The article on the front page of ESPN.com actually has an update on McCarthy. I did not see this particular update posted in the JJ McCarthy injury message board topic and it as further down the page, so thought I would post it here. It basically says his arm is sore. Doctors were consulted. He is resting his arm and there is a short term and long term plan in place. Should not impact season as of now.

It is clearly a wait and see approach, as the comment was "should not impact season as of now". Obviously not being able to practice for sure is not a good thing.

Not practicing in Spring, while not the optimal situation, isn't going to preclude him from getting better. He can still review film, be involved in installs and go through mental reps.

Spring is ALWAYS the time to get players healed up. No reason to push something this far away from the season.

So it says “will not require surgery”, yet there’s a short term option and long term option.  It’s hard to imagine what the long term option would be if it isn’t surgery.

Lingering arm soreness this long after the season is definitely a concern.  Could be something he does in his mechanics that are stressing something in the shoulder.  You have to think short term options are changing mechanics, PT, and not throwing every single ball with maximum velocity.  All I know is that players seem to have poor outcomes with lingering injuries where surgery is delayed.  So hopefully he really doesn’t need surgery, rather than “let’s see if we can get away with not doing surgery”.

"which will not require surgery"

I'm good with this and have no doubt that the kid has the drive to do everything he can to get back on the field. We'll be fine.

I don’t know how anyone can act like this doesn’t impact his chances in the QB battle. Missing spring ball and not throwing for at least a couple months is a big deal when you’re attempting to win a QB competition against a returning starter on a defending B1G championship team.

As a seasoned Michigan fan and alum, my response is one of total despair. I declare 2:50pm = 5:00pm and am now going to drink myself into oblivion as I mourn the loss of yet another potential shining star. Through my tears, I shall repeatedly watch JJ racing down the sideline into the endzone on Y__t___....

Well, that's my excuse for drinking early this afternoon.

The short term plan is to get him drunk.

The long term plan is to then remove the arm and replace it with a literal cannon.

"Arm soreness" could still mean shoulder in Harbaughspeak.

I'm not comforted by the "let's let it rest" approach.  Not that I like surgery, but at least with surgery there is usually a diagnosis and a recovery timetable.  This leaves it up in the air, and could mean anything from "he'll be fine" to "he'll need surgery this summer and will miss the season."

Probably an over use problem. He was trying to break his personal long pass record of a 102 yards. Don't over use the cannon. 20 yard passes can be just as good!

Not sure many will see this as it is off the front page and I am a day late and a dollar short, however in this clip of Harbaugh's presser, he states that JJ is not throwing, but is still practicing. JH says this right at the end of the clip.

Not putting a lot on spring practice. No way he was going to overtake Cade in 15 practices. The summer workouts and informal practices with his teammates will be what makes a difference when summer camp begins.
