Why I want Brandon to hire the next coach
Here is my case why is it is better for DB to hire the next coach and then step down.
Schlissel has no experience with big time sports. He may select an AD with little background in big time sports. I believe the AD hired by Schlissel will be asked to bring a clean cut coach who is not going to embarrass the school. I do not think the mandate would be to go out there pay as much as you want and hire a dynamic coach that can win.
For example, if Jim Kelly, Urban and even Harbaugh were available, I do not believe the next AD would hire them -- too risky for Schlissel.
If DB is still around to hire the next coach, then I believe he will do whatever he can to bring a winner and money will be no problem (or almost). The next hire will be his legacy and he is as competitive as the next guy and will want to be remembered as a winner.
I think the best scenario would be for DB to stay for another year, bring a winner and then step down. I am very worried that the next AD would select a very conservative coach from a small time program (e.g., Ivy league).
Edit: My reference to Kelly, Urban or Harbaugh meant as examples of on field winners with some off field issues.

Man. I think I like some dumb stuff sometimes, but anything I've seen from Tim and Eric is just the stupidest stuff I've ever seen and I can't find it funny at all.

Why wouldn't you want the new AD to hire the new coach? He/she could have more experience hiring successful D1 coaches than Brandon.
It doesn't have to be the President.
...didn't think that one all the way through, did ya? Maybe we should take a break from immediately making threads with every thought that pops in our heads.

Hire Urban? hahaha what?

Can't tell if serious? Also, if Brandon is actually around to hire the new coach, it's very unlikely that he'd then step down next year. Especially if the coach is successful - then we'd probably be stuck with Brandon for a while to come.

I think the best scenario would be for DB to stay for another year, bring a winner and then step downI agree this is ideal, but what makes you think he could "bring a winner"? His idea of Michigan football is in the 70s and 80s, far behind modern college football. There is no reason to suggest he would not botch a second coaching search.

But bringing in a winner will be a higher priority for him than the next AD.
Yes, I am worried that he may stay around, but I doubt his contract will be renewed.
October 2nd, 2014 at 1:34 PM ^
I see. So a new AD replacing an old AD who was just fired for losing a lot won't be motivated to hire a winner. Makes perfect sense.

You are stooping to a level unrepresentative of the UofM. Just to be sure, I hold no preference against a student/non-student/alum/non-alum status, its OK to be specific and demanding, and even emotional if it makes you feel better, but you lose all respect for your intelligence and point of view by slinging mud.

Do you like being a National joke and losing to the Gophers and being out of the Big 10 title race after one BIG game?
Do you like having our AD throw our Heach Coach under the bus in front of the National Media?
His Legacy is Brady Hoke and it failed. He doesn't get a redo to sink us down any more.
October 2nd, 2014 at 1:37 PM ^
I want both gone. Hoke right now. My fear is the next AD may not be the kind of home run that we are hoping the president hits.
October 2nd, 2014 at 5:13 PM ^
Yeah, that makes total sense, especially given that all of the floated names have been extremely well-received. This isn't a college movie where the president just hates him some sports and decides to ruin the program. In real life, Schlissel might not be a sports guy, but that's part of the job at Michigan.

Yeah...no.
October 2nd, 2014 at 1:30 PM ^
Why do we assume that Schlissel would not engage advisors, consultants, and others in the selection process? He seems like a very bright guy - smart enough to know what's in and out of his own strike zone.
I'd like to see Brandon gone at a time that makes sense for the Athletic Department as a whole, so I don't think he necessarily needs to be broomed this week. But I'd like to see an AD with a proven track record of success (and experience at this job) managing the coach hiring process more than the likes of Brandon.
Here, it's better the devil we don't know than the devil we do.
October 2nd, 2014 at 1:35 PM ^
consultants and so on. But the mandate will come from him. Even if a dynamic AD is hired, the manadate or at least the parameters will be set by the president. In particular, I am worried if this president will give the AD the freedom to spend the kind of money that he has to spend to a get a great coach.
October 2nd, 2014 at 1:41 PM ^
as president of one of the great universities in the world, he will do what is right with that in mind.
October 2nd, 2014 at 1:47 PM ^
You state that "at least the parameters will be set by" Schlissel. I'm not sure what this means, though. Sure, Schlissel may give some general guidelines, but it seems his advisory team would source the candidates and make a business case for each candidate. That business case would likely include the following factors, among others:
- Integrity
- Experience
- Ability to relate to alumni and donors
- Track record of success
- Management style
- References or other professional reviews
- Business savvy in an academic environment
It is a far different thing to evaluate a proposal than to go out and source a candidate on your own. I can't see any basis to determine that Schlissel is not up to the task of reviewing the business cases for candidates with his advisors, and making a prudent decision. And I suspect any candidate that gets in front of him will beat Brandon on all or nearly all of these measures.
