Taysom Hill to Michigan?

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

Brian and Ace on MGoRadio talked about the possibility of byu injured QB Taysom Hill transferring to Michigan.

it starts at 04:11 of segment 6.

http://www.stationcaster.com/player_skinned.php?s=901&c=20963&f=4952913

if you can't listen to it, basically they're saying it's possible and that they've heard things themselves from people out in Provo on top of reading things on the pay sites about it being in motion.

THe more the merrier, you gotta bet at some point in time these Qb's will start dropping like flies from the roster, someone has to transfer, they cant all be blind to the situation at hand

I really don't want to waste our time with a QB who can't stay healthy. He's good when he's on, but you can't make the club from the tub. Let O'Korn, Gentry, and Peters duke it out in spring - the winner will be good. Rudock was what we needed this year, but I really don't like the impression we give QB recruits if we are continuously led by a 5th year transfer. I've always been under the impression that JOK is really good and will be an All B1G guy here for the next 2 years. If he gets beat out by Gentry or Peters, that's fine too. No disrespect to Hill, he's a good player...but I'd rather not.

with the type of QB's Harbaugh seems to be bringing in and recruiting here.  I might be able to see it if we only utilized him in certain situations or as a change of pace QB.  But that also doesn't seem consistent with Harbaugh's tendency to stick with one guy.  This rumor doesn't pass the smell test IMO.

Harbaugh has always recruited mobile quarterbacks hard. He recruited this kid at Stanford (and he committed before leaving for his LDS mission and transferring to BYU). Not run-first guys like Denard, but pocket passers who are also mobile threats. Luck was quite the runner at Stanford when he chose to take off, Kaepernick was Jim's personal pick, Peters is a really good athlete, and so is McCaffrey in 2017. I'm sure Jim would have drooled over the chance to coach Devin coming out of Inkster.

This is exactly the type of QB Harbaugh wants.

All I've got to say is IF this happens then the team we open the season with next year better get ready for a MAJOR ass-whipping.

For the first half anyways.  You know - before he gets hurt.

That O' Korn does not start under center at the start of next season.

I've even heard that he is the best QB on the roster currently, he just isn't eligible.

I am not one to doubt anything Jim does though......

I was talking about this on here the other day.

Taysom is definitely interested from what I've read. I asked Brian the question to see if he heard anything and was pleasantly surprised that he has. So this isn't just premium board stuff.

This guy is a Heisman level player. You take him.

If I had to compare him, I'd say he's Denard but a better passer.

His 2013 season was a mirror to Denard's 2011.

His 2014 season was ridiculous until he got hurt, his completion % jumped like 10% or something.  But obviously his season ended early.  And then again in 2015.

This is a guy who single handily had me fearing an upset of UM in game 4 this year - he is that scary when functioning upright on 2 legs.

I am sort of torn on this. You take away a scholarship from someone in the 2016 class who would be here 4-5 years in return for a QB whose history says he makes it 2-4 games thru 2016.  And you give this guy all your starter reps from spring til August so the backup loses development and then will almost be surely thrust on the team just as Big 10 season starts (i.e. when Hill annually gets hurt).

I don''t know - could go either way on it.  If Hill can make it even 8 games next year I'd say hell yes.  8 is a major reach for him.

But how would you feel if O'Korn goes down next season and Harbaugh has to start Gentry, Malzone or Morris in EL or Columbus? Basically, forced to play someone with zero game expereince in a hostile environment. We've been lucky this year (knock on wood) that Rudock has stayed healthy.

This is a silly argument.  We take him. Yes, please.

It may say something about what is on the roster next year, it may not.  He has a tremendous ceiling and you have have O''Korn and Gentry behind him.

O'korn is probably an upgrade over Rudock (maye a substantial one) and Gentry played football in NM. Not sure how ready he is at this point. He could be great, but give him time.

Harbaugh has always said he loves competition.  He wants Qb's who are not afraid to compete everyday.

This would be awesome if we get him.  Maybe O'korn beats him out, who knows.

There will be significant transfers from M in the QB department, it is inevitable.

To add to WD, Gentry's a true freshman who played high school football in New Mexico. He's as raw a QB prosect as it gets, but with tantalizing upside.

If we're being realistic, the earliest we could expect him to compete for the starting job is 2018-- after O'Korn has graduated--barring any freakish leap in developement a la Denard in the 2009-10 offseason.

BlueMan80

and he came from New Mexico so there was a concern about level of competition.  Maybe he'll end up at another position...like TE?  Who knows.  Harbaugh has his way.

I get the feeling that when Harbaugh throws Speight, Malzone, and Morris into practice against our first string defense, they must be getting eaten alive.  I can't see a true freshman QB doing well against that unit.  Peters and VIramontes will need time to mature.  So, taking Hill may be more about insuring we have 2 good QBs, because injuries happen at that position.  Just ask Hill.  Harbaugh experienced it first hand in 1984.  I'm sure he doesn't want any drop off at that position.  This gives the other 3 guys a chance to pursue other schools if it's not going to happen for them in Ann Arbor.

He is a good player that's for sure, was in the early Heisman talk last season. I'll believe it when I see it, I guess. Kind of want to see O'Korn play.

He's also only a year younger than Jay Harbaugh fwiw.

if your coach is constantly pulling in 5th years to start over those who've been loyal to the program. Rudock was a one-off due to the hole at quarterback that Harbaugh inherited. No way he makes it a general policy.

If there is some disaster in the off season, Hill may get a look, but pending that I don't see this as realistic at all.

If he brings him in as the "guaranteed starter," yeah I could see that as sending a bad message. But if he's just bringing him in to compete, then what would it say about the character of a potential QB in the program if he's scared to compete against an injury-prone transfer in his first year in the program?

A couple people have talked about "constantly" pulling in 5th years.  If this transfer happens, Harbaugh will have done it twice, during the transition to his team and his players, when he had a virtually bare cupboard of QBs upon arriving in AA.  I would not expect it to happen again, and I would not call doing it twice under these circumstances "constantly."  I don't know if this is a good idea or not, if it even is a possibility, but if Harbaugh thinks he needs Hill, then that's good enough for me.

how anyone would have a problem with this?    And i disagree with the notion that it speaks to poor development of the guys under Rudock.   Don't you want as many quality guys as you can get competing at every position?  Bring in the best players you can find, let them fight it out, and may the best man win.

This would be strange considering how the staff is handling Matt Falcon. I get that it's not totally apples to apples but it still wouldn't look good.

With his injury history it would be a gamble with little upside IMO.

The term 'upside' basically means best case scenario, and Taysom Hills upside is huge. His injury history increases the risk of signing him, but doesn't change his upside. Maybe I'm getting overly literal here but to say there's no upside is completely wrong. It would be more accurate to say it's a high risk/high reward proposition. But to me, spending 1 scholarship for 1 year isn't all that big of a risk

It would be a gamble with huge upside actually.  If he lasts all 12 games you get Braxton Miller running + a legit passer in 1 body.  The gamble would be his health and then you slow down the development of his backup who most surely will be playing next year at some point.  Like Denard who took a lot of hits Hill's style makes him take a lot of hits.
