Backyard Brawl

West Virginia - Pittsburgh, 2007. All the dominoes that fell as a result of that game have been fascinating to me. The what-ifs for Michigan football (who would we have hired instead, what trajectory would it put us on, does it lead to Harbaugh sooner or at all) go on and on.

Some days

Some days you just can't get rid of a bomb.

Quote

"I don't like that man.  I must get to know him better."  #Lincoln'ed.

I'm at Chicago-Midway

Same.

Sigh

Do dong punches fall under this policy?  Or is that something that's seen as a collective effort?  Just needing some clarity here.

Brady Hoke's jazz hands

My wife said that it looked like he was going "Oh you got trouble...right here in River City!"

Ok...

Dave Brandon, like any AD, partners with the Development office to oversee fundraising for athletics.  Does replacing "the athletic department" with "Dave Brandon" really change the meaning dramatically for you?

Endowments

No university would reallocate a gift that removes a large amount of money from the annual operating budget, particularly if the family is still alive and they agreed to this as part of their gift.  The family wanted to make a $10M gift to the athletic department and the department said "why don't we name the head coach in honor of this generous gift?"

Besides, legally, an institution can't just remove a named endowment fund.  It's not "embarrassing" - it's stewardship of a donor.

Plus, you are undoubtedly overstating the effect this has on your relationship with Michigan football.  None of us are walking around calling Brady Hoke the J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Head Football Coach.  Aside from press releases and listings in various documents, this is nothing that the average fan thinks about.

Thank you for this

I keep a spreadsheet with names, dates, and number of times someone posts a frivolous topic on our current situation.  So please, please continue to post snowflakes every time you think of Michigan's potential coaching and AD searches at work.  Other posters may not care...but science does.

Pizza

Domino's is (734) 332-1111.  Someone send over about six pizzas.  Will six cover it?  Better go seven to be sure.

I get what you're saying

And I see your point.

The way that many arguments have been framed against John Harbaugh here is that there are many more responsibilities for a coach in college than there are in the NFL.  I would mostly agree with that.  What it comes down to (in my view at least) is what the risk/reward is of giving someone like him a shot versus keeping Brady Hoke around - someone who has to this point not succeeded on the field (or because of his AD, not been put in a position to succeed).

Is a Super-Bowl winning coach less qualified than a sub-.500 MAC and Mountain West coach?  Is the Mountain West a different monster than the Big Ten?

Michigan has a lot of resources to hire almost whoever they want to coach the team and I'd rather take the chance, if he was open to listening to us.

Yes

Thank god that a decent, Super Bowl-winning football coach turned us down before we offered the job.  He isn't good enough to coach at Michigan.

Yes Brady Hoke is preferable

Yes Brady Hoke is preferable to the Harbaugh who won a Super Bowl but NOT the Harbaugh who did some stuff at Stanford. Got it.

Eh

How did that work for Jim Mora at UCLA?  No college coaching experience apart from being a GA.  I think we would all take those results on the field, along with his currently fundraising for a new football performance center.

After his first stint in the NFL, Pete Carroll came back to run USC with only assistant coaching experience in college and yeah.

Even Bill Walsh came from the NFL to Stanford.

I don't think this argument is valid.  Or at least as big of a deal as you think.

Obvsly

Hire Kyle Flood.

Huh

Me too.

Don't bitch

Don't bitch, don't  talk, just lace up the shoes and beat the shit out of State! I love this team! Now if Hoke can get his team to play like this all will be right in the world!

Keeping with Browns tradition

Cleveland.com also reporting that Pettine to be fired in a day or two.

I tried

I tried and all that came out was "LOLLMFAO".

I'ma need

I'ma need a gif of that sad Buckeye fan looking sad.

Yeah, congrats

What can you say?  It was a good season for them.  Narduzzi has built a great defense.

As I live in Ohio, my social media is already filled with people begging that someone (mostly Fickell or Herman) be fired.

Eh

More of a factual statement than a prediction.

I don't think

I don't think he will start personally, but if he did, it wouldn't surprise me. It has been an offense based on gimmicks for three years and this would be yet another one.

Welcome!

All of your Scandinavian offensive linemen belong to us!

Pretty simple

If I'm not winning the game, I will change the rules until I am.

My biggest fear

My biggest fear is that OSU continues their run and, now that they will be in our division, they stake a claim to the Championship game every season because we can't coach our players up. Maybe it's the pessimism of this season, but I don't see how we compete for a B1G title in the near future. Something must change with this staff - these players are not in a position to succeed.

Speaking of trucks

My brother and I were walking around the athletic campus last Saturday looking at some of the renovations and we ended up cutting across the parking lot next to Schembechler Hall.  Coach Funk's reserved parking space was empty.  The joke that we made was almost too easy.

Hire

Jon Gruden

What makes me uncomfortable

What makes me uncomfortable is how often Hoke deflected the blame for the offensive line on them not playing consistently, their youth, their [lack of or incorrect] preparation and he put little-to-no-blame on the offensive coaching staff.

And I hate to say it but Drew Sharp's question about Hoke wanting his team to play a certain way but it not working was, I think, the best question.  Fort Schembechler won't provide any answers but, with the way they're playing, it's time to ask the questions.

Well

In all seriousness, 8 points per game seemed like an awfully high average to constitute a legit tanking of the season.

Krislov

Oberlin is in the midst of a $250 million campaign - the largest in the school's history.  I've heard that he still loves Ann Arbor and UM.

Currently in the Birmingham airport

There seems to be a lot of excitement around the game. I was talking with a fellow passenger (in their Bama shirt) and he expects Saban to be prepared. He thought Manziel's ability to scramble might get them a TD or two but he thinks Bama's defense will contain him enough for their offense to go to work.

Dynamite drop-in Monty, I know, but I felt like I needed to report from the trenches.

At some point

Sports Illustrated must be pissed that their "major" stories involving the NCAA (Emmert; Miami; Oregon, mostly; this) never seem to go anywhere.

Gibbons

Shout-out to Gibbons, who has become a very reliable kicker no matter the opponent.

I guess I'm not clear

I guess I'm not clear on why this signals a negative/whistleblowing story about Alabama. I will be happy to eat crow if it turns out to be anything of true substance but methinks he is just drumming up interest in SI readers in something ultimately inconsequential.

Beat Louisville.

Beat Louisville.

Surely

This will give us an advantage.

Why?

Plan on enjoying your dinner and don't worry about it.

The only reasonable explanation

The only reasonable explanation for this loss is that there weren't enough threads devoted to getting the word out.

No

No they don't.  Ever.

/s

Are they really going to be wearing white pants with this?  I don't like the all-white look.

Damn it

I was going to write the ironic and expected "This will end well" post but was too late in opening the thread.  nm.

Poor Manti Te'o

#BeenThere

Yeah I feel like I've heard this before...

Not everybody's the perfect person in the world.  I mean everyone kills people, murders people, steals from you, steals from me, whatever.  I think that people need a second chance, and I've always looked up to Mike Vick, and I always will.

Regarding the Patriots

Denard and Brady on the same offense?  There are not enough ermahgerds to describe the ermahgerdiness.

(no subject)

Wooooooo!

Pat - you jumped too early, jerk!  Muah ha ha ha!

Mad props

Mad props to Matt Wile for coming in and making that longer field goal.  I don't think he's had any FG attempts during his time here and to hit that was absolutely clutch.

YES WOOOOO

I NEED A GIBBONS JERSEY. NOW.
