton, Meg Myers, Verite, Holy Moly and the Crackers, Dorothy, Allie X, KFlay, Little Dragon, Anima!
but the best might be ...female singers and male beat makers:
Lion Babe, Marian Hill, Sofi Tucker, Sylvan Esso, MS MR, Oh Wonder, Phantogram, Chairlifting, Tennis

Piggybacking on your list of female singers with male producers: I just discovered Purity Ring and they are fire. Also, the new album Saved from Now, Now has an amazing aesthetic.

I've been listening to almost nothing but Leo Moracchioli (Frog Leap Studios) covers on YouTube for a month now. He does heavy metal covers of all sorts of songs (mostly pop and rock). I'm not normally a metal guy, but I can't stop listening to this dude's stuff.
My current favorites...
August 21st, 2018 at 11:43 PM ^
I've got tickets to see Reignwolf at the shelter and Iron & Wine at the Michigan Theatre. I loved the Iron and Wine with Ben Bridwell album Sing into My Mouth. Reignwolf is a blues rock guy from Canada but lives in Seattle. He doesn't have an album out yet and I've been patiently waiting. I don't know how to embed.
