Upper Peninsula tour-Say Ya To Da U.P. Eh?
"Over 140 players and coaches packed into six buses to make a journey across Michigan over the past week. Friday concluded their adventure with a visit to five different places across three counties."
. . . .
“We only have 10 players that have ever stepped foot in the U.P. before this,” Ablauf said. “We thought this trip would be a great educational opportunity as well as a lot of fun.”
And who does not like Oswald's Bear Ranch?
“We started off Friday by going to the Soo Locks, then up to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. Then we came down to Tahquamenon Falls and now we are here at Oswald’s Bear Ranch.”
Well that’s just great… Bears!?
Now they’re putting the whole team in jeopardy.
As I recall, the bears at Oswald's are in enclosed habitats for the most part, but yeah, otherwise it's an interesting way to mentally prepare for some of the better offensive and defensive lines in the conference.
Great quote, great movie
Cal must be joining the B1G.
UCLA already coming!
I am leaving this morning to head to the U.P. for a few days. I planned this three weeks ago. Tomorrow’s itinerary: Tahquamenon Falls, Oswald’s Bear Ranch and the boat tour of Pictured Rocks. Why couldn’t I have planned to leave 48 hours earlier?
Also headed UP NORT this morning. Munising, Mackinaw and the Garden Peninsula.
Ah, my uncle (grew up in a house that was literally on Lake Superior) would say to me,
You should "Come up Nort!"
He frequently dropped the the word "to". It was "we go store", "we go Eagle Harbor"
Driving up to the other side (the Keweenaw) from Chicago a week from now. With as gross as this week looks like it'll be from a heat and humidity standpoint I'll need it.
Heading up to Copper Harbor tomorrow
Pro tip (for you, "Uferfan" and for everyone):
Purchase the Pictured Rocks Boat tickets at least a day or two ahead of time. If you show up at the ticket window without taking this step, your chances of getting on a boat that same day are practically nil (not that NIL), especially if you have a certain part of the day you wish to ride. I've done both a mid-morning and the sunset ride and they're vastly different because of sun angles.
Plan also on a future trip during the fall color season. BEAUTIFUL!
My dad is from Munising. Been going up since I was a little guy. Grandfather built a cabin on Mirror Lake in 1969. Still go up to that cabin. And I was up there when the boys were in town. BUT I had no clue. Ticked I didn’t go into town to see the team.
A real trip to the UP would involve a stop at one of the many pleasant settlements:
1) Stopping at the IGA for bread and lotto ticket
2) Gassing up at the Leonard Station
3) Getting jacked at one of the two bars...
You can find "You know you're a Yooper when ..." lists all over the internet. My favorite item (not likely unique to Yooper lists): "You've started a home remodeling project with a chainsaw."
My friend in college had a muffler fall off his jeep. We used a coat hanger to fix that problem.
later he lost the keys to it, so we configured it to start with a screwdriver. This was all at MTU so UP.
Please tell me they hit Clyde's when they went to the UP. A trip across the bridge wouldn't be complete without it.
West Pier in the Soo is even better imho having had both multiple times !
Oh hell yes! West Pier has the messiest tastiest sloppiest drippiest burgers in the entire UP---IF you can find the place. It's well worth the search, though!
I love them both (and I've been to all three Clyde's Drive-Ins) but West Pier is too well hidden at the Soo while Clyde's in St Ignace is practically a landmark as soon as you cross the Mighty Mac.
A trip to the UP with out a pastie, is not a trip to the UP
A pasty is a delicious folded pastry with a savory filling. A pastie is a wardrobe accessory for exotic dancers.
His statement still holds...
And “pasties” are the plural of both.
They were originally Cornish meat pies, Cornish miners having immigrated from Cornwall’s tin mines to the UP copper mines like my great grandpa.
AND the food was probably originally spelled “pastie” before pearl- clutchers insisted on the orthographical distinction to protect their sensitive eyes from hint of ecdysiastic association.
Meanwhile it must be exceedingly rare for anyone to refer to a singular article of clothing,so to speak, as A “pastie.” As I understand it, they usually come in pairs.
