02/08/2016 - 4:22pm I am young, you caught

I am young, you caught me.

I'm not trying to lecture you (if it came off that way, it was unintended).

I get that wins matter, but I believe Beilein is a very good coach (and one that is great for Michigan) and I don't think the last 2 years are a strong enough sample size to make me change my opinion. That's my analysis in a nutshell.

The blog seems to disagree, whether it be my age or arguments (or both). It happens.

I am sorry if the blog did not enjoy my portion of the discussion. It has in the past, but that's neither here nor there. I will just move on with my day.

02/08/2016 - 4:00pm It's just an example to show

It's just an example to show other coaches have had periods of slumps after periods of success and that a dramatic shift of opinion in their abilities is not wise.

02/08/2016 - 3:40pm Two seasons though.
TWO. One

Two seasons though.

TWO. One and a half really. With injury trouble! That's a horrible sample size to evaluate a coach.

Billy Donovan won back to back titles and then went to the NIT two years in a row. Did he suddenly become a bad coach during that stretch?

Changing an opinion of a coach that quickly is too reactionary.

02/08/2016 - 3:35pm RR failed and was fired

RR failed and was fired because he was a bad fit. Beilein is a good fit and has had success, so I don't see comparison there. Respect is just a factor I believe should be included in evaluation (akin to scouting in baseball).

And if missing the tourney 2 years in a row is such a crime, why did Tommy Amaker get 6 years?

02/08/2016 - 3:25pm Funny, I just pulled up the

Funny, I just pulled up the old "Has Beilein passed Izzo" thread for laughs and you thought Beilein was a hall of famer "guaranteed" and you'd take him over Izzo.

It is insane how much the opinion of this man has changed over 2 years.

02/08/2016 - 3:16pm Yes I did. Because I trust

Yes I did. Because I trust coaches more than I trust mgoblog posters to know what coaching talent is.

You can make whatever analysis you want, but I'm gonna trust the opinions and analysis over other coaches over yours and any other poster's. I think they might know a thing or two more about basketball.

And you completely ignored my argument about why his record is the way it is. Your record is gonna look like that when turning programs around. It takes time. There's more to coaching evaluation than W/L.

02/08/2016 - 2:46pm Beilein has some flaws =/=

Beilein has some flaws =/= Beilein can't coach

Beilein has done some great things at Michigan and this year's offense is still at #16 on kenpom. Fran McCaffery (of the first place Hawkeyes) called him "one of the greatest coaches of our generation."

The defense and recruiting have been frustrating, but knows what he's doing. The other coaches know that. Lots of smart people in basketball know that.

I'm not sure why this fanbase doesn't know that.

02/08/2016 - 2:04pm Nothing suggests he's more

Nothing suggests he's more than solid, really?

How about being respected among his peers? Being voted one of the best offensive coaches in the country? Fellow coaches rave about Beilein.

How aboug going to many different programs that have had no history of success and then laying a foundation of winning? Taking 4 different schools to the NCAA tournament? Winning everywhere he's been?

He doesn't have a spotless W/L record because he took a strange route to get where he is today. Turning around those types of programs doesn't happen overnight and it leaves you with some bad looking W/L records.

And then come on. "Solid" coaches don't win conference championships and a final four in a 3 year stretch.

I get that people are frustrated with the basketball team, but come on. Let's not act like Beilein can't coach.

The original topic was on 4 star, #65 247 compositie, Mr. Ohio Basketball front-runner Xavier Simpson.

This seems like a very weird place to complain about recruiting.

12/24/2015 - 11:50am Only 1 of those is on the

Only 1 of those is on the road (@ Minnesota). Penn State is home and neutral court game.

@Ilinois, and Indiana, Northwestern, and Iowa at home are very winnable games. Could be favored in all of them.

@Ohio State and @Wisconsin can be done. They've lost to teams not nearly as good as Michigan on those courts.

12/24/2015 - 11:30am Penn State, Rutgers, and

Penn State, Rutgers, and Minnesota are very bad teams. They play them 5 times.

You can't find 3 more wins on the schedule?

You're underrating this team.

12/09/2015 - 1:26am It really isn't

It really isn't though.

McGary scored points because he could shoot. JMo couldn't shoot so he contributed in other ways. Beilein does not need a 5 who puts up double digit PPG to win.

