As chair of the CFP Committee, does he have authoritarian power to issue orders that destroy Ohio State? Asking for a friend.

If I recall, FSU ended up…

If I recall, FSU ended up playing Michigan in the Big House when Deion was at FSU in the mid-1980s. Deion did not have a good game. I think he picked up a pass interference and was otherwise not useful. But I'm glad he got to play in the Big House and I'm glad to see him doing well at Colorado.

Native Ann Arborite who has been in Nola for 18 years here. I have a long email of things to do and tips for visitors. I'm happy to send it to you if you'd like. I also have a smaller version of it in Google Maps form here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1qSOdqQZ410Pji7HxJw_rNxk2vqI&ll=29.95824602693513%2C-90.0991639515099&z=13

A few notes: (1) Willie Mae's Scotch House had a fire and is closed. (2) the "Willie Mae's" that is in the French Quarter is a phony attempt by someone to take the name and sell bad chicken. (3) I suggest checking out WWOZ's "Takin' It To The Streets" to see if there are any big parades while you are in town. If you like WWII, the museum is huge and the best military museum I've ever been to.

This is wonderful news. Happy for Jimmy King! Those who stay will be champions. Also, those who return will be champions.

I love the idea of Oregon…

I love the idea of Oregon and Washington. I also like the idea of bringing in Miami and FSU. I don't want to bring in any awful programs like Rutgers and Maryland. We need top tier schools if we're going to be the premier conference. I'd also like Cal and Utah. We need great schools to strengthen the conference. I'll never understand people who want to play nothing but weak teams with the hope of running the table just to make it into the playoffs. There's nothing more boring and embarrassing than UM beating up on tomato cans. Let's get the best players and best teams and best coaches together and enjoy the ride.

Feels like we are in deeply…

Feels like we are in deeply political territory, and I don't like that for MGoBlog. I was about to write a post about how I think we should be tolerant of people with different politics, including Shemy. But when I saw a few of those posts, I thought that goes beyond politics and reflects a problem beyond politics, and something that we cannot have. That said, I still have respect for people who have plenty of other good qualities, and don't think they should be tarred with a scarlet letter. But some of the crap he posted seems to really push the boundaries of what I tend to tolerate.

I love documentaries. I’d say check out Tickled, Red Dog Saloon, and Command and Control.

I use FuboTV and the out-of…

I use FuboTV and the out-of-market games are one of the few drawbacks. I live in the South, and FuboTV won't let me watch Lions games. For some reason, Southerners do not follow the Lions as closely as they should, so the games do not come on TV very often. Fubo won't let me declare my home team as the Lions or Detroit as my region. I tried to be clever and designate my home market when I was traveling through Detroit and had a layover at the airport. But Fubo got wise when I flew back South, and blocked my access to Lions games. The only recourse is that FuboTV has NFL Redzone, which I've now used to monitor all the games, including bits of the Lions games. I like the Redzone, but it's a lot to handle at once. On another Fubo note, I do want to hype one aspect of FuboTV: Multiview. I love that I can watch up to four college games at once using Multiview. The only way to get this is if you have the right kind of TV and you get an Apple dohicky television thing attached to it. I don't understand Information Technology, so setting it up was a royal pain. But now that it is set up, the Multiview is great and works like a charm as long as your internet connection is solid. Very smooth interface to increase the size on the screen of certain games, switch games out, change audio, etc.

TL;DR: Fubo makes it really hard to watch out-of-region games, even if you try to sneakily declare your region as a different region then you actually live. But in my opinion, the Multiview function rather makes up for the other shortcomings.

If my memory serves me right…

If my memory serves me right, Deion Sanders played in the Big House with FSU in the mid-1980s in a game where he was pretty much rendered ineffective and wracked up a bad penalty while Michigan rolled to victory.

I love both the QBs, and…

I love both the QBs, and frankly I'm a bit bummed. I think Cade has earned the QB1 position. Not that I know better than Harbaugh. I also worry that we tempt the football gods to smite us if we bench the QB who took us to the CFP.

I feel like the more…

I feel like the more complicated the setup, the more likely there will be some hiccup during the game that will bring everything down. The really cool thing would be to have some sort of way to get the TV to sync up with the radio so that I can listen to radio broadcast while watching the game. I don't think anyone has figured that out yet.

I have previously thought…

I have previously thought about getting a projector, but my worry is that it wouldn't be high enough quality. But I don't have a theater room. Seems that with a theater room would be perfect for Saturdays.

The southern wind brings a…

The southern wind brings a putrid stink, like the breeze from Hades. It happens every two years. The marauding hordes of Ohio State are leaving their stables, one by one, hauling their spawn northwards in caravans of trucks, banging on pots and pans and drooling profusely. Disgusting. You can avoid them by holing up in zingerman’s because not one ohioan is refined enough to know of its existence. Instead, they will gather outside the town fortifications, probably at some Shoney’s, where they will mush waffles into their pie holes and bleat low-brow slogans. God help us. Michigan 27, Ohio State 24.

