Are there anymore coaching changes at Michigan? (Football)
There have been rumors of multiple changes, some saying up to 3-4 assistants.
It sounds like Mallory didn't get that head coaching job and now we know Borges is gone and Nussmeier is in. Are there anymore changes that anyone is hearing anything about? Anymore speculation? Anymore suggestions?

If Michigan can manage to grab Mario Cristobal for the OL coach, that would be a huge recruiting coup. MC was the mastermind behind Rutgers recruiting success under Greg Schiano and he recrutied both TY Hilton and Jonathan Cyprian (Jacskonville Jaguars starting safety) to little known FIU. He has huge huge ties to South Florida and is regarded as a masterful recruiter. Previously was head coach at FIU.

I'd like to see them bring in Wheatley as an RB coach and groom him to become the next OC. If he does in fact turn the Michigan offense around, Nuss will be the first Michigan coordinator in a really long time to get serious head coaching looks. And something like that should happen within 2-3 seasons. Having someone like Wheatley in house -- assuming he knows what he's doing -- that can step in and up into an OC role would be a big plus.
As far as Soup...there's got to be something negative with him that no one outside of coaching circles knows about. You just don't fall off the face of the CFB world like that without being blacklisted.

I hear James Franklin could be in the mix and was offered the job today.
EDIT: I edited the comment after deleting what I wrote because I realized I'm stupid. I really wanted to put Funk, but since I knew everyone else was going to say Funk, I decide to go off the unbeaten path.

Wow. I guess i't no surprise you have the CMU emblem as your avatar.

Well, like I said it was a joke..it was a dumb joke indeed. There's no need to insult me or the school I go to.

Some of the Baltimore Ravens blogs are reporting that Andy Moeller's job as assistant OL coach may be in jeopardy with today's appointment of Juan Castillo as the OL coach. I wonder if Moeller would consider coming back to Michigan where he coached OL from 2000 to 2007.
"What this meant for Andy Moeller, who has held the title of offensive line coach, remained to be seen. The most likely scenario is that Moeller will not return."
Maybe someone can embed the quote properly. Here is the link.

Issues with alcohol related instances. Was previously arrested for his third DUI related instance in four years, thus his demotion to assistant offensive line coach. Not sure if Michigan wants someone like that around in the development of their young athletes.

Good point about the DUI issues and the influence on the students. His father was known to down a few, which ultimately got him axed back in the day. Here is a fluff news piece suggesting that he has cleaned up his act. Take it for what it is worth.

I'd always heard that Gary Moeller wasn't a drinker, but he did drink up that one fateful night and boy did it cost him.

I've heard the same, SN.

My (uncomfirmed) actions with the current head football coach at LSU led to Gary's excessive drinking.

can you shed any light on the other 'uncomfirmed' issue with this blog, the 5 young ladies of the night who allegedly died at the hands of one ex-football player/announcer?

they say his name rhymes with Craig James....and if you can get your little orphan Annie secret decoder pin out and use it on the following messgae, you'll see why we ask:
He may have killed five hookers stop
Once decoded, please fill us in.

Completely and totally wrong. In fact, as everybody from Bo on down said, Gary Moeller was NOT a drinker.

...which would actually help explain pretty well why his brief foray into drinking that night ended in the manner which it did.

I hear that Doug wants a few of his guys to come to Michigan. No idea where an opening would come from.

Usually coordinators want to bring in some of their own guys to run their system. Not sure if that is the case in this situation, but in general it seems like it plays of that way.
January 9th, 2014 at 3:09 AM ^
There is a difference between "I hear he wants to do this" and "usually coodinators want to do this."

despite how often it's been repeated here as a criticism of RR. I do expect some further changes and Nussmeier should have a lot of say in the replacements, but I think the same assistants would be leaving regardless of who the OC was going to be.
If the new OC at Bama wants to bring in his own guys, great. I'd love to at least snag Cristobal. I'll be very, very surprised if that happens though. When Nussmeier was hired, Alabama replaced zero assistants. When Cam Cameron was hired, LSU replaced zero assistants. When Jim Bollman was hired, zero. Ultimately, assistant coaches work for the head coach, not the coordinators, and the loyalty lies there.

Pretty common with new OC's, especially high profile ones such as Nussmeier.

I'd be surprised if both Funk and Jackson came back, and maybe both will be gone. Let Nussheier have input if not flat out pick the replacement(s).
I don't know that Mallory has been told anything about the Eastern Illinois job. It's still vacant. That he interviewed almost makes me wonder if Hoke is close to convincing his brother to join our staff.

Go back and watch any DB play aside from Jordan Kovacs from 2008-2010. Then see if you're singing the same tune. Raymon and Blake were both pretty great till both got relatively torched by an All-American in a who cares bowl game

Mallory has been making DBs better since he got here. Keep that guy.

open to change, depending on approval by Nussmeier.
That being said, here are my thoughts on a few coaches:
- Funk is almost certainly gone for obvious reasons. When the offensive line is that bad in any single year, the coach should be fired.
- Jackson will "retire." We haven't had an effective RB since Hart. His only reprieve would be his recruiting prowess which the staff may deem valuable enough to be reason to retain him.
- Wellman might be out. The team was clearly weaker and smaller than it should have been.
- Mallory is looking to leave too, so I figure he'll leave once he gets a job somewhere else.
- Maybe Ferrigno? The punt formation has been terrible but I see that more as being done under Hoke's direction. The tight end situation hasn't been great but it hasn't terrible either. I guess it depends on who Nussmeier wants to bring with him.
- I don't really see any other changes beyond that. Hecklinski has been great and I don't know much about LB play but it seemed like youth has been the big problem on defense and Manning has only been there for a season so I don't see him or Smith being let go.

weaker and smaller because they were all sophomores

You know there are sometimes real reasons for things to not go well? It's not always an excuse. And there are often multiple reasons why things don't go well. The team was young. Fact.

I think you two are arguing past each other. The "small and weak" topic was in relation to S&C, not offensive performance.