His lack of scoring points didn't stop them from getting a B1G title outright 2 years ago. Or from getting to the Elite 8 (and damn near another Final 4).

If you think JMo mediocre at best because of PPG, I don't know what to tell you.

12/09/2015 - 1:02am Freshman McGary was on a

Freshman McGary was on a tear. Of course he was gonna start.

You said they were all awful. JMo was far from awful.

He made an all-defensive team. Was good on the glass and took charges like a champ.

Say what you want about Doyle and Donnal, but Beilein and co. did a good job with 2/3 star JMo.

And points per game? It's a guard-oriented system. His job really isn't to score a bunch of points. He's there to set screens, play defense, take charges, and if they leave him alone, he'll dunk it down. He did his job.

12/09/2015 - 12:48am And he was excellent for

And he was excellent for Michigan.

What's your point?

07/02/2015 - 12:10am Yeah I'm with you.
The Sixers

Yeah I'm with you.

The Sixers are getting a lot of heat, but at least they have a long term plan: Stink for now to get top draft picks. Eventually (assuming the prospects don't all bust), they'll have a lot of young, cheap talent to win with. They aren't gonna stink forever.

I'm happy if I'm Nik too. The Kings weren't really using him and he'll have a chance to play in Philly.

06/26/2015 - 1:35pm So when Saban and Urban do

So when Saban and Urban do something like this, we call it "dirty" and "classless", but when Harbaugh does it, now it's the "business of winning".

Got it.

05/11/2015 - 2:39pm Will this please, ONCE AND

Will this please, ONCE AND FOR ALL, put an end to the silly "Beilein can't recruit" narrative.

Just stop spewing that nonsense.

It's Mississippi State. He has the #1 team at Mississippi State. That is really hard to do.

Since I was born, Miss St. has had 9 or more wins TWICE. Dan Mullen has 1 of them (and barring a collapse, he'll have another this year).

A 60% career win percentage is different at Miss St than it is at a powerhouse. Considering his resources and recruiting, it's quite impressive what he's done.

10/03/2014 - 5:10pm All fair points.
I just wish

All fair points.

I just wish he'd do more though. Like bringing in another lefty to compete with Phil Coke in spring training. Perhaps instead of spending big on a few guys, spread it out. Sort of like what he did with SS this year, threw a bunch of guys at the wall and went with what stuck.

Maybe could have made a move for Andrew Miller too, but hard to know what they were asking for.

I've probably come off a lot stronger than I wanted too. Dombrowski is one of the best. Just wish he'd try something different for the bullpen.

10/03/2014 - 4:50pm It's about a 30 batter swing

It's about a 30 batter swing of lefties Nathan has had to face more of.

That said, when you split it, per wOBA against, Al Al is better against both lefties and righties than Joe Nathan is.

A 10 inning postseason sample size would not scare me away from using one of the Tigers' better (that's not saying much) RP in Alburquerque in a higher leverage situations.

10/03/2014 - 4:44pm The Tigers are still built

The Tigers are still built pretty well to win next year with some moves

OF JD Martinez

OF Rajai/Platoon Partner (Healthy Dirks?)

OF?

1B Miggy

2B Kinsler

SS Iglesias

3B Nick C

C Avila/McCann

SP Verlander, Price, Porcello, Sanchez, Lobstein or Ray

Bullpen PILE OF FIRE AND SEWAGE

Rotation could be fine if they are willing to roll with Lobstein or Ray. Need an OF. Yasmani Tomas? A CF? (The market for CF is weak). Also need bullpen pieces. Plus, can always trade to move pieces around.

Right moves and the Tigers can compete again next year.

10/03/2014 - 4:33pm There are some BABIP and

There are some BABIP and strand rate luck arguments you could make for Al Al, but basically, across the board, his nubmers have been better.

You can take experience. I'll take the guy with the numbers.

He signed a 39 year old closer and brought in Joba Chamberlain, who stunk for years.

That was never gonna be enough to fix all of the bullpen issues. This collapse really isn't shocking.

Ausmus has been

Bingo.

Ausmus has been making horrible decisions all year (most notably, keeping Joe Nathan as closer but there are many more).

That said, bullpen is on Dombrowski. He's had years to fix it, but it still sinks every year. Love Dave, but it's on him.
