Senior Day Haiku 2012
Craig Roh
A leaf blows in fall
Tasting each position once
Time to duck, Martinez
Will Campbell
These days people who
are not Thomas Gordon say
"Get off of me, please"
Jordan Kovacs
A man from nowhere
is the safety blanket for
a hundred thousand
Kenny Demens
As Northwestern died
they must have thought "ouch" and
"my god, sweet mustache"

Sorry about things said
two years ago, low and mean
Mattison saves all
Brandin Hawthorne
We'll always have that
Purdue hash to hash zone drop
and a kickoff hold
Brandon Moore
Must be a good guy
to get Kramer's eighty-seven
time to make stories
Vincent Smith
Meet mini-Gandalf:
finger-gun Balrog LB,
state YOU SHALL NOT PASS

The measure of man:
how many squirrels can live
in your face, repos'd

that would have made most depart
and we needed him to

A scientist of brains, yes
And blocker of sweeps

Denard Robinson
I had been in the desert for some time, lost and directionless. The sun was relentless. A deadly thirst stalked me. I had not accepted the grisly fate which awaited me but was powerless to change it.
On the fifth night—possibly the sixth—a breeze arose. It was cool and dewy. I savored it for a time, then step by step it led me home.

Denard's Haiku is truly poetic and deep. Nicely done.
November 16th, 2012 at 1:03 PM ^
It reminds me of Siddhartha for some reason, which is a compliment.

Roundtree?!

He birthed two great memes:
Worst Waldo ever, and then
The snake-oil prize.

Argh. Updated.
November 16th, 2012 at 1:30 PM ^
The link for the Brandin Hawthorne Haiku goes to the 2011 WMU game in which Brandon Herron has to go hash to hash? Is this a mistake? Or am I not in on this joke?

That's what I'll remember him for -- he came up huge in that game. Not everyone can leave as a star player, but he can leave knowing he made a couple big plays in one of the program's signature games during his four years. (Was a solid special-teamer, too.)
With Odoms gone and now w/Hawthorne and V. Smith graduating, I think Richard Ash will be the last of RichRod's Pahokee kids left on the team. I sure hope we keep a recruiting pipeline open to there -- guys like Odoms and Smith have been true Michigan Men on and off the field.
November 16th, 2012 at 12:51 PM ^
Look at that list! I'd better do some cleaning; it's going to get very, very dusty in my family room tomorrow.

Demens is the guy
that I think of as better
than Obi Ezeh
The Northwestern tackle was cool, but I can't help but always remember Demens as the guy who came in with no experience whatsoever and was immediately better than the guy who'd been around forever and that we seemingly had no other choice but to play.
Man, it seems like just yesterday we were shitting ourselves over whether Campbell would stick or not. Roh and Barnum can't possibly be seniors either.
November 16th, 2012 at 2:43 PM ^
I can't believe some of these guys are graduating already. Time just keep flying by faster & faster.
November 16th, 2012 at 1:00 PM ^
Blink and you missed it.
Dilithium Era ends,
Shoes cannot be filled.
November 16th, 2012 at 2:44 PM ^
I think that Denard's shoes can (maybe) be filled, but they definitely can't be tied.
November 16th, 2012 at 1:08 PM ^
Like the snow you took
back to Florida with you
unique but now gone
(Of all of the Denard things, the fact that he took a Ziploc bag of Michigan snow back to Florida with him after his recruiting visit remains my favorite.)

"Too good to redshirt."
Broken plays are dangerous.
Just look at that speed.
...cya...

Love this one. Works perfectly

Why does Barnum get 6 syllables in his last line?
November 16th, 2012 at 1:20 PM ^
he got the 7th syllable from Demens' second line.

Seniors did beat Ohio
defeated little bro green,
Fulfilled goals met
November 16th, 2012 at 1:21 PM ^
Loved it. Not sure if it is in the works, but I hope a whole Denard retrospective post is coming.
November 16th, 2012 at 1:22 PM ^
Wow, super goosebumps reading Denard's poem. Writing like that is the reason I can't stop reading this site!

Denard just made me weep. I hate this week.
November 16th, 2012 at 2:47 PM ^
...if there is any silver lining to Denard graduating, it would be the return of the Shoelace t-shirt, right? I'm still upset with myself for not ordering one of those when I had the chance.

Damn, tomorrow's gonna suck. They might not have had the storybook UM career, but damn if they haven't experienced everything you can experience as a College Football player

Ricky Barnum
Stayed through some things
that would have made most depart
and we needed him to
Sure, he won't be a first-round NFL draft choice, but saying we needed him to depart is a bit of a low blow.

November 16th, 2012 at 2:22 PM ^
Eh, haikus blow anyhow. As do all forms of poetry.
November 16th, 2012 at 9:29 PM ^
Thank you for saying that out loud.
November 16th, 2012 at 2:09 PM ^
I read it a completely different way: "Stayed through some things, and we needed him to."

still wonder how things would have turned out if Martin redshirted his freshman year and was playing on this team. In addition, it is too bad Roh and BWC weren't redhirted their freshman year so they could be back next year to anchor the line. I still cringe when I think about BWC burning his redshirt on the extra point team.
