Which team do you like to watch play - hoping they will lose

Submitted by mGrowOld on

As suggested by Butterfield here is my personal "Top 10" of viewing hate:

1. Notre Dame - I simply dislike everything about them and their fans

2. Penn State - Their unbelievable fan denial and "we're the victim here" attitude post Sandusky changed me from respect to hate.

3. Michigan State - Used to be #2.  Still love watching them find new and creative ways to lose

4. USC - Lane Kiffin, the stupid horse, the stupid fight song, the stupid "V" where they don't really make a V - more of a lazy peace sign and their stealing not one but TWO Rose Bowls from Bo thanks to the Pac 10 officiating crew

5. Florida - Miami - Florida State - Axis of evil.  Always overrated, always boring to watch

8. Texas - Notre Dame lite fanbase

9. Ohio State - I actually like beating them more when they have a good record but watching them lose is fun none-the-less.  Their ranking will go higher next year when we're in the same division.

10. Any SEC team playing out of conference - Because obviously

What's yours?

MSU and Notre Dame absolutely MUST lose.  If either one of them wins, they will never shut up about it - granted, from two different perspectives.  An MSU win serves to lessen their feelings inferiority to us.  An ND win seems to confirm their superiortiy to the world of sport.  OSU is a distant third for me, but only out of schadenfreude and the calm feeling I get when I realize they can't win a national championship.

Aside from the usual suspects, some others are

Tennessee, Wisconsin, Purdue, Florida, Miami (YTM), Penn State, and Ole Miss. The last two were late additions, not sure if they will make the permanent roster.

1. OSU

2. MSU

3. ND

4. UF (I have a somewhat irrational loathing of Florida ever since they were voted into the BCS title game ahead of us in 06.  This hatred became even more pronounced when Bama was granted THEIR rematch in 12).

5. USC

6. SEC

7. Miami (Thug U)

This topic really should cover the teams you root against excluding our rivals because obviously we all love to see them lose.  So here's mine, excluding the rivals....

1.  NEBRASKA (1997, Scott Frost's big mouth, the Sun Belt officials literally handing them the 2005 Alamo Bowl, the B1G officials handing them the division title last year with blown calls in 3 games.)

2.  PENN STATE (Even before their fans and coaches embarrassed the B1G in the wake of the Sandusky scandal, we had their fans cheapening every Michigan win over them because of the officials who WANT to see Michigan win and Penn State lose.  Also, JoePa's insisting that PSU get bye weeks before playing Michigan and Ohio State and the conference actually giving that to him 4 straight years in the 90's.)

3.  FLORIDA STATE (St. Bobby Bowden being declared larger than life with his impressive record all the while major players still got to play in bowl games despite never going to class.  Plus the 1991 game still pisses me off.)

4.  TEXAS (Pretty much responsible for all the conference shifting and the end of many rivalries.  The Longhorns weren't sh*t until I was 24 years old.)

5.  USC (Major cheating program under Pete Carroll, always getting the help of the officials in critical Rose Bowl moments during the Schembechler years.  The only time I ever root for them is when they play Notre Dame.)

6.  WISCONSIN (Major breaks in conference scheduling helped them to every one of their Rose Bowls.)

7.  OREGON (2003, 2007 and Chip Kelly)

8.  ALABAMA (I don't care if you're coached by Nick Saban.  If you win 3 national championships in 4 years, you are a cheating program, plain and simple.  I badly want them knocked off their pedestal.)

9.  TENNESSEE (Fat Fulmer may be gone but the hatred for the Vols remains.)

10.  MIAMI (Probably the biggest thug program of all time.)

Far and away it's Notre Dame #1  for me.  I cannot stand the program, their smarmy entitled players,  asshole coaches, and fawning press.  That feeling got seated early for me with their dominance over us when the series resumed in the late 70s.  I simply had to root for other teams to stop them when we could not.  I would like them to lose every game forever.   I do pull for BIG teams over non-conference foes to help with conference image and the prestige of winning the conference, so no overriding hate for OSU or MSU.  Within the BIG  I typically want UM to be the one to beat OSU, so I do not explicitly pull against them (or little bro for that matter).  Outside of the BIG I have to say USC and UCLA can lose every game and I would laugh (again bad memories against them).  I have UW, Oregon and UGA connections so cannot hate there.  I guess Alabama could lose every game and that would be fun.  Fat chance.

