Xavier Simpson Career milestone tonight

Submitted by IDKaGoodName on February 19th, 2020 at 9:31 PM

I’m sure this will end up in the post game review and definitely in Brian’s review of the game, but congrats to Zavier Simpson. I’ve truly enjoyed watching him grow and develop over the last 3.5 seasons, and he’s a pleasure to watch with the ball in his hands.

Tonight, Zavier Simpson became the 4th Wolverine All-time with 1,000 points and 500+ career assists

So fitting that his 1000th point was scored on what had to be one of his most ridiculous hook shots. That was an all timer rivaling the one he hit against Maryland (over Bruno Fernando?) in one of the last couple years.

I'm old enough to remember when posters here wanted Simpson to transfer because he struggled and looked out of place as a true freshman.

MGoBlog wasn't around back when fans wanted Henson over Brady.

But the internet has evolved...

There were not a small number of posters just a month ago who couldn't wait for the Simpson era to be over.  And just last week, the eternal Simpson hater outsidethebox called him the most overrated MBB player ever.

Most wins all-time.  Final Four.  Two big ten tourney titles.  Never been eliminated before the sweet 16 (3/3). One of four M players ever with 1,000 points and 500 assists. And he's shooting 37% from three this year to boot! And that's not to even get into his defense or leadership.

I think he played very poorly for much of this season until the Illinois game at home.  He was being reckless with the basketball, was shooting very poorly, was playing very undisciplined, and was unengaged defensively.  I think his suspension and the underlying conduct kind of realigned his perspective a bit and refocused his energy.  He has been spectacular for the last 6 games.  Credit to him for righting the ship.

His assist : turnover ratio has been excellent this year.  If he seems "reckless" with the ball it's just because we've been conditioned to John Beilein's extreme turnover avoidance.  By normal standards he takes good care of the ball and is absolutely racking up the assists (8.0 per game!).

Been a different player since the suspension, was the appropriate punishment btw...pretty rare to bench a captain in this day and age

He is currently sitting at 444 rebounds. He has an outside chance at breaking 500 if he gets five per game and we have decently deep tournament runs. He would the first at Michigan ever to have 1000 points, 500 assists, and 500 boards.

Don’t look now but he’s got better numbers than Sparty Cash down the road.

I have a love/ hate relationship w him that he knows nothing about, but damn if he doesn’t keep on bulldogging his way into the record books.
APG X - 8.2 Cash - 5.7

RPG X - 4.3 Cash - 2.4

FG% - X - 47 Cash 42

And I think I read tonight X is shooting 37% from 3 and mighty Winston is 36%.

Recap writers are noting that the 1000pt mark was notably set with at time-expiring, sky hook over a big man.  Yes, that is notable.  However, it would have been perfect with Bill Raftery saying, "old time religion" for the X (SWIDT?) time in the game. That, or "ONIONS!"

His stats are actually more impressive than just points and assists. He’s the only UM player ever, and only the 4th B1G player ever with....

1,000 points
600 assists
450 rebounds
150 steals

A hard worker with a great work ethic. We'll miss him more after he graduates. Nice to see hard work pays off. Wishing him more success in his remaining Michigan career!

Z to the X is a part of the winningest class in school history and one of its greatest team leaders. With all his accolades, let’s say he leads us to a National Title, should we retire his number?