Ha! I love your overly pedantic response; it is quite ironic. The plural of pasty, of course, is pasties. That is not germane to this conversation, however. Try to think of an instance where someone might use the singular pastie - it might be a fun thought experiment!
I usually try to avoid arguing here. It's a useless exercise.
But my comedy genes kick in: my reply was not overly pedantic, it was deliberately êxcessive verbiage as a joke. Not a great joke necessarily but a fairly common type of humor.
Like "ecdysiasts," a totally made-up word as a joking, pretend way of seeming highbrow to refer to strippers. (Actually, I thought that "ecdysiast" would be a clue. Guess not.)
From a proudly Upper Peninsula family (long before they were called Yoopers). AND a family whose holiday dinners were not turkey but each of us eating our own pastie.
I gave it a +1 and a -.1 No net upvote because it was a a good thought but then there's that incorrect (but humorous) pasty misspelling.
And how, humorously or not, do you spell two of them?
“Pastys” looks like a disease.
Due to your strong Yooper credentials, I bow to your pasty expertise.
PASTIES!
I just today learned that one of the Top Ten best pasty (sp?) places in the state is in Midland!
(Shier's. Fresh pasties on Wednesdays, frozen other days.)
I swear my first reaction reading this was "What the hell is a Beer Ranch?!"
And where can I find one?
"Over 140 packed into six buses?"
We hauled 300+ in the MMB in six buses. I don't think "packed" is the appropriate term. But the football team definitely deserves better treatment than we got: they generate millions upon millions. I am not complaining, I just found the line funny. I hope they are having a great time, making great memories, and learning what a great place the state of Michigan is in so many ways.
I think when you take into account the average size of a trumpeter and the average size of an offensive lineman, the numbers just about equal out.
Don't forget the trombonists!
^^^my son in a meme that's now been in circulation for several years. When I just now googled "join band they said" his meme was the first one to show up on Pinterest and a couple other meme websites.
rob f: A delightful exception to the general rule that trombone players are chick-magnets extraordinaire. I suspect a considerable amount of Photoshopping.
LOL, but no---that's 100% my son. He stands 2" taller than dad and outweighed me by 80-90 lbs as a high school senior (I was a 155 lb middle distance runner my senior year).
He did play a few years of football, but as his cousins described him back then, a big "teddy 🧸 bear".
Agreed. Trumpet players are a pack of sissies. Low brass, on the other hand, tend toward the svelte yet muscular. Don't bother looking it up. I have fact-checked it already.
In all fairness, most college football players, especially the linemen can almost count as 2 people due to extreme height and mass. haha
The UPs a great place for a summer trip. Too bad it's so hard to get to for an ex-Michigander like me
we had a family vacation in Cedarville/Hessel area a few years back. I flew from LAX to MSP to ANJ (Sault Ste. Marie), turned out to be a great option. Pretty interesting to go from a bohemith like LAX to a few gates at the Sault.
Now you can see the benefits of home schooling.. they got a great education in history, geography, science and if they write about their experience they can get credit for English... probably some math in there too
What? This is not home schooling. Jim Harbaugh isn’t their dad.
These are students at a public university that took an extended field trip.
I broadly agree with your point but in this particular instance your statement is quite a stretch.
If they don’t stop at Clyde’s it doesn’t count.
Besides Clyde's, also Lehto's Pasties, Four Suns Fish & Chips/Peterson Fish Market (at the top of the hill in Hancock, near Quincy Copper Mine), Dogpatch (Munising), Brown's Fisheries (Paradise), Esther's Authentic Mexican Cuisine (Drummond Island), Yooperman's Bar &Grill (Goetzville), and so many other wonderful UP eateries.
When I go in the summer it’s with family so I don’t hit the bars but when I used to go snowmobiling in the winter we’d hit them all .. a beer and a pickled egg.... last went in the 90s
Lehtos is the filet mignon of pasties
do one thing and do it well
I have four in the freezer right now. We bought them on the way back down from a trip to MTU/Copper Country.
Dogpatch is good, but we always hit up Buckhorn. Their per his the best in town. Although it was $21 a plate last week. That hurt some.
Oswald’s is a wonderful place, it’s such a shame that PETA is constantly harassing them with lawsuits and trying to shut them down and bankrupt them
Ask the bears how wonderful it is.
