and yet we're 3-3 in the shitty big 10 with all those amazing recruiting classes and success just 2 years ago.......

Overreact much?
Holy shit dude. We score NINE points on a winless-in-the-BIG Northwestern team. NINE
November 16th, 2013 at 10:34 PM ^
I think we scored more than that, and we WON, on the road, in the rain, and to a team that many had slated to beat us before the season even started. Wasn't pretty, but a WIN is a WIN.

We didn't see the 20+ down wasters today.
However, that doesn't erase the 20+ down-wasters we saw against PSU, MSU,and Nebraska. Al Jeykl-and-Hyde Borges hurts the team on his too-frequent off-days.
November 17th, 2013 at 10:05 AM ^
i saw about 10 down wasters once we got to the NW 10 yd line. i thought borges called a decent game until we got to the red zone. i was harping on this all game "throw the damn ball in the endzone". he tried it just one time in regulation. then just one time in OT (the butt TD).

Borges and Funk should be fired. And Fred Jackson can "retire" with a little bit of dignity.
November 16th, 2013 at 7:31 PM ^
I think we are winning in spite of the offensive coaching staff. It seemed when Devin improvised, the team was most successful.
November 16th, 2013 at 7:33 PM ^
Completely agree. If we have even a semi-competent OC, we probably only have one loss at this point and are beating everyone comfortably. Our offense is complete garbage.
November 16th, 2013 at 7:31 PM ^
Give Mattison a raise, and fire Borges immediately. He almost lost another game for us, and I hope that isn't lost in the fact that Michigan got the W. Either way, great finish to a bad game, Go Blue!!!

the PSU and Nebraska games. That is already 2, too many....

Coaches deserve props for that. Then again, that might have been the game winning FG if we kick the tying field goal five minutes earlier.
Not bad considering another monsoon game versus Northwestern.
November 16th, 2013 at 7:50 PM ^
Then again, that might have been the game winning FG if we kick the tying field goal five minutes earlier.
If we'd tied it up with 5:00, Northwestern would have approached the next possession completely differently. They also would have gotten a kickoff instead of taking over at their 4-yard line.
You can't assume we'd have gotten the ball back with the score tied.
November 16th, 2013 at 8:12 PM ^
That's why I kick the FG. You can't assume we'd get the ball back that late and our 2-minute offense was abysmal last week, so go for the sure thing chip shot FG and trust the D that was good all game long.
Besides, NW moved the ball out to the 30 It's not as if they just ran into a stacked line three times and punted. They ran their regular offense. They moved the ball pretty well, converting two first downs, and fortunately we were able to make one big play. They were three yards short of converting one more time and being able to run out the clock. Huge gamble by the staff and the defense bailed them out.

Fitz no longer starting. Green/Smith are both much better, and for better or worse, are the future. My guess is for the better. So, a coach had to decide that.
Playcallilng continues to suck pretty hard.
November 16th, 2013 at 7:32 PM ^
and executing that field goal was incredible

November 16th, 2013 at 7:36 PM ^
So you're disregarding the last several weeks of offensive playcalling over a few dropped balls? Even if they make these plays you speak of, Borges would still find a way to stall the offense a few plays later.

While I'd love to think that the light finally came back on in ot (DG, borges, you name it), unfortunately I think it's mostly because NW stopped blitzing. The loss is squarely on fitzgerald here...

Crap...I hope this didn't save Borges' job. The kids won this one, certainly not the coaching staff.

but I'll take it. How can it be 9-9 and then everything is unleashed in OT? Well, it helps that NW did not want to intercept ANY balls today. Either way, I'm happy for the sanity of MGOBLOG and that I will never have to see those atrocious unis again. My eyes are burning. No, wait, that was the mirror. No, let's stick with the uniforms.

but we were first and goal from the 10 after the "punt" and got -2 yards.
November 16th, 2013 at 8:55 PM ^
this whole thread, and no one mentioned it until now. That was absolutely ridiculous. And that is why more than anything Borges needs to go. . .
November 16th, 2013 at 9:43 PM ^
until overtime. Just very strange play calling. Maybe something is wrong with Al Borges?
November 17th, 2013 at 10:13 AM ^
what was unleased in OT?? we threw just one pass in the endzone in all of the OTs combined (the butt TD). we threw one pass in the endzone (incomplete gallon fade) the entire regulation. redzone playcalling was just mindboggling to me. DG made some plays with his legs in OT.. there was no unleashing of the offense, imo.
November 17th, 2013 at 10:18 AM ^
i just remembered another pass to gallon in the endzone in OT just off his hands on a post. so 2 attempts at a TD in OT.

HORRIBLE coaching to go for it on 4th and not have tried a fade on 3rd. It was like Hoke and Borges made the decision after the failed 3d down.
Fine, be aggressive and go for the TD, but holy crap that whole sequence was bad.

Execution on similar play calls. Plus, Gardner made that same play many times before. OT last year against NW IIRC. Coaches expect this kids to execute when they call a play.

Know what - Fuck it. We won. I'm gonna worry about coaching, o line play, etc later. Tonight I'm going to watch football and drink beer and be happy.
