Taysom Hill to Michigan?

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

Brian and Ace on MGoRadio talked about the possibility of byu injured QB Taysom Hill transferring to Michigan.

it starts at 04:11 of segment 6.

if you can't listen to it, basically they're saying it's possible and that they've heard things themselves from people out in Provo on top of reading things on the pay sites about it being in motion.

I agree with this sentiment and my blind faith is actually making recruiting less fun.

Harbaugh doesn't think Matt Falcon can play? Okay, me too.
Harbaugh wants Hill? Okay, me too.
Harbaugh wants some complete unknown no-star DB from Canada? Okay, me too.

Wow, thanks for introducing me to this particular moral dilemma. Would I want Cook to lead the Lions to greater success...

Fortunately, 1) the Lions will again find a way to land a draft spot just out of the range of franchise-changing players, as always, and 2) Cook would likely suddenly lose all accuracy and poise once he became a Lion anyway.

I'd be fine with Cook as the Lions QB.  Not that I cared about MSU's QB, but it seemed like they wanted to play anybody BUT Cook back then.  None of the other guys seemed to be able to complete a pass to their own players, so they put him in and the offense suddenly got ok.

As the Lions QB he would either be a welcome, competant, accurate QB or the next in a long line of Lions QB's that suck.  I'm fine with that either way.

Yes Harbaugh, in all things Harbaugh. Butt - we're still allowed only 85 schollies, and in '16 there'll already be:

1. Morris 2. O'Korn 3. Speight 4. Gentry 5. Malzone 6. Peters 7. Viramontes (barring attrition).

Do we really have an 8th scholarship to devote to one position - albeit the most important position?

Were it not for Hill's persistent injuries, I might say yes... but as we're all so excited to see O'Korn & Gentry play, and so intrigued with Viramontes skill set and Peters' polish, I call it unnecessary and unwise to utilize another precious schollie on a fragile QB.

But I think this sends a bad message to players on the roster (and Peters), some of whom actually appear to be really good QB's.  At some point you have to say we have enough scholarship QB's.

Unless they're bringing him in for a different role.  Maybe as a situational QB or a RB / WR / whatever.  That I'd be fine with.

I agree that we have some good QBs on roster, but Harbaugh has always been big on competition making you better and earning the position.  Hopefully if it does happen it will be just to bring out the best from everyone.

I kind of doubt it though as Harbaugh seems to not like picking up guys who have had a lot of past injuries.

Competition good, but 8 (or 7 if Vicious Vic goes to defense, a distinct possibility) of our limited scholarships on one position that only plays one of at a time scares me, just from roster composition.  Hill's a great player if/when healthy, but is he significantly better than the guys on the roster, such that it's worth the scholarship there as opposed to, say, another O linemen or LB depth?  I'm not certain.

All that said, I trust in Harbaugh, and if he thinks the value is there, it probably is.

Nothing is given, everything is earned, and it shouldn't discourage Peters or Gentry.  They are both super young and Hill would be here 1 year.  I may be missing a guy or two but we lose exactly 6 starters going into next year from the 22 on O and D.  Rudock, Kerridge/Houma, Morgan, Bolden, RJS/Ojumedia, and Wilson.  We have the talent to be crazy good next year, except for the whole unproven QB thing.  Brady Hoke really deserves a high five for this.

but at what point is enough, enough?

And honestly my main problem with Hill is that he's made of glass.  He's missed out the last two seasons, almost in their entirety, due to injuries.

Say what you will about the quality of the teams in the Big 10, but most of them play pretty good defense.  What do you think is going to happen to him against Wisconsin in the Big 10 opener?

Gentry will be a redshirt freshman, Peters and Vic will be true freshman. Next year the qb competition will be Morris, Speight, and Okorn(if nobody transfers). Ill take Hill anyday over those 3. And no he is not made of glass, he has had some bad luck. Either way, I highly doubt he is coming here,

The freshman (true and redshirt) will still be way too young to worry about a 1 year grad transfer encroaching on anything. The message this would send if it happens, is that Morris and probably Speight are not going to get the keys to this thing and should probably transfer themselves. If Harbaugh after more than a year of evaluation makes the decision that bridging the gap from what was here to his recruits has to be done with transfers, I trust in Harbaugh.

with Gentry competing for the starting job as a RS freshman.  And I think that one or both of Morris  / Speight will transfer.

Have you not seen O'Korn's freshman year at Houston?  He was outstanding.  And his 2nd year slump was due to a change in offense and the new coach making him change his throwing mechanics.  Which Harbaugh promptly changed back.

they should return a ton of starters.  g glasgow is also gone this winter but i think hes the only one you missed.  they will lose some 5th year types but likely return most of the impact 5th years (ie wormley, magnuson, henry, etc) so they should have an experienced unit at most spots (as many indicated when pointing to 2016).

QB will be one of the only major question marks, and while all 22 obviously matter, QB naturally carries a little weight.  does harbaugh see okorn as the guy to get it done at elite level?  if not, then hill is a proven playmaker.  theyre def heavy on QBs but harbaugh had no choice, hoke (who left some talented players elsewhere) did not leave any QBs capable of winning big games (let alone proven to score points at this level).  if you have a chance to add a difference maker at QB, kind of have to make that move.

plus i think at least 1 QB from group of morris, speight, etc will transfer

I think that Peters has already been told that he will likely redshirt like Andrew Luck did.

I think Morris graduates in May and there is a reason that he is redshirting this year.

Vicious Vic may be used at any number of positions, not exclusively at QB.

I think the only one who might have a reason to be upset would be O'Korn, but competition is a good thing.

It's hard to get a read on him just through looking at stats, because he has played in 6,13, 5, and 1 game(s) the last four years.  He was originally committed to Standford under Harbaugh then switched to BYU because of an enrollment date issue.

His first year he was used as a running threat substitution, and in 6 games he totalled only 71 passing attempts.  Some interesting career stats though; averaging 16 rushing carries per game over his career for an average just over 88 yards per game.  He is averaging just under 200 passing yards per game over the same time, so he does add a threat in both facets.  That's not quite Denard level production, but it does make me intrigued in the prospect of generating 300 yard of offense per game.

But man - dude can't stay healthy.  I guess if he is brought in then you'd want to either limit his usage and/or have a solid backup plan.

He made a big jump btw 13 and 14.  The same jump we hoped Denard would make.  While retaining his running ability.  Check his completion % year over year.  He was a 54% passer his SO year ala Denard, then jumped to 67% his JR year.  That while his yards per attempt went up (i.e. he was making a bit more difficult throws) from 6.7 to 7.4

Again he is basically a braxton Miller big body runner with jukes and nice speed plus an arm you have to respect.  Even if he dropped to 62% he would be Jake Rudock level completion rate with the ability to throw 40 yard passes while outrunning most Big 10 LBs.

And that 19 to 14 ratio was (a) better than most QBs weve seen here in the past 8 years incl Rudock right now and (b) was his first year starting.  People improve last I checked.  His JR year was prorating to 17 TD v 7 INT in 12 games before he was felled in game 5.

Not sure about that.  He's possibly a game changer and is obviously extremely talented.  I can't think of a reason why you wouldn't bring him in if you have an open scholarship.  That's a Russel Wilson like impact if it all works out.  Taking a chance on getting a player like that doesn't mean the other QB's are in trouble.

If next year shapes up the way we're all thinking it might and a dynamic dual-threat QB can push the team over the edge........gotta take that shot.
