Xavier Simpson Career milestone tonight
I’m sure this will end up in the post game review and definitely in Brian’s review of the game, but congrats to Zavier Simpson. I’ve truly enjoyed watching him grow and develop over the last 3.5 seasons, and he’s a pleasure to watch with the ball in his hands.
Tonight, Zavier Simpson became the 4th Wolverine All-time with 1,000 points and 500+ career assists

Can I appreciate him here too??
February 19th, 2020 at 9:39 PM ^
You better!!!!
February 20th, 2020 at 6:07 AM ^
If you include Jeff Jackson as well.
February 19th, 2020 at 9:37 PM ^
Well deserved Captain!
February 19th, 2020 at 9:38 PM ^
X is the bomb. We ain't nothing without him.
Go Blue !!!
February 19th, 2020 at 9:41 PM ^
Grats to him! He's not a natural born shooter either; he's fought hard for every one of those points.
February 19th, 2020 at 9:43 PM ^
Did they say who the other three were? I haven't looked it up, but I'm going to guess Gary Grant, Rumeal Robinson, and Derrick Walton.
February 19th, 2020 at 10:23 PM ^
I believe it was Joubert instead of Walton
February 20th, 2020 at 11:01 AM ^
whoa, antoine joubert had 500 assists?
nobody who saw him in high school would've predicted THAT. he was about the biggest gunner you ever saw.
February 19th, 2020 at 10:51 PM ^
Sports reference says Walton had 499 assists. Ugh.
February 19th, 2020 at 10:58 PM ^
this comment caused WD to spend the next four months of his life going through all Walton's old game tape just to find him another
February 19th, 2020 at 10:58 PM ^
hey it worked for mercury morris that one year
...
no i'm not that old
February 20th, 2020 at 12:36 AM ^
Complete and utter sarcasm, but I guess that means Walton should've passed the ball against Oregon
/s
February 21st, 2020 at 5:35 PM ^
Does that mean it's NOT sarcasm?
February 19th, 2020 at 9:52 PM ^
So fitting that his 1000th point was scored on what had to be one of his most ridiculous hook shots. That was an all timer rivaling the one he hit against Maryland (over Bruno Fernando?) in one of the last couple years.
February 19th, 2020 at 9:57 PM ^
I remember that Maryland game where he had 4 or 5 hook shots. The Maryland crowd's reaction to each one of them is simply amazing. But yeah, the one against Fernando was heavily contested and definitely from the midrange, which makes it even crazier.

I'm old enough to remember when posters here wanted Simpson to transfer because he struggled and looked out of place as a true freshman.
MGoBlog wasn't around back when fans wanted Henson over Brady.
But the internet has evolved...
February 19th, 2020 at 11:23 PM ^
There were not a small number of posters just a month ago who couldn't wait for the Simpson era to be over. And just last week, the eternal Simpson hater outsidethebox called him the most overrated MBB player ever.
Most wins all-time. Final Four. Two big ten tourney titles. Never been eliminated before the sweet 16 (3/3). One of four M players ever with 1,000 points and 500 assists. And he's shooting 37% from three this year to boot! And that's not to even get into his defense or leadership.
February 20th, 2020 at 11:47 AM ^
I think he played very poorly for much of this season until the Illinois game at home. He was being reckless with the basketball, was shooting very poorly, was playing very undisciplined, and was unengaged defensively. I think his suspension and the underlying conduct kind of realigned his perspective a bit and refocused his energy. He has been spectacular for the last 6 games. Credit to him for righting the ship.
February 20th, 2020 at 12:09 PM ^
His assist : turnover ratio has been excellent this year. If he seems "reckless" with the ball it's just because we've been conditioned to John Beilein's extreme turnover avoidance. By normal standards he takes good care of the ball and is absolutely racking up the assists (8.0 per game!).
February 20th, 2020 at 2:34 PM ^
Ok. I don't think he played very well for much of the season, but he is playing excellent basketball right now.

The title is wrong. It needs to be Xavier Simpson Career milestone tonight appreciation thread POSBANG.
February 19th, 2020 at 11:00 PM ^
That running hook tonight... it was a statement. He’s been the general!
February 19th, 2020 at 11:43 PM ^
Been a different player since the suspension, was the appropriate punishment btw...pretty rare to bench a captain in this day and age
February 19th, 2020 at 11:51 PM ^
He is currently sitting at 444 rebounds. He has an outside chance at breaking 500 if he gets five per game and we have decently deep tournament runs. He would the first at Michigan ever to have 1000 points, 500 assists, and 500 boards.
February 20th, 2020 at 1:15 AM ^
Don’t look now but he’s got better numbers than Sparty Cash down the road.
I have a love/ hate relationship w him that he knows nothing about, but damn if he doesn’t keep on bulldogging his way into the record books.
APG X - 8.2 Cash - 5.7
RPG X - 4.3 Cash - 2.4
FG% - X - 47 Cash 42
And I think I read tonight X is shooting 37% from 3 and mighty Winston is 36%.
February 20th, 2020 at 10:19 AM ^
8.2 APG is insane
February 20th, 2020 at 8:13 AM ^
Recap writers are noting that the 1000pt mark was notably set with at time-expiring, sky hook over a big man. Yes, that is notable. However, it would have been perfect with Bill Raftery saying, "old time religion" for the X (SWIDT?) time in the game. That, or "ONIONS!"
February 20th, 2020 at 8:14 AM ^
His stats are actually more impressive than just points and assists. He’s the only UM player ever, and only the 4th B1G player ever with....
1,000 points
600 assists
450 rebounds
150 steals
February 20th, 2020 at 8:46 AM ^
Who are the other 3?
February 20th, 2020 at 11:14 AM ^
Jeff Horner, Tim Frazier, and Aaron Craft
February 20th, 2020 at 8:55 AM ^
Well, Xavier Simpson scored some of those points and dished out some assists, then so did Jeff Simpson. So does one guy get all the credit?

Great game by X!!
February 20th, 2020 at 9:38 AM ^
Wow, what a landmark achievement! Congrats Xavier!
February 20th, 2020 at 1:04 PM ^
A hard worker with a great work ethic. We'll miss him more after he graduates. Nice to see hard work pays off. Wishing him more success in his remaining Michigan career!
February 20th, 2020 at 1:28 PM ^
Z to the X is a part of the winningest class in school history and one of its greatest team leaders. With all his accolades, let’s say he leads us to a National Title, should we retire his number?
