Well-thrown protest towels appreciation

Submitted by BlowGoo on October 27th, 2019 at 12:47 AM

Felt compelled to applaud the shower of yellow towels thrown in protest after ND's touchdown, scored after ridiculous Pass Interference robbed us of an interception.

Special mention to the towel that landed and stayed on the receiver's helmet.

Also to the towel that landed on the camera, blocking the end of the ND touchdown celebration.

Just perfect.

And the one at O'Neill's mug

In the "hindsight is 20/20 category," I thought it would have been a great idea to bring in a quarter cup of kidney beans in the bottom of each pocket, and a rubber band to tie it off, and throw some real flags onto the field. I'm guessing they won't be doing this promotion again.

We should've been.

Because ALL of us would've been going nuts if our guys were getting wet towels thrown at them in Columbus against OSU.

That shit isn't cute...it's not that someone could get hurt, I'm not that guy - it's just a bad look.

We absolutely should've been penalized. Because now every drunk idiot is going to think it's okay to throw crap on the field.

Yeah, I know, marshmallows...these kids weren't even alive when we were doing that.

Stop throwing wet towels on the field and stop the "you suck, bitch." Everything else is fair game...but those two things are bad looks and the latter is cringeworthy after every 3rd down stop.

Scream, yell, make fun of opposing players, I don't give a shit when you curse...but the who chant is awful. If it was just some "YOU SUCK, BITCH!" that got picked up by a field mic...I'd probably laugh.

But be clear, if this was us at OSU...there would be everything from 6 threads about how OSU students are "classless" to a petition.org to have OSU forfeit the game.

Every OSU kickoff has the students chant "O-H-I-O RIP HIS FUCKING HEAD OFF" Did you know that? They've done it for years and no one cares that they are cheering for injury.

I don't mind calling people bitches, especially when those people are Brian Kelly and Mike Dantini. Big House hasn't been intimidating in decades. Nothing wrong with having an edge like every other big ten team (firsthand experience of open intimidation by OSU and MSU fans, cheers for injuries by Nebraska and Wisconsin fans)

I don't think fans throwing things can get flagged.  And this goes back many years.

Penn State fans pelted our players with snowballs in 1995.  And it wasn't because of a blown call by the refs.  It was because Mercury Hayes, Amani Toomer and Ed Davis had the nerve to be close to the PSU student section.  This continued and continued until JoePa literally ran over to tell the students to knock it off.  There was no flag.

And anyone remember the seat cushion incidents in the 89 Rose Bowl?  When USC went up 14-3 at the half, Trojan fans (sensing a blowout) threw their seat cushions on to the field to...I don't know, express their "badassery?"  When we retook the lead in the 4th quarter, Michigan fans retaliated and threw their seat cushions on to the field, holding up the PAT by several minutes.  There's no penalty.  It just delays the game.

Normally I would agree that throwing things on the field is dumb but I honestly didn't care about the towels.  John Oneil clearly wanted to get ND back in the game and they robbed us of a clear and clean interception that was in NO WAY a pass iterference.  Fuck those refs.  And fuck Notre Dame.

I was just about to post this. I hate blaming the refs but that PI call was despicable, and then to turn around and review that catch 2 SECONDS AFTER the ball was snapped was horseshit. Towels deserved to be thrown for that.

Awesome how the crowd just kept booing , but towel throwing doesn’t bode well as it could have yielded a penalty, and it will pretty much mark the end of that promotional item which is a shame since UM never does anything to generate atmosphere in the stadium.

Would be totally fine with that. Rally towels are a bad promotion that add nothing to the atmosphere and were being completely ignored up until that point. The first thing I thought was "hell yeah, maybe now we can go back to pom poms or get a real maize out with some damn T-shirts like everyone else."

Obviously tonight they worked out incredibly well, but one would hope it needn't come to that again.

Michigan Difference. I'm a student (though didn't throw anything) and everyone figured out quickly that tying them in a knot really reduced the wind resistance and made it easier to throw further. Poor OSU students would be sitting there trying to throw pieces of paper into the wind and getting mad when they fly back and hit them in the face

Agreed. The towel throwing needed done. That PI call was totally egregious. Would have gladly joined in if I had been in attendance. Also...Fuck John O'Neill.

Booing is fine and hilarious but throwing shit on the field is stupid, trashy, and embarrassing. I'd expect this in Columbus, not in Ann Arbor. They were still throwing shit on the field in the 4th.

I'm surprised there was no penalty for it, I'm assumed they announced to not throw shit on the field at the game. They showed the coaches / players telling fans not to do it.
