is Michigan now Notre Dame under Charlie Weis?

Submitted by newfoundhbomb on

hey guys Dan Wetzel tweeted this after the game.  right now i would have to agree.  Hoke says all the right things, can get a decent amount of good recruits, but the games are awful.  what do you think?

The more you watch Michigan the more it reminds of Charlie Weis Notre Dame. Big recruits, big talk, not good football

What would you have them change that they have not already tried?  Easy to say nothing changes, but maybe that is because you have who you have on the offensive line and at QB, and at WR too, and all you can do is try to continue to teach them and grow them at this point.  We are getting beat up on the offensive line, and no amount of coaching or play calling is going to fix that.  Now, he could fire Borges, but that accomplishes nothing at this point, and what plays or offense can be instituted at this point of this season beyond trying to simplify things for the offensive line.

I get being frustrated, and I get saying fix things, but I am saying this year and this offensive line may be beyond fixing and that Akron and UConn and now MSU, Nebraska, and Iowa have shown us that issue in spades.

I live in Canada, so I'd have to pay a lot of money to watch every game on my TV. When Michigan is good, I'm sad that I live in Canada, but when they're this bad I'm so grateful that I didn't have the option of wasting three hours watching the unwatchable. I went to the Indiana game and saw more offense than Michigan's put up in the last month. As for the Weis comparisons, Michigan's schedule is easier, their defense is better, and Hoke seems like a more humble guy.

Weiss had no, repeat not one second, head coaching experience and it showed.  The over reaction to 2013 is matching the over reaction to 2011.  The 2011 meme was that Hoke and Mattison and Borges are Michigan saving Gods, the 2013 meme is that they are all three idiots who should be fired.  The guys who knew how to coach in 2011 are now guys who can't spot or develop talent.  Obvious that our QB is a broken man from too many hits and too many turnovers and that our offensive line and our running backs are no where near historical Michigan standards.  Boys, we are just going to have to wait this out.

I have faith in this staff (maybe except Borges) because of something I experienced years ago. I was an athletic trainer at a IAA school. We were two years removed from a senior laden conference championship team. All those players left and we were now a team with 54 true and redshirt freshmen. Our first staff meeting, the HC ended it by saying be patient and be prepared for a bad year. Just not going to be pretty. We ended up 2-9. Fast forward 3 years and those young guys matured and grew up to win the national championship.
Michigan is young and I believe has the potential to grow up and do great things. In the meantime, have patience and support the maize and blue.

Not sure yet....ND always has monster recruiting classes and we are living through the last of our 4 year recruiting dip. If Hoke can keep this next class alive and doesn't suffer mass attrition, then we'll be able to tell. If he can't win with his 4* & 5* guys, then yes, we are ND.

The dip is in your perception.  UM's recruiting classes the past 7 years are averaged higher than Oregon.  MSU has never had a recruiting class in that time as good as UM's.  The "dip in recruiting" is versus Alabama or Texas.... they recruit plenty good enough to not put this garbage product on the field.  Do you think there is a tangible difference from averaging the 9th best class over the past 10 years versus the 14th? Cmon now.

Look, I'm obviously not happy with the way our season has turned out - but all you chicken littles calling for the coaches head need to back off. It takes time to build depth and the type of team that Hoke is going to build. The "highly ranked recruits" that we all talk about are only Sophomores at best, in a sport where redshirt Sophomores at the earliest should really even see the field.

Look, I'm the last person to be happy with what we're seeing - but give it time. This is a mediocre season. It's his third year, which is the toughest to suceed in for a new coach. Bielien's third season saw a 15-17 record, and at the time I remember telling my friends about how he needed to go - how'd that work out? He brought us to a Big Ten Championship the year after and then a Final Four the one after that. The team is looking solid this year and it's pretty apparent that our BBall Program is re-established.

It sucks to see OSU and MSU do so well - but let's give our staff time, they will get us to a Big Ten Championship and a Rose Bowl soon enough. Heck, I remember after Mark Dantonio's third season at MSU (a 6-7 Campaign, I might add,) my MSU friends were calling for his head and saying the needed to "FIRE NARDUZZI." How'd that work out? Urban will take a step back next year - he was the recipient of a strong roster and a good schedule the past two years. Don't want to take anything away from him since he hasn't lost a game, but it is what it is.

Give these guys time - we have a ton of depth returning next year. The team WILL be very good next year. 2014 and 2015 will be telling, but I fully expect to win a Big Ten Championship in one of the two, or both - and compete in both years.

