Texas Tech QB Davis Webb transfers to Cal

Submitted by Leaders And Best on

Texas Tech QB Davis Webb transfers to Cal backing out of his pledge to transfer to Colorado after signing a financial aid agreement several months ago. Colorado QB Sefo Liufau is dealing with a Lisfranc injury and may miss 2016 as well. Michigan's 2016 nonconference got even lighter if that were even possible.

LRT: Michigan's cupcake non-conference schedule just got cupcakier.

The Cal offense is similar to what he ran at Texas Tech, whereas the CU offense with Liufau is more of a read option type IIRC.  I definitely think it was fit over playing time, although Cal's QB situation is just as muddled as CU's.  Both Berkley and Boulder are great, so it's not like he's trading down in terms of a place to live.

Agreed...not sure why there's always been hate for him on here. I wouldn't call him WAY above, but he's an above average QB that would start for plenty of teams around the country.

Hell, I would've loved to have him at Michigan pre-Harbaugh. Our backup situation was awful after Mallett backed up Henne for Lloyd Carr.

The thing about college football is you just do not play many games (unlike college basketball).  It is not only imiportant if you win or lose, its almost as important HOW or HOW MUCH you win by/lose by.

If we now beat Collie by 62 instead of just 49 - that may give us another spot in the rankings.  Who knows.

But how you win/lose indeed factors into football rankings, unlike basketball.

Sat behind Baker Mayfield at Texas Tech until Mayfield was injured.  Following a successful remainder of the season, Mayfield transferred to Oklahoma. Was injured his Sophomore year and was backup his Junior year.

I don't understand why it's so hard to get Colorado back to the upper half of college football.  I've never been to Boulder but I've heard nice things.  My son had an interview and tour of the campus last year and seemed to think it was pretty cool.  What's keeping them from attracting quality coaches and athletes?

Weren't they the program that had that super garbage coach that they didn't have the funds to fire, so even though he was terrible and widely hated, he just kinda hung on to his coaching job for a few extra years until his buy-out expired, dragging the (already struggling) program down even further? I don't know fi they're a particularly well-resourced program (in the context of Power 5).

I mean, UM fell apart in a big way for the better part of a decade after spending like 35 years as the archetype of consistent success and really only seems to be on the upswing thanks to some lucky breaks (i.e., Harbaugh's inexplicably being run out of San Fran right when Hoke was getting fired). Successful programs are hard to build and hard to sustain. Big time programs fall apart sometimes and it's hard to build them back up (see Texas right now).

All that said, yee-ow, is Colorado a pile of garbage these days.

I know that after Gary Barnett's time at Colorado ended mired in a rather unfortunate series of controversies, but he ended up with a winning record overall in his time there, I believe. It was Dan "ten wins, no excuses" Hawkins - who came right after Barnett - that seemed to precipate or help precipitate a cycle of disaster at Colorado. Hawkins was.....different, as I recall, and I remember the "this ain't intramurals" rant in particular for some reason.

"Rather unfortunate series of controversies" = after the female kicker on your team reports being sexually assaulted by her teammates, appearing at a press conference and saying "well, she couldn't kick the ball between the uprights, okay?"

They have had no stability over the last 15+ years and McCartney built CU on recruiting. Some recruits will think the mountains are pretty and there are hot girls but you still have to be competent at developing players and managing a game and coaches.

Macyntire was dealt a tough hand and has improved the team dramatically from losing by 55 at home to Fresno State. The recruiting classes are highly ranked so they should be looking at 6-7 wins a year if he is at least an average coach.

the Colorado administration made recruiting the kind of "athletes" McCartny brought to Boulder a lot more difficult.  Colorado being the power they were for that brief decade plus ever again is unlikely.

Colorado had a lot of issues, some plublicized, most not.  Similar to Baylor if you catch the drift.

They have began a complete re haul of all athletics and the facilities. I went to the football facilities on a visit last year w my buddy and his son and there facilities are going to be sweet. Same as Arizona St. That program is sleeper ready to take off. There dropping $600 million into the football facilities now w new everything. That place was impressive as hell

I used to be a big Buffs fan. But not since....since.....since..

Anyways, I thought that was the worst way a game could end until that thing that happened in October of last year.
