Personally, despite the current talent on their roster, if you look at history I would view the Lions as a large downgrade from Notre Dame.  Why would Kelly make that move unless he felt like his job was in danger in South Bend?

False. Completely false. The Lions have historically been a bad program but they have all the pieces ready to kick some ass. They just need someone to give them the push to get over that proverbial hump.

Kelly could go to the pros and fail and still get a good college job if he went back. If he does average he could get an elite job immediately after returning to college.

Name me the last Lions coach to fail and then ever be a head coach again at any level?

As far as I can tell, it's Bobby Ross, who went 9-25 in 3 years at Army after being canned by the Lions.  Dick Jauron doesn't count as he was an interim coach for just 5 games.

The Lions are a coaching GRAVEYARD.  It's where you go to have your career destroyed.  Anyone who already has a good gig (like Kelly) would be crazy to give it up to go to the Lions IMO.

Notre Dame is a very high-profile job. That doesn't always mean it is a "good" job.

You could certainly argue he is a bad personality fit for them. Recruiting will always be a chore there now.

I think Kelly is a forward-thinking guy who probably is not terribly sentimental about ND and would like a crack at the pros. Really, it's the Lions who have to make the call on him. Is he too big of a jerk or just enough of one to make a good difference? It's their decision to make as I'd be surprised to see Kelly turn the postion down.

ND is a good job, but not as good as it should be, why?  Same reason as we aren't as good of a job, the donors and administration meddle way too much in the football program.

As far as recruiting?  ND has outrecruited us in 3 out of the last 4 years, kids will always want to go to ND, just as they will always want to come here.

While this is true, nobody the Lions have hired (save Bobby Ross, who is the exception and was old enough to actually retire from coaching when he quit) has the background Kelly does. If he goes 20-28 over three seasons, he'll be able to walk into an Iowa level coaching position on the strength of the 2012 season alone.

1.  did you watch this year's death spiral?  that is the norm---not an aberration

2, the Lions has often demonstrated an ability to lose even when comprised of good players

3.  relatively few people on this board  were born the last time the Lions played a  meaningfully game---circa 1957.

This is the one of the few things right now I will say in defense of Hoke. When Hoke says he wants to stay here for the rest of his career, and there is no job that he'd rather have, I sincerely believe him.

He loves this place more than just about all of us on this board, and I know he's the kind of guy who's loyalty can't be bought.

Sadly, though, it might be his loyalty to his staff that'll be his own undoing.

Do they want him out of South Bend? I don't know why you'd say "Someone else is trying to steal the head coach who took us to the brink of a national title for the first time in 25 years. Yeah!"

That dude would be last on my list. I don't know what, if anything, about his college tenure qualifies him to lead an NFL team deep into the playoffs. I mean we're almost irate about Michigans performances yet we still manage to handle ND regularly.

We handle ND head-to-head, which is starting to look like an anamoly. In terms of having better seasons than them, we haven't been successful often in recent years.

There's also something to be for getting to that big game once, which we never did in the BCS era. I think Kelly beats the pants off every other post-Holtz coach there.

Brian Kelly has won and won a lot every where he's been. This table is going to come through ugly but the point stands. He turned GVSU into the national power it is now. He made Central good, he made Cincinnati great, and he's doing well at ND so far. Brian Kelly wins a lot

I want an established pro coach, but I guess Kelly is at least an innovator. Though if he tells at Suh like he did in college he's going to wind up in Beaumont.

No, no, no.  Neither of them.  Except for very rare cases, NFL coaching is a young man's game and bringing back the older coach with the big resume (and corresponding ego) rarely works.

Brian Kelly is an outstanding college coach but I've seen nothing that leads me to believe he'd succeed in the NFL.  The biggest issue with Schwartz (probably the best Lions coach of the past 50 years, but still deserved to lose his job) was his inability to control his emotions or that of his team, I doubt that would improve under Kelly.

There are NINE former head coaches of the Lions since 1963 who have better career winning percentages than Schwartz's .377. If you include Gary Moeller, it's TEN.

On that list is George Wilson, who was HC from 1957-64, and who led the Lions to their last World Championship in '57.

Was Schwartz the worst? Not by a long shot, but to say he was the best is one of the most ridiculous things I've read on MGoBlog in a long time.