Notre Dame didn't have any dominance over us when the series resumed in the late 70's.  We won the first game, then they won 2 in a row (both games by 2 points thanks to bad calls that were eventually dropped from the rule book) and then we won 3 of the next 4.

The only dominant period they had over us was the late 80's when they won 4 in a row (by 2 points, 5 points, 4 points.)

But I get and echo you're disdain for them.

1. That Irish Catholic school with a butchered French name in the middle of Amish Country in Indiana.

2. Little brother.

3. OHio

4. 'Bama / Any Florida Team

5. Colorado (I still wake up in a cold sweat with visions of Kordell Stewart heaving that Hail Mary over Ty Law... ~sigh~)

No joke - I turned that game off with 2 minutes left assuming we had the W as I was massively late to a wedding reception.  Learned the news at the reception...  Got hammered and laughed about it.  I tell you though, I am glad I missed it live...

DUKE in anything, any team Urban Meyer coaches or ever will coach, and MSU but not for the obvious reasons.  More because their mere existence handicaps Michigan relative to Ohio, much in the way our existence handicaps Ohio State.  Specifically, think of all of the great players that probably would have gone Blue if not for having to share the Big Ten platform with another in-state school - Kirk Gibson, Magic Johnson, The Situation from Jersey Shore (on full scholarship likely),  the entire prestigious, gifted and loyal Traverse City Bullough clan, etc., etc.

Probably the same way Ohio feels about Michigan, where they can imagine the Desmonds and Woodsons in Scarlet and Grey if not for that school up North.

1. Michigan St.

2. Every SEC team (except Missouri)

3. Notre Dame

4. USC

5. Kansas

6. Ohio St. - I don't like to watch them play, period so it's kindof hard to watch them and root against them. When they play sparty I root for both teams to lose

I used to feel about them like I feel about Nebraska now: good program, respect them, kind of rivals just by virtue of program significance

However, the amount of whining a (sadly large) section of the Penn State fanbase has done around JoePa's legacy and how they're victims and WE MUST OVERCOME has put them on the other side for me.

These were the two programs I used to root for outside of Michigan. Then PSU joined the Big Ten thinking they'd own in and became a bunch of whiny bastards (and then worse), and Nebraska sold its soul to finally win a bowl game recruiting criminals like Oklahoma , and became a bunch of whiny bastards. They were the two programs I thought were most like Michigan. And then the 90's showed not so much.

I agree with Wolverine Historian. Sparty is the obvious one for me. I want them to lose on their carpeting contract.

Otherwise, it's Penn State. I want them expelled from the Big 10 and Beaver Stadium burned down.

1)  Miami (Thug U)

2)  Notre Dame (So many years, so many reasons)

3)  FSU (Delusional fans think Bobby is/was a saint, their obnoxious warchant)

4)  MSU (A given)

5) Auburn (Pat "Tie" Dye, Cam Newton, the program has been cheaing FOREVER)

6) Texas A&M (Jackie Sherrill, wannabe cadets that pull sabres on opposing chearleaders, Johnny Manziel, cheaters)

7) Tennessee (Phil Fulmer and their knuckle headed fans)

8) Nebraska (SCOTT FROST crying for an NC, Lawrence Phillips, AND Tom Osborne)

9) Oklahoma (Barry Switzer)

10) Florida (Their fans need to realize they won their first SEC championship in 1991)

11) Southern Cal (OJ, Charles White phantom TD, always something dirty about them, their overdone chant)

12) Penn St. (Didn't like Paterno even when we thought he was only a crybaby)

Honorable Mentions:

- Anywhere Urban Meyer is the coach

- Anywhere Lou Holtz is/was the coach

1.  OSU

2. Sparty

3. ND

And at 4th I'll go with Bama at the moment just because of how good they've been the last 5 years.  I don't really have a problem with them, though.

It may be wrong of me but for MSU and OSU game, I literally love seeing kids in OSU or MSU gear crying if they are ever losing.  I just hate these two programs so so much.

Outside of hating the annoying gnats from EL, I don't ever want a top recruit to look at them and think they're a good program with quality wins to point to for validation.

I want getting crabs to be more desirable than playing at MSU.

