That's a good looking team!
August 21st, 2018 at 11:06 AM ^
I hope Turner's emergence is for real and not just a camp thing to motivate the other guys. The number of hits on these lower rated guys keeps adding up and really increases the value of the recruiting classes.
August 21st, 2018 at 11:08 AM ^
Turner's tape was very impressive. Still think Tru Wilson (or someone else) will get some looks in pass blocking situations. Can't imagine Turner is the best pass blocking option out of all the competing RB3's
August 21st, 2018 at 11:09 AM ^
I hope samuels gets some carries. If he is truly as fast as his 40 time he ran with a bad hamstring, he could bust games wide open for us in a new spread look.
August 21st, 2018 at 8:27 PM ^
He just got dinged up!
August 21st, 2018 at 9:10 PM ^
Bummer. How badly?
August 22nd, 2018 at 8:06 AM ^
Right arm, soft cast. Out for a bit.
August 21st, 2018 at 11:07 AM ^
umbig11 mentioned on TTB that Will Hart is the likely punter vs ND.
Apparently Robbins has been dinged up.
August 21st, 2018 at 11:22 AM ^
Welp. Let's hope the Ben Herbert effect applies to punter's legs too because neither he nor Robbins looked even decent last year. I'd prefer not to go another whole year with a terrible punter, especially if we end up punting as much as we did last year.
August 21st, 2018 at 11:24 AM ^
I recall being so frustrated during the bowl game vs SC when we were barely hitting 35 yard punts with relatively no hang time. Hopefully, we will be punting less this year will a much more efficient offense.
August 21st, 2018 at 1:26 PM ^
If it's only 35 yards, how much hang time do you need?
August 21st, 2018 at 2:10 PM ^
If it travels only 35 yds, then you need A LOT of hang time, to prevent returns.
Like a pop-up to shallow CF will allow a guy to run all the way to 2nd if the CF drops it, but a line drive is a single.
Like that...
August 21st, 2018 at 11:22 AM ^
Punter dinged up?
August 21st, 2018 at 11:25 AM ^
Could be something like a hamstring, calf injury, rolled his ankle. It happens.
August 21st, 2018 at 11:08 AM ^
I’m surprised Gil was able to hold off Ross. I’m excited to see what him, Singleton, mcgrone, and Anthony have to offer.
August 21st, 2018 at 11:09 AM ^
Really eager to see how Gil looks out there. Don Brown & Co. keep calling him a "Dude", so he has probably came a very long way. Addition of Herbert has helped everyone this off season. He isn't as big as McCray, but I assume he runs a little better.
August 21st, 2018 at 11:19 AM ^
I don’t think it’s a stretch at all to assume every LB we have is a better runner than McCray. He was a good leader and a solid tackler, but my goodness was he ever slow. Blows my mind that we had him covering RBs like Barkley and Dalvin Cook coming out of the backfield.
August 21st, 2018 at 11:52 AM ^
6-1 240 pretty much McCray’s size...it’s been mentioned that Gil really took to the Hebert changes and nutrition and added like 15-20 pounds of lean mass and cutting some excess adipose tissue. If he’s beating out the 2017 lb trio that is a plus sign in my book because all of those guys are really highly thought of
August 21st, 2018 at 2:16 PM ^
Don Brown's Ds are AWESOME, but the Dalvin/Saquon iso's definitely exposed a weak link.
I think that's what crootin the 8-10 Simon/Faustin/Green twins-sized guys is about. Changing up what that back end looks like?
Hope so...?
August 21st, 2018 at 1:30 PM ^
This seems like a good place to ask how authoritative this chart is. It looks right from what I've read except that I haven't seen anything that addresses this position. So, is this what Harbaugh is saying or is it just the OP's best guess?
August 21st, 2018 at 1:42 PM ^
This appears to be what UMBig11 posted in the thread "Apparently Patterson is the starter for ND".
August 22nd, 2018 at 11:53 PM ^
Pretty amazing to think three kids from the same high school will likely be starting on D.
August 21st, 2018 at 11:12 AM ^
How did Collins pass DPJ for a WR 1 spot? Where did you get that info?
August 21st, 2018 at 11:20 AM ^
He didn't. The 1 and 2 indicate the two outside receiver positions. X and Z receivers. It's not Black/Collins/DPJ/Perry.
August 21st, 2018 at 11:20 AM ^
I think that’s more WR1/backup
WR2/ backup.
August 21st, 2018 at 11:22 AM ^
He didn't. Collins is second behind Black for one receiver spot. Perry is second behind DPJ for the other receiver spot.
August 21st, 2018 at 11:54 AM ^
I would think Perry sticks mostly to slot and that Martin would get outside run at x or z first
August 21st, 2018 at 12:07 PM ^
That is how the insiders who've posted depth charts have listed the WR depth so this particularly lineup is the oddball.
