I agree, they are quite impressive given his size. They speak of a knoweldge of the position, but say nothing of his ability to coach it. I want to see a clip that pairs his runs with some of his students' runs. Now that would be meaningful.

You're right, of course - I was just rying to be a bit playful with the possibility of having Wheatley on staff here. It seems to me that he's held his own in coaching the position so far, and it would be exciting to have another huge name in Michigan football back in Ann Arbor again.

http://www.nytimes.com/1997/07/25/sports/finally-wheatley-is-eager-to-p…
"Officially, Tyrone Wheatley played in 14 games for the Giants a year ago. But the talented and enigmatic running back will tell you differently.
''I quit after the fifth game,'' Wheatley said today between practices at the Giants' training camp. ''I shouldn't have given up, but I did. That was it for the rest of the season. I was done.
''I tried my hardest whenever I was on the field, but everywhere else I had a blow-it-off attitude. I had been given this 'bad apple' label and I broke down. I didn't care. It affected everything else I did. But I have no one to blame but myself. I didn't deserve to be called a bad apple but I should have had thicker skin.''"
"But in the last two seasons, Wheatley has earned a reputation for being unenthusiastic, with stories of him falling asleep in meetings, missing treatment for injuries and botching assignments on the field. In response, Dan Reeves, the former Giants coach, used Wheatley sparingly and shunned any opportunity to give him praise."
That said, the article states he turned things around with the Giants.

He didn't turn it around with the Giants--he turned it around with Oakland, where he had 3 very good years.
I'm willing to bet some of his family issues affected his time with the Giants.

These types of stories make me support him more - they speak of a self-awareness and willingness to learn from mistakes. Embedded in which is knowledge of what it looks like to not put forth one's best effort and the feelings that are driving that. Its bad experience coupled with being willing and self-aware enough to learn from them that will help him be a good coach.
In other words, stories like this should sell you more on Wheatley.

...but inside this news fills my heart with rainbows and butterflies.

JH was gonna load up the staff with a bunch of former teammates and a bit too much entitlement (a little like Tram had when he had Gibson and Parrish on staff). My concern was clearly misplaced and I hope he hires Wheatley. We were hearing early talk of Andy Moeller for o-line. Anyone hear anything about this recently?

He would be a huge get for this staff.

For those of you young 'uns who apparently don't know of Wheatley other than as a runner on video: he was not only a very talented runner (big/fast) but he's got quite the personal background. Father died when he was very young (like 2), lived with an aunt because his mother had continuing problems. Step-father died too as I recall. Took care of his half and/or step siblings, starting when he was in Ann Arbor. Of all of Michigan's running backs over the years, he's my favorite, and I'd be almost as happy having him back as I am having Harbaugh back.

a good friend of mine played against him in high school. He played QB for Crestwood and would always tell the story about how he threw 2 touchdown passes to Wheatley when Crestwood played Robichaud. That's right two pick 6's in one game, he said he was a man among boys in high school.
My personal best memory of him was during the Penn State game at the Big House in 1994, when he scored twice in the 3rd quarter to put Michigan back into the game. When he scored the 2nd touchdown he did the Superman pose right in front us in the north end-zone. This was just before the "Miami" rule. Needless to say, the crowd went wild, that my friends is something I will never forget...
It would be awesome to have him back here coaching Derrick Green, Ty Issac, and hopefully Mike Weber...

IMHO, It is probably the right at the top of the prettiest and most dominant runs ever by a Michigan back.

Wheatley recruited Detroit for Syracuse so he knows the landscape. Successful position coach and recruiter there.
Obviously the pro background and recent coaching with Buffalo have him quite current in terms of what he has to offer.

a dad on the sidelines as part of the coaching staff and what kind of an affect that would have. It seems like a natural fit with a high profile M football alum returning, however whats somewhat disconcerting is that the younger Wheatley doesn't seem really interested in Michigan unless his dad is part of the coaching staff.

If Ty comes and brings Jr. with him, in conjunction with a commitment from CT TE Chris Clark, JH's dream of turning Michigan into TE University takes a giant leap forward!
I'm thankful for three things these days; my God, the ease in which I still get erections, and JH coaching Michigan!
