UM vets praise freshmen in presser
Players were allowed to speak to reporters after practice and spent much of it talking up the freshmen:
Both De'Veon Smith and Drake Johnson both mentioned Chris Evans as sticking out.
— Josh Henschke (@JoshHenschke) August 17, 2016
Mason Cole also praised Evans, says he really knows his stuff.
— Josh Henschke (@JoshHenschke) August 17, 2016
Drake Johnson, who is roomies with Evans, says he's "mad athletic" and smooth. Makes them say "wow."
— Josh Henschke (@JoshHenschke) August 17, 2016
Evans is going to play, folks.
— Josh Henschke (@JoshHenschke) August 17, 2016
Ty Isaac mentioned Eddie McDoom and Nate Johnson. McDoom can "fly"
— Josh Henschke (@JoshHenschke) August 17, 2016
Magnuson says 'everything is advanced' with Rashan Gary. Says only Peppers impressed him more as a frosh.
— Nick Baumgardner (@nickbaumgardner) August 17, 2016
De'Veon says he's beyond impressed by Rashan Gary: 'But I'm not about to lose to a teenager (in pass pro)'
— Nick Baumgardner (@nickbaumgardner) August 17, 2016
I, for one, am ready to see Chris Evans do Chris Evans things.
August 17th, 2016 at 8:25 PM ^
Well, kinda
August 17th, 2016 at 10:03 PM ^
I expect Evans to shows us flashes as a freshman and then become a star as a sophomore.
August 18th, 2016 at 8:19 AM ^
You're drunk. Don't hold your breath on that comparison

August 18th, 2016 at 7:26 PM ^
... except faster.
August 17th, 2016 at 8:26 PM ^
The lack of speed on offense has been around (other than Denard and maybe a couple other individuals) since... man, idk, a long time. Will be nice to have more speed in the coming years!
August 17th, 2016 at 9:03 PM ^
More looking forward to some speed on defense.
How many times have we watched good spread teams with good dual threat QBs just completely have their way with a Michigan defense?

I agree in part, though I'd say we've had pretty good speed on D... except for the LBers not named Ryan, Jake. That positions looks to have a nice speed upgrade with the recruits Dr. Blitz is bringing in.
August 18th, 2016 at 8:31 AM ^
You spelled JMFR wrong
August 18th, 2016 at 8:32 AM ^
I don't think Clark has that kind of speed
August 18th, 2016 at 7:13 AM ^
We've had speed on defense. Just to name a few returning players:
Wormley is damn fast for a man his size.
Lewis and Peppers are both 4.35-4.4 "dudes."
Dymonte Thomas and Jeremy Clark are in that 4.45-4.5 range.
As mentioned, the LB group (exception Ryan) is the only spot we've lacked in speed during recent years.
August 17th, 2016 at 9:19 PM ^
Aside from Denard, I feel like the last true "speed" player on offense was Breaston, and before him was... Anthony Carter???
August 17th, 2016 at 9:27 PM ^
Tyrone Wheatley?

more skills than I, make a picture/gif of Mario making ham...
August 17th, 2016 at 10:31 PM ^
Okay I'll give you Desmond.
August 18th, 2016 at 10:13 AM ^
Not Wheatley? He still holds the Class B state record in the 110 hurdles at 13.7 seconds, and was All-B1G and All-American in track while at Michigan.
If you doubt Wheatley's speed, look at the first play from scrimmage of this clip:
August 17th, 2016 at 9:39 PM ^
Derrick Alexander
Edit: I get your point though, they are few and far between.
August 17th, 2016 at 10:08 PM ^
Woodson was decent.
August 18th, 2016 at 6:58 AM ^
Jehu Chesson?
August 18th, 2016 at 8:24 AM ^
Carlos Brown was super fast but had the balance of a drunken flamingo.
August 18th, 2016 at 1:47 PM ^
I can understand if the RR/Hoke years were so brutal they caused you to forget Carlos Brown, Daryl Stonum and James Rogers, but how can you forget Tyrone Wheatley, Braylon Edwards and Mercury Hayes?
August 17th, 2016 at 8:29 PM ^
The best players will play.
August 17th, 2016 at 8:30 PM ^
Evans gets on campus and is instantly impressing everyone with his freak athleticism and insane speed, which pretty much backs up what we all saw on his film. So how was this kid only rated as a fringe 4 star recruit?
August 17th, 2016 at 8:33 PM ^
Level of competition or maybe he didn't do the typical camp circuit???
Sent from MGoBlog HD for iPhone & iPad
August 17th, 2016 at 8:53 PM ^
Can't be level of competition. He played at Indianapolis Ben Davis, perennial power in Indiana's biggest football division. Lots of talent.

August 17th, 2016 at 8:45 PM ^
Well if he were rated 3-stars he'd have gone to Lansing because, you know ...
August 17th, 2016 at 8:59 PM ^
Too much CGI in his fim.
August 17th, 2016 at 9:04 PM ^
Wasn't he the guy that osu tried to flip at the end? If so, their recent rb record has been quite impressive as well.

August 17th, 2016 at 9:17 PM ^
Yes, but they offered him as a DB only, and he cited that as well as the fact that he was basically an after thought to them as reasons he had no interest, even though early on he stated they were his favorite school.
August 18th, 2016 at 9:57 AM ^
Size. Guys like him and Stevie Breaston are seen as slight and those with big bodies and height get all the stars. Plus, Indiana as a state isn't seen as good as Cali, Florida, Texas, Penn, or Ohio. Bigger kids from these schools (and NJ) are going to get the higher rankings. Small gap between 4s and high 3s.
Oh, and he hasn't played yet and ratings aren't exact.

