Welcome To MGoBlog 3.0
SORRY, SORRY, TRYING TO REDESIGN IT
Fine, we'll not do the geocities site for the rest of time. I hope you're happy with a background that does not include animated gifs and zero Victors midis in your life, you philistines.
Anyway, this is the New Site. There will inevitably be some hiccups as with any large complicated activity. Please feel free to email or comment about them and we'll look into it. Here is a bolded alter-ego discussion about it.
Why did it take so long?
We missed an aggressive date in August and then I didn't want to upset the apple cart during football season. Then bandwidth got extremely low for us, the MGoBlog half of the equation, with a weird spate of folks being very ill at the same time hockey and basketball went to their respective Final/Frozen Fours. We didn't really pick the project back up until April.
I thought the August date was going to be a miss because this was a bear of a migration from Drupal 6 to Drupal 8 for a site with millions of comments and hundreds of thousands of nodes, poorly maintained by a web coding dilettante (that would be me) and using various Drupal 6 alpha modules that never transitioned to 7, let alone 8. Some functionality was lost. (RIP hellbanning.)
So what are the bells and whistles?
Step one was attempting to replicate current features and port the site to 8. There isn't a ton of new functionality. The main new feature is a responsive design that will work on phones and tablets in addition to PCs. This means we don't need to have specialized apps anymore. The new site is also a long term platform that we can build new stuff into; features on the old site stopped happening because I was perpetually hoping to have a new site in the near future. Now diabolical plans can transpire.
One new thing: comment threads are collapsible, so when that guy who fights with that other guy starts fighting with that guy you can just click the collapse button and move on with your life.
So there are no apps?
The apps were just a mobile-friendly way to view the site and are currently discontinued. If we have functionality we want to add that requires an app they might come back.
I have a problem with this!
Yeah, if you click on "read more" it doesn't take you to where you left off. That is a known issue. Voting is also missing from some article types.
Where's the midi?
You'll have to ask HUEL… er, Human Element about that. Human Element develops websites, usually well and sometimes very very badly but on purpose.
More things that have probably already been mentioned.
- Cannot edit comments
- Comments section doesn't show new/unread comments or indicate number of new/unread comments.
Enhancement suggestions:
- Would be nice to see who started a board post, similar to how the diary poster's name is below the diary topic.
- Put an indicator for the OP in the comments section. If I created a board post then commented later on, it should have an indicator that I am the OP. Many boards/forums do this, including Reddit (among MANY others). I personally like this feature.
Happy the site has launched. Woo. Looks good to me (except for the banner graphic as noted in MGrowOld's comment). Four separate comments:
- Under "Useful Stuff" the Football schedule link is going to Page not found.
- I guess hyperlinks still need to be entered manually as I've seen many addresses that are not hyperlinked in both main article comments and board comments.
- I guess it is a design choice, but having the comment box at the top means after you scroll through comments to see if what you're about to say has already been posted, you have to scroll back to the top to comment.
- Love, love, LOVE the drop arrows to hide all the nested comments. But if you use them, reply to a comment, and go back to the thread, you're "hide" status gets reset.
Well worth the wait!
Woo! Love the new design, hoping this helps growth as well too! Now to get used to the quirks of a new site.
There's no "buy stuff on Amazon" link. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO BUY STUFF ON AMAZON?
my first post on new site!
Thank you for collapsible comment threads! And for everything else.
I would just like to ask what is wrong with being a philistine? This is a sports site. Who cares about the arts ;)
It's probably obvious, and I am pretty dumb, and it's not really that important, but how do I edit my own profile now? Can't seem to find the 'my account' link any more.
Anyone else have all their MGoPoints disappear with the site upgrade?
I very rarely post, but I constantly read (and have for years, a lot longer than my account goes back)... I think you are making a huge mistake getting rid of the App. I avoid mobile web like the plague, I like reading this blogs content in the app, it’s just easier for me... please reconsider your position on this. I’m not saying I will leave, I’m hooked... but it will just make the experience a lot more of a hassle.
this is NOT a complaint, and i know youse guys have a crapload of stuff right now...but i read at work using an rss reader (feedly), and the feed currently includes the comment thread, which dear god make it stop.
also...i don't see any way to edit a post?
the reason i'm asking is because, just as i hit the "post me" button i realized i hadn't offered my laurel and hearty handshake for all the work. it looks great!
Is it just me or does the back button for web browsers not return you to the previous mgoblog page? I seem to have to reopen blog posts each time from the top toolbar.
I'm pretty addicted to this site. I'm so glad it's back.
Much Congrats!! Site looks great! Big undertaking. I’ve worked on launching IT systems and they can be not fun .... and that is after they go live.
Created my account after a decade+ of lurking to congratulate ya'll on the upgrade. Proud of you guys!
YES! Can't wait to explore everything.
Thank you, but please either put in an option for DARK MODE or go away from the ghastly white background.
Please, please bring back the MGoBlog app. It makes navigating to/within the MGoBoard content so much easier/faster from my phone than the mobile website does. Since the MGoBoard is where most of the rich content resides (especially on the weekends), this is an important usability feature.
Yes! Mobile apps are a better experience than mobile websites. That's why we have all these apps for Facebook, Twitter, email, etc.
Nice job guys!

Thumbs up to all of it. The lighter theme is going to take some getting used to though.
Can we no longer go to our account in order to find previous posts? That was a convenient way to see if anyone replied to your comment. Is that no longer a thing?
I have not seen a way other than to find an old post or make an impromptu one and click on your name (like I am doing now).
Then you can see them.
Noice!
Ok I will get used to this.
Ok I will get used to this.

If your words had the power of truth they could withstand ComicSans.
I actually made a couple websites in 1998 written entirely in comicSans and I proudly claim a contribution to the anti comicSans movement!
That's just wrong.
Thanks to me it is :)
I'll miss the app, but OK, I am getting used to the new look. Took me a few days to learn to empty the browser cache...
long-time reader but first time poster- just want to say the new site looks great! It was worth the wait :)
You had me scared for a brief moment with the 90s flashback site. As someone whose been legally blind for a while, I literally couldn't read anything. But that was pretty funny.
Anyway, I look forward to continuing to see the site's great analysis and commentary in the new format - nice work!
I don't understand this computer stuff. In google I kept getting the animated version of the Fab-5 picture above. What worked for me was the combination of updating google and erasing my browser history if anyone is having the same issue. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm having all sorts of issues..works ok on my phone but on my laptop only the opening page loads and nothing else..won't work...not a fan so far..miss the topics all on the right...seems more work to maneuver thru the site
So, it appears that the site has been up since sometime 6/5, but i was unable to access until just now 6/7. All I was able to see was the fab 5 and a hello post. Did I miss something?
Hallo. Iam neww hear. Show bewbs?
I was stuck on the “Welcome to the new site” page for 3 days. I have already forgotten what the old site looked like.
I loved the troll site. That was a nice touch. So far the new site seems like a sizable improvement. Thanks for all the hard work mgoblog team and good job HUEL!

Welcome back, your dreams were your ticket out...
I resent the implication that the midi site was bad.
I felt like like I had been transformed back to 1992, sitting at NUBS and making my website. I thought it was awesome
Just deleted my Mgoblog app. End of an era
~ RIP Herm
Looks great thus far, Ace.
I'll admit, I didn't like the beta.
Then I realized that there is no need for an app. That changes everything. Well done.
I had surgery just prior to the change and was off the net for about 3 weeks. I had no idea what was going on. Duh! Damn glad you're back! I'm sure things will get sorted out.