[Harbaugh Drop #B-192]…

[Harbaugh Drop #B-192]. Trust the Plan, people. Everything Wolverine is falling into place. The Great Awakening is just getting started. Some of you rubes still believe the MSM that the Ohio State Buckeyes have beaten Michigan in football for eight straight years. Do you sheeple really think our messiah Jim Harbaugh would let the Deep Ohio State simply march all over us in broad daylight for eight years in a row?! Eight straight losses is just what the secret microchips want you to believe. But Harbaugh is playing four-dimensional football while y’all are playing one-dimensional checkers. Soon it will all be revealed. In fact, we didn’t lose any of those games. Don’t listen to the lying MSM. We won those games by huge, landslide margins. And we won by a landslide despite the fact that the Buckeyes were using dirty tricks. As I mentioned in an earlier post that got removed by Mark Zuckerberg, first, those eight games included points that the Buckeyes unjustly scored and which should not have been counted in the final total. Second, the scoreboard was manufactured in China by a Chinese manufacturer, and that is suggestive of incorrect point totalidge that should have been tossed out rather than verified. Third, secret, late-arriving points resulted in increased Wolverine points which is not reflected in MSM “official box scores.” Fourth, the head referee did not properly certify the point total, which means the final score decision should be sent to the NCAA Rules Committee, which Harbaugh has cleverly stacked with Wolverine fans for precisely this purpose. 4D football, my friends. In fact, I just heard from a source with connections to a High Up Military Commander that the Rules Committee has *already* secretly (1) ruled that Michigan won all eight of those games, (2) transferred Urban Meijer’s to Guantanamo (the TV Urban is just a body double), and (3) the Committee is waiting for the right moment to reveal this to the world on the Emergency Broadcast System#. Once it is revealed, no doubt there will be consternation among the Buckeye fans and at truck stops throughout Ohio. But worry not my fellow patriots, the military is on our side to quell any Buckeye uprising. Please share before Zuckerberg/Soros removes this from www.Facebook.com. Where Harbaugh Goes One, We Go All. #WHG1WGA

I'm fine with Jackson…

I'm fine with Jackson lashing out like that. Fans hurl verbal abuse at players at the precise moment they are at a low point (losing a game). We expect them to be amped up to play but then expect them to not react to verbal abuse. Some fans treat players like animals in a zoo. I wasn't really angered by Marcus Hall's middle finger either. I'll continue to root for Giles Jackson as a former Wolverine. The part of the fan base that hates on former players is only a small (but very vocal) part of the fan base.

That's a good point. Maybe…

That's a good point. Maybe each generation of fan has "that one official" who we hate. Kemerling for the USC era, for sure. The phantom touchdown was garbage, of course. I didn't recall the "Bo's last game" incident (https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1990-01-02-sp-135-story.html). But I thought Bo handled it pretty well. He still gave USC its due.

For me, there was a long period during which it seemed like officials were in favor of MSU (e.g., the Desmond trip; the clock operator game).

I think it would be good to…

I think it would be good to highlight the two or three major offensive schemes that hockey teams use, and describe their respective strengths and weaknesses, and how to spot each kind. It would help the casual fan like me know what is happening.

I will admit that I have a…

I will admit that I have a rather unpopular opinion on this. Artest may have been playing somewhat dirty, but I think it is entirely reasonable to lose composure and attack a fan. Yeah, he picked the wrong one. But we ask far too much of our athletes that they maintain composure when having abuse hurled at them. Frankly, I wasn't that upset about OSU's Marcus Hall flipping off the Michigan crowd. I hate OSU more than anyone, but he'd just been in a fight and was getting abuse hurled at him. Flipping off A2 is no big deal. It would be best for athletes to not do this stuff, but if I were in their shoes I'd find it hard not to respond.

Anyway, for those interested, here is a damn good long form article on Malice at the Palace with a lot of first-hand accounts: https://grantland.com/features/an-oral-history-malice-palace/

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned, but if I recall Bill Walton always hated on the Fab Five. Something about them being new and baggy shorts and edgy was just too much for that old hippie.

I can speak on this. I’ve…

I can speak on this. I’ve drafted legislation addressing privacy/public health issues, and have pushed for changes in law publicly for several years. Here in Louisiana, the state cancer registry uses bogus privacy law assertions to block cancer data from researchers. This artificially (and I would argue, illegally) suppresses good research that could save lives. There is an effort afoot to change things. HIPAA only applies to certain health providers, and not to certain entities that simply House this data. There are other privacy laws that apply, and they are different in each state. So it’s not narrowly a HIPAA issue. I believe that data is suppressed even when there is no good justification under privacy law.

That is one of the things I…

That is one of the things I was talking about with the LSU fans. I think that sort of low-grade rivalry stuff is fine. I think shutting off electricity or water goes beyond what is acceptable. And in other countries some soccer fanatics hurl stuff at opposing player buses. Thank god we have not degraded to that level of behavior yet.

Being a long-time resident…

Being a long-time resident of SEC country, I would love to see the Big Ten take on the SEC. it would be the football equivalent of the Big Ten-ACC challenge in college basketball. But a Big Ten-SEC football challenge would be way more interesting. Twelve games spread out on an early December Saturday, four games in each of the three time slots. What Big Ten team fan would not watch?