Since I requested my thread deleted....
From Nick Baumgardner:
Everything about Rashan Gary is 'advanced,' Michigan teammates say
http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/index.ssf/2016/08/michigan_players_say_…
De'Veon says he's beyond impressed by Rashan Gary: 'But I'm not about to lose to a teenager (in pass pro)'
Asked De'Veon Smith if Chris Evans can bring a spread look to this team: 'I could see that.'
Magnuson says 'everything is advanced' with Rashan Gary. Says only Peppers impressed him more as a frosh.
Magnuson says the LT job isn't locked up yet. TBD. Bushell-Beatty making a push there.
Erik Magnuson says Dave Dawson has impressed him in camp. He's been a different player. Getting run w/ the 1's
Magnuson said he's (Bredeson) rotating in with the 1's plenty.
From Angelique chengelis:
Magnuson praised frosh OL Bredeson, said all OL freshmen "have been very impressive. It’s very strange to see how good they are (already)”
Magnuson said of Rashan: "he’s one of the fastest defensive linemen we have. ... Rashan has a lot of raw talent.”
Magnuson hasn't seen a freshman like Rashan since Peppers. He noted they went to same HS; "’I don’t know what’s happening in New Jersey.”
From Chris Balas:
Eddie mcdoom. Remember that name. As though you could forget it. Teammates say he is a burner
Chris Evans.... Shifty fast and deceptive per teammates
From Mark Snyder:
Erik Magnuson said left tackle is up for grabs right now with Newsome, Juwann Bushell-Beatty among them. David Dawson emerging at guard.
From Josh Henschke:
Both De'Veon Smith and Drake Johnson both mentioned Chris Evans as sticking out.
Mason Cole also praised Evans, says he really knows his stuff.
Drake Johnson, who is roomies with Evans, says he's "mad athletic" and smooth. Makes them say “wow."
Ty Isaac mentioned Eddie McDoom and Nate Johnson. McDoom can "fly"

No worries about the other thread - to both OPs, thanks for doing this incidentally. It is a little much sometimes when all the individual tweets become threads of their own sometimes, so hopefully this mitigates some of that. Much easier to digest than the tidbits from practice as they come in real time. It also makes my job here just a shade easier, so admittedly there is a selfish motivation here.
August 17th, 2016 at 8:47 PM ^
Thanks for the recap.
August 18th, 2016 at 1:18 AM ^
Thanks
August 17th, 2016 at 8:33 PM ^
Hmm more tidbits from the submarine. Wasn't expecting that. I wonder if this is Harbaugh's way of playing nice with the media for possibly overreacting a tad the other day without actually apologizing.
August 17th, 2016 at 8:37 PM ^
Harbaugh couldn't give a shit or a fuck about appeasing the media.
August 17th, 2016 at 10:30 PM ^
My thinking was that maybe Warde had another "conversation" with him and having the players speak was a compromise. But no you're absolutely right. Mea culpa.
August 18th, 2016 at 2:53 AM ^
It's nothing more than this is the 2nd year...he knows what type of team he has.
People are over thinking the limited access vs. the no access.
In year 1 you're trying to use every second to get to know your players, set a culture, remain focused, etc.
You can't do that every year...it's just too much, you don't have that fear of newness.
But he's still locked things down more than 99% of other schools around the country. It's just compared to last year this is a flood of availability.
August 18th, 2016 at 6:45 AM ^
Who was Warde Manuel's head coach at Michigan? Do you honestly believe that head coach gave a flying crap about the media?
August 18th, 2016 at 6:57 AM ^
Who was Warde Manuel's head coach at Michigan? Do you honestly believe that head coach gave a flying crap about the media? So why would Manuel issue so much as peep to Harbaugh? This is a complete fucking non-issue that professional pearl-clutchers in the sports media are trying to gin up into something worth mentioning. Fuck Murphy and fuck Snyder.
August 17th, 2016 at 11:27 PM ^
Or a damn, don't forget damn
August 17th, 2016 at 8:38 PM ^
The asshole who couldn't stop asking the same question after Harbaugh didn't answer it the first 3 times deserved to get closed out. The rest of the media can blame him for the abrupt end.
August 17th, 2016 at 11:08 PM ^
was the Freep's Mark Snyder. Color me unsurprised.
August 17th, 2016 at 11:31 PM ^
Snyder asked the first two times, the last time, coming from the opposite side of the room, was some ESPN guy whose name I didn't recognize. According to the Michigan Insider podcast anyway.
August 17th, 2016 at 11:40 PM ^
Fucker's name is Dan Murphy. And of course he stormed off to write an article on ESPN right after.
Take a look at his picture. Looks like a fucking douche.
August 18th, 2016 at 2:29 AM ^
Then he should spend his time learning about football instead of mastering ventriloquism.
August 17th, 2016 at 8:38 PM ^
The thing I most wanted to hear out of camp other than "everyone's healthy" was something about the young OL making a serious push to challenge for a spot in the 1s or at least a lot of time. So I suppose I am happy now.
Huh.
It's nice. But I'd be a lot happier with actual football.
