OT: Boise State @ MSU this Friday. What are your predictions or thoughts?

Submitted by WingsNWolverines on

I'm sure many of us if not all of us (cause I know I am) are hoping to see the Broncos come into EL and tear the Spartans a new one but with Boise replacing pretty much their whole offense and some linemen on defense how do you think Boise State will fair against FYS this coming Friday? I fear this could very well be a rout for Sparty but with a new offense and QB at the helm I could also see them struggling in this game. Defensively though is where Sparty should kill them in my opinion.

I was sitting by the 45 yard line on the opposite side and there was a group of Spartans fans sitting below us and this one guy wearing a green S hat with a green hoodie on kept dropping f bombs out really loud every time State had a 3 and out or when Nebraska would score. I had my 10 year old niece with me and some of my cousins who are in middle school and the rest of my family was there but I was getting really pissed off with him and the way he was handling himself. Are most fans of theirs like that? They weren't really friendly people coming into the stadium too. All of immature guys it seemed at least the students were.

I keed -- MSU fans are harmless (or drunk) on the road.  It's East Lansing where the fans rise up to the levels of Ohio State-style douchebaggery.  Michigan fans, just like everyone else, will have their bad apples and then the majority will be cool and try to convince Huskers that we were true national champs in '97.

They are pretty much the worst especially when they are competitive. How a fan base can act totally entitled and have an inferiority complex is beyond me. Also, many alums never forget the bitchin' keggers they had in school, so that mentality emerges during football games. I suspect that happens everywhere though, maybe more at social schools.

"Most" fans are not like that, but many on this blog would argue that MSU possesses a higher contingent of such fans. It's tempting to let one rowdy fan color your perceptions of a team, but it's unfair to the other fans of said team.

While it's entirely likely that your children hear worse things in school on an hourly basis, I would have asked him politely not to swear

And I'm sorry that people from Michigan acted like that in front of your family.  I observed a similar experience here in Ann Arbor during the 2003 Michigan-OSU game where a loud-mouthed, cretin fan of OSU sitting in our section made an embarrassment of himself and his fan-base by uttering every kind of obscenity in front of men, women, and children.  He was shouted down on a number of occasions and finally left when he realized his team was going down to defeat.

But, I have to say that I was VERY impressed with the Nebraska fans who attended the game in Ann Arbor last fall.  I never saw a single person act like a creep and they showed a ton of class IMO.

I just don't see Boise State winning this game, or doing much on offense.  I think that MSU will be able to run the ball effectively and Maxwell will be relatively mistake-free, which is all Sparty can ask for in his first start.  I will definitely be watching this game in Dallas, of course :)

I pretty much agree with the OP. MSU defense will win them the game. Boise just lost too many talented and needed players for them to win this game. That being said I still think Boise keeps it close but losses in the end.

I agree. It'll hurt the MSU fan base more when Michigan hands them their first loss. They will come in all confident, but will forget they didn't bring the trash tornado. On a different note, there is a reason kellen Moore is the winningest qb of all time and still went undrafted. Boise will have a huge droppoff this year.

MSU will win in an ugly, defensive minded game. Neither team will have good offenses and MSU's defense should outclass Boise's. Both teams will have new QBs, but with MSU at home they should win.

It'll be close, probably around 20-14. I wouldn't be shocked of Boise won, but if I was a betting man I'd put money on MSU

but MSU should roll over Boise St. I just don't see how MSU can lose this game at home, with a good defense, and servicable offense. However, as far as who I hope will win? I hope Boise St. wins. I hate MSU enough to discard the "B1G loyalty" variable.

Boise State lost quite a bit of talent up front on defense, to a point where they might be trotting some DEs out there who haven't logged any game time before, if their camp was any indication. If Michigan State can get an offensive drive here and there going, Boise State might be hard-pressed to stop it and would have to rely on their secondary (the most experienced unit) to prevent State from breaking off big plays.

