Despite the obvious disappointment of losing Coach Durkin and having to play and recruit against him on the east coast, this is phenomenal for the program to graduate a coach to a Power 5 head coaching job.

Harbaugh brought us Durkin--he will bring in someone else who is great too.  The fact that Durkin did well and then immediately got his own gig will only make the Michigan DC job under Harbaugh that much more attractive.

The consistency at Michigan will be Harbaugh.  He will attract the top talent to work under him.  That talent may move on to better things, but there will be more talent begging to work under Harbaugh.  Trust in Harbaugh to figure it all out.

Durkin did a good job but how much of it was him. The defense was expected to be good and in the end it was a top20 defense which is good but not great. Wish him luck against MSU OSU and PSU

The strength of the defense was D-line and Greg Mattison should get the most credit for that. Our linebackers became a complete tire fire by the end of the season and that was Durkin's specialty. I hope Harbaugh finally hires a great linebackers coach, we haven't had one here in a long time.

Gotta say this is a huge surprise to me.  Knew he was head coaching material, but did not figure he would get the first Head Coaching job her interviewed for, at  least during his first season at Michigan.  Must have been  a heckuva interview if this is on the level.  Wish him well, but do not like the fact it is at a school in our division.   Does he stay for bowl game since Maryland not bowling?  If so, when does he start recruiting for Maryland and stop recruiting for us?

Leaders And Best

1. Looking back on this season as a whole, Durkin did a solid job, but I don't think this is a huge loss. Michigan's defense got gashed and exposed down the stretch by competent offenses (Indiana & Ohio State), and some of our defensive numbers may have been inflated by going up against some mediocre offenses. The weakest part of our defense (LB) was coached by Durkin. May sound like sour grapes, but I think Harbaugh will be able to find a suitable replacement. Better this happen early in the coaching cycle than have to scramble late in the game. Congrats to Durkin on the job, but I have to wonder what Maryland is thinking here if this was the best they could do.

2. My bigger concern is trying to keep most of the staff intact and seeing if Durking tries to take any other assistant coaches with him. You would think Jay Harbaugh, Drevno, Wheatley, Mattison, Greg Jackson, and John Baxter are probably not leaving unless they get a serious promotion. The only guys I would be worried about are probably Jedd Fisch and Mike Zordich.

3. Some people owe Mark Blaudschun an apology. As I posted in the thread when he first broke this story, he may be a dinosaur, but he has been a college football beat writer for a long time with a lot of contacts especially on the East Coast. I was skeptical of the report at the time, but I knew he probably wouldn't post something like that unless he had some inside info.

This stinks.  And I'll be honest, I think Durkin is one of the best defensive minds in football, but this is a still a reach for maryland as a HC, he doesn't have the experience.

How bad is our luck to get maybe our best coordinator in decades and after 1 season he leaves to be the HC at a school within our division.  That just stinks.  There are 25 other schools looking for coaches and he picks one we have to play every year.

On the positive side we are going to build a heck of a tree in the next half decade which has been sorely missing the past 20 years - I just wish the roots had been here longer so Durkin felt long term affinity for UM as opposed to maybe Florida down the road.

Just amazing that Harbaugh has been an FBS HC for just five seasons but has already had six assistants become head coaches.

But like many others are saying, I'm less than pleased with the timing (week of the Game and only in year one), to another team in our division, and that this may be bad for some recruits.

I cannot say that he owed us as fans anything, but I have to imagine that he and Harbaugh have worked this out. Can you imagine pissing off Harbaugh?

I hope that he did not lie to recruits. Especially after the Weber deal back in Feb...

Go Blue.

Great coordinator and will be missed. Harbaugh will get another good one though. I'm more concerned with the current recruiting class he is tied to and recruiting going forward. He is a legit recruiter and Michigan needs top talent.

Will never happen but wouldn't mind printing mattison and hiring hoke as the dl coach. I have no doubt harbaugh will fill this hole ably. Disappointed it will definitely affect chemistry as players have to adjust to a new coach. Who knows how it will affect recruiting. Total dck move by durkin to interview the week of the osu game.

I guess it's unfortunate that he's staying in the B10, but our defense was good before he arrived anyways. As long as Mattison is on staff or defense will be fine.

It's obvious that Durkin didn't want to be Kirby Smart and stay as an assistant for 10yrs. So he would've left next year most likely.

I'm sure Jim will find a DC just as good.

Don't let the door hit ya.... Next man up. Hopefully someone who's devoted 100% to the last game of the year...it's sort of a big one and the bed was shat in this year's.

Thanks for coming to Michigan for a year, Durkin. It was fun watching you on the sideline firing up Michigan's defense. Best of luck to you at Maryland.

Confused as to why so many are wishing him good luck. He chose to leave Michigan to coach at a school in Michigan's division. He is now, by definition, the opponent and the enemy. "Thanks for your service"? Sure. "Good luck"? Nope.

I wish DJ Durkin a methodical 42-point beatdown every time we play them for as long as he coaches against us.

I wished him luck.  However, I want to share a secret with you.  It isn't worth anything.  Me and luck don't have an agreement that says if I wish it, it is given.  I have been told by a wise grandfather of mine that luck really is not given, it is earned.  I wished him luck.  He has to earn it now.  Once a year I will retract my wishes on the Saturday he coaches against Michigan.

There, all better now.

Look at this way, if Jim really wanted him to stay he would have made Durkin an offer that he could not refuse. There is a reason why Jom said go ahead and get a HC gig. I am sure Jim was not happy being ran over on defense by osu. He is a smart guy, he will find someone else. To me Durkin was mehhh a good/decent DC, its hard to say how GREAT he is since he didnt stay long anough to develop his own guys. Remember Mattison did a lot more when he came in with a defense that was at the bottom of CFB. So in all fairness Durkin inherited a group of well mentored guys.

to be objective about this one.  Hard to disassociate last Sat from the body of work.  Sorta like emptying the dishwasher 3 days in a row and then forgetting my wife's birthday....

Thank you for a great year, Coach.  Best of luck and wish you well in eleven games per year, 12 if bowling.  However, leave now.  Only Michigan Men coach at Michigan.  Go Blue!