August 21st, 2018 at 11:23 AM ^
The formatting choice for this chart is inconsistent. I believe what he is saying is Black is one outside starter with Collins as his backup, and DPJ is the other outside starter with Perry as his backup.
August 21st, 2018 at 11:27 AM ^
Thanks
August 21st, 2018 at 3:02 PM ^
The formatting is somewhere between frustrating and deplorable. Sometimes you use 1,2,3 to rank order, sometimes slashes, but are slashes different from "OR"? Who knows.
August 21st, 2018 at 11:16 AM ^
Offensive tackle, man. Fellas, we're gonna have a bad time.
August 21st, 2018 at 11:22 AM ^
Amazing how you can tell that based on the fact that you haven’t seen the tackles play...
Theyve had an entire spring and fall camp with Warinner where we haven’t seen ANYTHING. All accounts are that the OL is vastly improved.
Maybe we should just wait and see what they look like before determining if we’re going to have a bad time based on what you saw 9-12 months ago.
August 21st, 2018 at 11:23 AM ^
If there's any consolation that's a young group of RT/LT. One could hope that they improve as the season progresses more than say, a 5th year might progress over the course of the season.
August 21st, 2018 at 12:22 PM ^
If the interior guys are actually any good this year and overall communication is better, having less than ideal tackles is something you can work around. Even if they just force a rusher to go the long way around, that's enough to get the ball out if you scheme for it. Teams have been doing it against our DLs for a while now.
August 21st, 2018 at 1:25 PM ^
Remember when everyone shit on the poster who lost his shit when Ulizio was named starter. It turned out that dude was right. Not saying this is the case with JR, but he was right. And so is the guy everyone shits on who calls out the questionable recruiting. Turns out he was right too. How many under the radar types have transferred?
August 21st, 2018 at 3:31 PM ^
How many under the radar types have transferred?
About the same number as the non-under the radar types?
August 22nd, 2018 at 8:47 AM ^
Hudson, Winovich, Metellus, Paye, Gil; Watson= “questionable recruits”; funny how they are all in the two deep of arguably nation’s best defense. Yet, let’s cherry pick, because anecdotes make for sound, valid logic. There’s no oversimplification, at all, there.
August 21st, 2018 at 1:44 PM ^
Offense:
This year
Strengths- 1. Interior OL, 2. RB, 3. TE, 4. QB
Weakness- LT
Last year
Strengths- ?
Weakness- LT, RT, WR
So, except for LT, every category has either moved from a weakness to neutral or from neutral to a strength. Sure it would be great to have a Jake Long type out there are LT and I realize it is an important spot, but unless LT is a black hole of death that drastically brings down the entire offense, it sure seems like there ought to be a marked improvement on that side of the ball.
August 21st, 2018 at 11:24 AM ^
I would change the WRs to maybe X or Z. People are gonna freak out because DPJ is listed at WR 2. Otherwise, this is a great job. Team is loaded with a couple of ?s at OL.
August 21st, 2018 at 12:03 PM ^
OPs can't be edited so this is locked in for eternity!
August 21st, 2018 at 11:25 AM ^
Stay Healthy Boys.
August 21st, 2018 at 11:50 AM ^
Unless Martin doesn't see the field with Shea, someone needs to change their #2 jersey number.
August 21st, 2018 at 12:05 PM ^
If wide receivers are not one of our top 4 strengths then we are in for a very good offense this year.
August 21st, 2018 at 12:08 PM ^
So Hudson beat out JBB at tackle?? Did I miss this news somewhere or is this unvetted info?
August 21st, 2018 at 12:25 PM ^
OP basically copied UMBig11's update here (might have manually navigate to the second page of comments)
August 21st, 2018 at 12:26 PM ^
Both Sam and UMBig11 indicate that is the direction it is headed but not final. Still sounds like a competitive battle.
August 21st, 2018 at 12:13 PM ^
QB is the # 4 strength on offense? Shea Patterson is a former 5 star recruit in his third year of college football. He was leading passer in the SEC prior to his injury last year. I understand that we haven't really seen him yet.....but I'd think that QB would be higher than # 4 (if for no other reason than the upgrade offered over 2017).
In terms of depth, not many teams in the country can match Patterson, Peters, McCaffrey and Milton QB room (and don't forget about Jeff George Jr.!).
August 21st, 2018 at 12:27 PM ^
I'm guessing with interior OL at #1, I'm guessing this isn't a ranked list
August 21st, 2018 at 4:43 PM ^
This is correct, I did not rank the strengths in order. If I did, I would probably go with
1. RB
2. QB
3. TE
4. G C G
5. WR
6. T