Let's not lose patience guys.........his best recruiting classes were his 2nd and 3rd, and they are only Freshmen and Sophomores.

I was with you until you started to downplay what Urban has done at OSU. I agree that Hoke needs time to turn things around, but I've seen no indication that he's anywhere near Urban's level as a coach. We're deluding ourselves if we think that Ohio State is not coached by one of the two or three best coaches in the country. Right now, it looks like the gap between Michigan and Ohio State will only grow larger. And that thought is depressing.

Would we have been better off had we lost to Akron and/or Uconn?  If we were 5-6 right now going into the game with Ohio, Hoke would likely be gone after the season, he'll get 2014 for sure IMO.

If I were HC, I would have sat Mattison down during the bye week and had him study the Michigan offense as if he was going to have a game against Michigan next week....and then have him explain to Borges all the ways the offense is failing and tipping plays.

Maybe they did do that and it still didn't help

...that football is the ultimate team sport...and it takes everyone doing their part to make it work right.

I'd say there are a lot of individual "fails", this season has been a collection of negative yardage plays, and busted plays like I've not seen before.  The defense can play tighter, the offensive line has to at least beat the defensive line to a draw.

Iowa has a solid team.  Not great, but greater than us today.  The stat that the teams they have lost to, have a combined total of 3 losses, and that they played each of those close. was very telling for me, to underscore their solidity.  That they blew our entire defensive line 2 yards off the line of scrimmage when we pinned them down at the 2 yard line on an obvious run play says they have a nice offensive line.

I'm very meh about the short rest of the season, but I recognize the value that can come between ohio and a bowl game...a LOT of practice, and time to recover from injuries.

In my mind we are still in development.  Until this staff develops their own senior class (and not the 11 day class that Hoke had to put together as he was hired) the jury will be still out for me.  That's going to take some time.

Besides, Urban Meijer is going to be coaching at USC or Texas next year.  And one of Narduzzi or Luke Fickell is going to be a head coach somewhere else.  Mark it down.  Ohio is at their peak if you ask me, and southern california is far greater than the misery of columbus.  Narduzzi has also peaked with his giant class of seniors.  Time to take some profits from all of their past hard work.

So are we Weis, I don't think so.  He was heralded as a "genius from the NFL" to quote one of my good buddies.  At the same time, the 6 year review will be the day of reckoning.

NEWSFLASH - Nebraska, in overtime at Penn State, played conservatively offensively to set up a field goal. Kick was good, they won.

no. at this point, the M and MSU program have completely swapped roles. we are the team that somehow beats ND, struggles with UCONN/AKRON, gets to the meat of the schedule vs MSU and the B10, and hilariously folds like a broken lawn chair. We are the team heading down to the toilet bowl, they are going to their 2nd B10 title game. they are the team on ESPN at noon we are pushed to BTN. We have a coordinator who is the laughing stock of the sport. they clinched a division and a NYD bowl.

for years, I wondered what is was like to be an MSU fan- watching complete and utter ineptness every week while the instate rival competes for B10 titles. Thanks Brady, now I know.

the result is, like so many others, I don't even watch the games anymore. I have better things to do than watch this team lock up 158 yards of offense against Iowa, piss away the PSU game, and on and on and on. I had my fill in person against Uconn. and on TV against AKRON and on and on and on and on. god forbid a team actually gets better as the season goes on.

people also need to STOP saying we're a hairs width from 10-1. WE ARE NOT EVEN CLOSE. THIS IS A BAD FOOTBALL TEAM WHO SQUEED OUT WINS AGAINST:

-AKRON

-UCONN

- NW (so incredibly luckey to get that kick off).

we lost to bad teams PSU, Neb and Iowa. Waxed against MSU.

Yes, it's a young team, but failure of this scale on offense requires failure in all aspects of the team: coaching, talent devlopment, execution, recruiting. Not to mention, this is also the WORST conference in the country. mostly b.c no one in teh B10 can recruit/develope a decent QB. crist, I can't name the UGa QB and he's like the 3rd best QB int eh conference and will get drafted. sad state of affiars int eh B10 all around: OSU will go 25-0 and not be int eh MNC game.

If you can't develop talent, recruiting is somwhat of a waste.  I feel bad for these kids that are buying into this hype machine.  It ends in failure......every year......for the last 10 years.
