Which player is your pick to have a breakout season next year?

Submitted by FrankMurphy on

Mine is Devin Asiasi. He was one of our best blockers outside the O-line this season, which is impressive because blocking is typically what incoming freshman TEs struggle with the most. The only reason he didn't get more touches is because he was playing behind Jake Butt, the best TE in the country. We all know how much Harbaugh loves TEs and Asiasi has gushed about how great a mentor Jake Butt has been and how much he has learned from him.

On the defensive side of the ball, aside from Rashan Gary who is pretty much expected to be the top breakout performer and star of the defense next year, I think LaVert Hill will surprise a lot of people with Jourdan-esque play and will minimize the dropoff in pass defense.

Who do you have your eye on as next season's breakout performer, MGoBloggers?

Kekoa Crawford.

We're losing both of our staring wide receivers. Either Crawford or Nate Johnson are going to be the primary receiver. Crawford saw the field more this year than anyone else that isn't a slot-type receiver.

who will have a breakout season.

But if I could pick, I would pick three offensive linemen to have big breakout seasons.

Cole and Bredeson are a good core.

Need some guys like Onwenu, Dawson, Spanellis, Kugler, Ulizio, etc, to have breakout seasons.

while the big man has had his hype train full steam ahead for some time, there aren't stats or even much playing time to back it up.

With our resident Robot Viking leaving to the NFL, I at least hope he breaks out and that hype train reaches it's ticketed destination, because we don't have anyone behind him.

I think Khaleke Hudson could really break out next season. We all saw him blocking punts and wrecking guys on special teams this season but think he could get some real run at Safety next year.

I can't wait to see him come up from the safety spot and hit a running back at the line of scrimmage with a full head of steam.

I want to say Wilton Speight but I think we'll be ahead in most of our games so won't even be throwing it.

I say the OLINE wakes up is dominant and the RB's have their day.

On defense the big breakout performer is Winovich off the edge(if you ignore Gary which is the duh).  They focus on Gary w/ TE help and he gets singles on the opposite side and just outworks his OT consistantly(while Gary overpowers two on the other side).

Big Mike Onwenu....

UM's struggles to get a push from its Oline are over....Mike will push the entire Dline all by himself if nec.

Not to take anything away from Peppers but Hudson is almost that same body.

If I get a second choice it would be WheatJr.  I recall him blowing several defensemen off the ball in the UFRs.

Bonderman worked on his change-up in the offseason. Branden Dawson worked on his jumper. Jason Maxiell lost 30 pounds in the offseason (again). Durrell Summers "gets it" now.

I was ready to jump right in with Devin and will just endorse you rather than make it my claim. I do, though, think this could be interesting and allow for a "New England" like thing given the fact that young Wheatley looked quite impressive himself. But in the spirit of participation, I will guess that Evans will continue to build on his somewhat impressive rookie campaign.

Given that we lose 4 guy who will get drafted in the first two rounds (Taco, Butt, Lewis, Jabrill) and a few more likey mid-round picks( Glasgow, Stribling, Wormley, Darboh and Jehu), not to mention a few linemen and Dymonte who might get picked up, I hope that we have SEVERAL breakout players.

At corner, I am looking for Levert Hill to step right in along side Jeremy Clark (plz 6th year).  While that pairig isn't quite Lewis / Stribling, it certainly has the potential to be VERY good.

On the DL, I think Gary is the clear answer.  I expect him to DESTROY OL next year to set up some hype going into this 3rd and likely last season in 2018.  He and Hurst (plz come back) alone would give us a scary pass rush.

At WR, while Perry will likely step up some, I expect that most of the lost Darboh production will be made up by our many TE.  In particular, I expect the Kai-Ju combo to be a scary receiving threat.  I could see us rolling with the 2-TE set as our base package.  THink Gronk and Hernandez without the murder.

At RB, we have so many bodies, but it would be nice to finally see one guy emerge and become a dominant every-down back.  I think Evans has the most big play potential, but I expect that Harbaugh would split his reps with a larger back - perhaps the forgotten Kareem Walker??  (Caveat:  If we manage to snag Harris, he is my pick for team break-out star).

Finally, if I had to guess who our team star will be, I know that many will not agree, but I am going with big Wilton.  He had a number of games this season where he showcased not just his arm, but his poise and ability to make his second and third reads.  Not every game, obviously.  But keep in mind, that Wilton was only in his first year starting.  I expect him to make a huge jump next year, and if he does, he could be a serious candidate for team star.

Couple of picks, but here are mine:

Gary - This is his (and Hurst's if he comes back) defensive line next year. He will be stepping into a full-time, every down kind of role. He did a lot even when playing in a 8-10 man rotation this year. He is going to be THE GUY next year. He'll be bigger, faster, and stronger. Left tackles beware.

Bush Jr. - We have a bit of a depth issue at LB next year, but Bush looks like he can be a sideline to sideline kind of guy. Something we haven't had at the position in quite some time. And my dear lord, that kid hits hard.

Asiasi - made the most he could with the time he was given this year. He's going to be tough to bring down next year, with another year in the system and in a college weight room.

Gary is going to be the law next year. He has to learn lane discipline and so on like all young linemen, especially athletic freaks, but he was already good this year. The next answers had better be a cornerback, a safety, 2-3 offensive linemen, a couple receivers, and a linebacker or two or we're gonna have problems. I'm assuming that Jeremy Clark gets his 6th year or else Michigan State has naked pictures of the mother of whoever makes those decisions at the NCAA. When you brazenly give a player practice squad player of the week and then apply for a 6th year and get it, you pretty much own the NCAA office in that regard.