I agree. And I think the …

I agree. And I think the “southern teams don’t want to play in the cold” is a myth. Tell Auburn they could play in the Big House in December and I’ll bet the players and fans would love to make the road trip.

Thanks MichGoBlue. I like…

Thanks MichGoBlue. I like getting a conference champion too, but maybe I’m just stuck in the old system. I don’t like having two divisions, and the championship game always seems to be about whether one team can block the other from the playoff. It’s lame that we are stuck playing Rutger and Maryland while traditional foes like Wisconsin disappear for years. But the thing that bothers me most is that only two teams of the conference play that weekend. I’d rather see the whole conference challenge a PAC 12, SEC, Big 12, or ACC.

The article Jmer posted…

The article Jmer posted noted that coaches and universities would be reluctant to make this chatter public for several reasons. It may be very harsh on players, filled with curses, etc. That said, it seems to me that, assuming they exist, very old headset recordings would not involve current staff or players, and would not divulge football strategies. It would be cool if universities could occasionally release snippets of interesting plays or interesting chatter. Maybe my inner historian just thinks that this sort of stuff should be preserved.

When I think of Bo I think…

When I think of Bo I think of off-tackle and draw plays. I like beginning with the unstoppable off-tackle, but I was never a fan of the draw play. Seems like on every third and long he was calling a draw play up the middle that never came close to getting a first down.

Thanks OwenGoBlue!

It would be a good question someone could ask the guy managing the UM football archives. If it turns out that there is a vault of those tapes, it would be cool for them to release occasional audio from interesting plays or interesting moments.

Looks like the All-Ancient…

Looks like the All-Ancient team entry is afterall, but now I don't see how it is possible to edit a post once it has been made.

I appreciate the time and…

I appreciate the time and effort that our MGoBlog leaders have put into this. That said, here are my beefs:

  1. Most people presumably read MGoBlog on their iPhones, and it is frustrating that the best app was removed awhile back, and now the original app is not functioning either. We really just need a good iPhone app that we can stick with and is helpful. The current blog is NOT reader-friendly for iPhone users compared to the old iPhone apps.
  2. I hate that I cannot see the MGoBoard posts in the order of most recent uploaded (not comments, rather the actual post). Allowing users to review by post date allows us to quickly scan the entries to until we see posts from the last time we were logged in. Makes for efficient reading when the list is sorted that way. The problem now is that all the newest comments push a post to the top of the list, so I don't know what posts I have and haven't read. Seems like there should be a column with the post date that makes the list sortable.
  3. As a long-time lurker, reading this blog daily for many years, I take pride in the fact that I do not post a bunch of unhelpful crap. Too many people need to learn the concept of an unexpressed thought. Along those lines, I wish MGoBlog would allow me to earmark my favorite commenters so that instead of seeing 200 crappy comments, I see only the ten or so comments from my preferred list of commenters (e.g., UMBig11, Seth, Ace, MGrowOld, etc.). It would really improve the site if we had more control in order to weed out the riff-raff from our reading experiences.
  4. Also, I don't like the non-sequential style of the home page. It's a bunch of articles rather than a sequential list that I can quickly scroll to see what has happened since the last time I logged in. Frankly, it looks a bit Dave Brandon-ized, with branding and giant photos rather than substance. And the top articles do not appear to be in the blog entries (e.g., All Ancient History Team)
  5. I also hate that clicking "read more" takes me to a new page rather than just unlocks the missing content below. And even if you are going to get clicks by making us go to a new page, at least make it scroll automatically to middle of the article where we left off when clicking "read more".
  6. Why is it so damn hard to post photos on this damn site. It is 2018 yet I can't just click the photo icon and upload a photo.

I don't see what improvements this new site adds. It has removed app functionality, made it more cumbersome to read in several ways, made it harder to review what I missed since I last checked in, forces unnecessary page clicks, and retains the same problem with difficulty posting.

In the mid-1980s when I went

In the mid-1980s when I went to school at Pattengil Elementary School, Bo Schembechler used to bring football players, along with basketball players, cheerleaders, and athletes from other assorted sports annually to the school in the evenings for a fundraiser, complete with raffles and lots of Michigan stuff up for auction. I got to meet Harbaugh and Bo and get their autographs. Tim McCormick held me up to dunk a basketball, and I got my picture in the A2 News with Butch Wade. Butch spend the evening teaching us kids how to shoot free throws (I'm kidding).

I mention it because it is the sort of fan/player interaction that Harbaugh himself engaged in when he was a student at UM. Would be great if they started doing this again.

Why would Patterson give up a

Why would Patterson give up a sure-thing starting role in the SEC in order to transfer to a school where he is not guaranteed to start and must face serious competition just to see the field? I understand that Ole Miss can't go to a bowl game, but so what? Many people don't play in bowl games (Hurst may not, for example). And it's not like Ole Miss' scholarship reductions are going to immediately damage to the team, at least sufficient to warrant a transfer. It's entirely possible that he rides the bench and can't get to the NFL because he loses out to one of the many great UM QBs here already. Does anyone have a good answer as to why he would give up his starting role?
