META: Verboten topics

Submitted by BiSB on

As a periodic reminder, there are a few topics that are never cool, even if they seem relevant. A brief list:

  • Politics
  • Anything by Ace Williams or ChatSports
  • Bleacher Report (with the occasional, NARROW exception for some of their lead writers)
  • Drew Sharp
  • Mike Valenti
  • Anyone buying or selling tickets (use the ticket spreadsheet)
  • Anyone looking for a Michigan bar: too many cities, not enough MGoBoard.
  • Politics
  • Religion
  • Politics

Jason Whitlock is veeeeeeeery close to joining that list.

I prefer my sports radio personalities to be level-headed. And halfway intelligent.

That would be an interesting discussion ... sports radio personalities we like and why.

Trouble is, there's no way to fence that so it stays "like" and not degenerate into "sports radio personalities I hate and here's a 3000 word epic rant on the topic."

At some point in time I really should do work my employer pays me to do.

"At some point in time I really should do work my employer pays me to do."

By even signing up to do the work you are already far more responsible than most of the people in this country (no polo). Well done, sir. WELL DONE!

Tread lightly to (re)start your MGoJourney here. The rules are for everyone's safety and sanity. They are also based on solid board research too, as many longtime MGoUser would agree, I am sure. I mean, for some of the listed people / topics, the reasons should be fairly evident anyway.

And really? I was expecting some earth shattering bs from it, but all I can see is that the Michigan fan base represents his image of the team: soft. Just because you guys don't agree with what he says doesn't mean you can all flip a shit about it. He was composed in his writing and handled his viewpoints maturely. I don't necessarily agree with 100% of everything, but the article does bring in a different and constructive view of this team. Really it's not that bad, grow up.

In general, the rules on verboten topics make sense. There is one occasional exception, in my mind, which I vaguely recollect seeing every now and then. That exception is when a current or alumni member of the staff or team is involved in a non-offensive way with something that is political or religious. Here are some examples:

  • Jon Runyan not running again for Congress.
  • Craig Roh going on a religious service trip over Spring Break.
  • Dave Brandon possibly running for Governor of Michigan.
  • Gerald Ford & Willis Ford standing up against racism (movie Black & Blue.)
  • USS Aircraft Carrier Gerald Ford being christened.
  • Brock Mealer and faith issues.
  • Elliot Mealer and faith issues.

Generally, both athletes and coaches keep personal religious and political views personal. This is seen as a good thing. But there are times when personal faith and politics intersect with public life. At the very least, I don't think it is a bad thing to put up links to legitimate articles covering faith and politics when it informs and shapes the life of athletes in a public way. This is one of those things where there needs to be the liberal use of discretion.

Bill Simonson on "the Huge Show" - as in "Huge" blowhard. Now he's pointing his idiocy at Michigan. Thanks to god - whether he be hoary thunderer or cosmic muffin - for Sam and Ira at WTKA.