Michigan, obviously, then

1. all the Michigan directionals and,

2. sparty*

3. Also, I have a soft spot for Iowa and Northwestern*

4. Any B1G vs any SEC**

5. Auburn

Against

1. Ohio State***

2. Notre Dame - pretty much I want them  to lose every game.  I really hate everything about them.

3. SEC vs anyone (Auburn exemption)

4. Wisky

*but only enough so they don't threaten Michigan's hold on the division.

**there are exceptions for uppity B1G teams

***not always, want them to have hope in the Game, only to see them lose it

Decatur Jack

Probably Sparty. OSU is too competent right now to choke away a game, so it just gets frustrating watching them beat on weaker opponents. Sparty, however, you never know...

1. Anybody ahead of Michigan in the rankings.

2. Any B1G team that will help Michigan in some way.

3. Any Florida team.

4. Any SEC team.

5. USC

6. Texas/Oklahoma

I don't really root against Michigan rivals because it helps Michigan when they win.  However, it does feel nice to see them lose when it does happen.  Win-Win.

Ohio...No one more so!  Especially with their usually low strength of schedule, I would like nothing more to see them lose to one of the multitude of Ohio schools they schedule every year.

BlueinLansing

September 3rd, 2013 at 7:54 PM ^

always, always, always.  College football was glorious without them being relevant.  Absofukinglutely glorious.

Thing is, I can't even stand to watch them play, not even one play.  Because the chances of something lucky and stupid happening are infinitly greater if I'm watching.  If I know they're behind or the other team is driving late I might tune in just at the off chance of enjoying some shaudenfraude, but there is no team in college that I despise more from the inner core of my soul than this outfit.

bluebyyou

September 3rd, 2013 at 8:09 PM ^

In no particular order of "I hope they lose:"

Penn State

Wisconsin

Tennessee

ND

MSU

As for Ohio, it makes our victory even better when we knock them off when they are having a great season.  I would like 2006's every year, with a different outcome.

Mr. Yost

September 3rd, 2013 at 9:09 PM ^

It used to be Ohio. Now I don't care if they win or lose if it doesn't have any barring on Michigan. It would be MSU...but you said "like to watch" and I can't stand watching them. It's horrible.

Bosch

September 3rd, 2013 at 9:11 PM ^

There was a time, not so long ago, when watching a game to specifically root against a team would be considered to be very "Sparty-like". This thread is embarassing.

M-Wolverine

September 4th, 2013 at 2:50 PM ^

It's always cool to root against your opponents. It's when you would rather see your opponent suck more than your team succeed that it becomes Sparty-like.

Bosch

September 4th, 2013 at 11:25 PM ^

avatar and somehow associate that to me turning on an OSU game for no other reason than to root against them? Ok....

Getting a kick out of a team loses is one thing.... Becoming emotionally invested in that scenario, which is what you are doing if you are watching a game and are "hoping" that a hated team loses, is completely Sparty.... and not something fans of programs that matter should brag about.

Ohio without a doubt. I want them to lose every game. I get so sick of the whole "root for them to win so the game will mean more come November" school of thought. I live in Temperance MI and work in Toledo Oh , a place crawling with a lot of loud, obnoxious, delusional, Ohio fans. Where I live is the front lines of this rivalry. I relish an Ohio defeat.

UMgradMSUdad

September 3rd, 2013 at 10:26 PM ^

I want to see all B1G teams win every out of conference game and every SEC team lose every ooc game. I would prefer OSU and MSU to go undefeated except for their games against Michigan.  It makes the victory that much more delicious.

I guess if there is one team I would enjoy seeing lose, it's ND because of their sanctimonious fans and the way they backed out of the agreement to play Michigan.

UGA Fan Crying on Radio after loss to Clemson

I hate their fan base with the heat of a thousand suns...so Saturday was a great day for me!

Once they finish their 0-2 start, the meltdowns will be outstanding.

P.S. I do like and respect Mark Richt...he deserves better treatment than he receives from these mindless yokels.

I do root for Georgia Tech.

My girlfriend is a Texas Tech fan so I root for them as well and against Texas.

Kinda sucks for her right now though...she is also a huge Niners fan and Colt McCoy is a backup.  I thinks it's funny.  She does not agree.