Despite Maxwell being the most apparent unknown quantity in the MSU offense, he's got a good line in front of him and he'll get time to read and throw. I think State's defense probably makes it difficult for Boise State to score more than a couple times - they seem good enough to slow down that offense considerably, and there is just not a lot of data on  Joe Southwick (probably who Boise rolls out at QB), but very likely he is not Kellen Moore.

State wins this one by a comfortable margin, I imagine - something in the 34-20 range.

I think that the scores will be relatively low, being the first game of the season, but I think MSU wins this game.

I just can't see Boise doing much against MSU's defense, and the Spartans always play well at home.  While the score may not indicate it, I don't think it will be close.

alas--drooling on them. If we have lost to Alabama, bet on the media to be shiI**ing on UM after the weekend. It will prove nothing, because Boise without an offense is almost no team at all, but that's the breaks. MSU at home, running the ball down Boise's throat, is likely to equal a sizeable win.

Only way I see it being close is if Maxwell really struggles. Sparty should dominate in the trenches.

MSU is a party school for the most part.  Their fans can be good guys at times, but for the most part they are just drunk college guys who thought football started in 2008.  There's always 1 or 2 fans that get ejected from the stadium from their section when they visit Ann Arbor.

It's been interesting to see how much more frequently he brings up football in conversation the past few years. He was the poster child "wait until hoops" kinda guy until recently.

On a side note, we both can't believe that Arkansas hired JLS, even if it's only for this year. I live in the middle of Hog Country, and I'm shocked at how many people think they're going to win it all this year. Fun press conferences, though...

State probably scheduled this game because they realized Boise would be losing a lot of key players. They get so lucky with their schedule. They ended up playing the JV squad at Ohio last year when all the tat offenders were suspended. I want Boise to win but I just do not see it happening.

Yeah, they've played the two-time defending B1G champions three times over the past two years, while we've played them zero times.

I understand your point about Ohio's team and Boise's team, but let's not pretend that we haven't had our scheduling breaks as well - MSU arguably had a tougher bowl opponent than we did, too, despite not making it to a BCS bowl game.

MSU should win this handily.  Given it's at home and Boise is replacing just about everybody, if State doesn't win this one, it's going to be a long, difficult season for the Spartans.

I highly doubt that Boise wins this game. MSU picked a good season to play them in the opener, because people still remember them as "OMG BOISE" when without Kellen Moore I suspect they'll be meh. MSU should win handily, regardless of their offensive struggles. 35-7 MSU. I'd be happy to be wrong, however.

I think Sparty wins, but it's going to be closer than people think, like a 24-21 affair. Boise's biggest weapon is that they are completely underestimated, and they are no strangers to big games and hostile crowds. Just ask Bob Stoops, Frank Beamer and Mark Richt. They will not be intimidated by MSU.

Chris Petersen is one of the best coaches in football, and he will have his guys ready to play. But with the amount they have to replace, I just don't see hem getting out of EL with a victory. The MSU defense will make life miserable for Boise's new QB all night. The MSU offense will sputter at times, but it's Maxwell's first game. He'll do enough to get by, and Bell will carry the load.

Defenses are usually ahead of offenses in the first game and these two offenses have a lot of new players at key positions. So, whoever wins the turnover battle will win the game. Could be some ugly offense played on Friday night. The only way the winner scores more than 20 points is if the defense contributes at leat one score.

...how they think they are the second coming and everyone is talking about how great they are gonna be, it would make my night if they got bitch smacked by 20+. I have never been sick of a fanbase in my life more than OSU's until this past 9 months. They need a reality check. Im hoping everyone hands it to them all the way to us so Michigan can bury them. Ready to usher in a new era. Michigan state might not be the joke of the past, but we still own this State.

Michigan Arrogance. I welcome it back.

I want Sparty to be unbeaten and completely full of themselves when we play them. Their heads will be huge, but their collars will be tight.

Have MSU as a 7 to 10 point home favorite with an over/under at 45........They must be thinking it will be  MSU running the ball and controlling the clock with their ground game and defense.  At this time of the year, before anyone has played anyone else, they are usually your best prognosticators.
