The tastiest serving of schadenfreude yet delivered by Gregg Doyel of the Indianapolis Star

This is so comically over the top.  It's beyond finger-licking good.  I may make a poster out of this column.

Doyel: National title for Harbaugh's cheating would render college football meaningless

Understand this: We could be days away from Jim Harbaugh hoisting a national championship trophy to cap a season in which he was suspended twice for cheating – the first three games of the regular season, and the last three – because of two different scandals that helped the 2023 Michigan Wolverines achieve greatness.

When that time comes, if that times comes, college football will be thrown into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, to borrow from a book Harbaugh likes to thump. That’s from the New Testament, Matthew 13:42.

Perhaps it is right and good that Jim Harbaugh be remembered as one of the horsemen of this apocalypse. Because if Michigan wins the national championship in a season it was popped twice for cheating – violations that helped this very team – college football will become like something from the Book of Ecclesiastes.

Meaningless.

I would love to know what "meaning" he currently finds in college sports.

I mean, obviously given that I am a regular on MGoBlog, I love me some Michigan athletics but I don't pretend there is some deeper meaning to it other than just fan entertainment.

If you put a gun to my head, I would say a successful season drives the local economy and # of school applications a bit.

I feel like this quote from the article's linked version of Ecclesiastes is a little more relevant to the columnist:

"Words from the mouth of the wise are gracious,
but fools are consumed by their own lips.
 At the beginning their words are folly;
at the end they are wicked madness—
    and fools multiply words."

I really love the Tucker Carlson "just asking questions" attacks.

Part 1:

That was Harbaugh during the COVID shutdown. We’ll never know how many players on Michigan’s current roster were contacted illegally by Harbaugh, or how many were subliminally swayed to Michigan by the special attention. If the number is greater than zero – and it has to be – it’s too many.

Part 2:

And we’ve seen tape – “Sweet Jesus there’s always a tape,” as Scott Glenn’s Washington Post reporter says in the 1996 movie “Courage Under Fire” – of Stalions standing next to Harbaugh during games, studying the opposing sideline and telling him … something.  What was he saying? And why was Harbaugh listening to a low-level staffer, right then and there, as he called plays?

That's been my favorite thing this whole time.

Hater fanbases, 2024: "If Michigan wins, they have a huge asterisk! Vacate! None of these wins count! Washington will be the real champions! And Florida State, even after losing by 60!"

Hater fanbases, 2018: "Don't you DARE try to claim the 2013 basketball Natty! So what if Louisville had to vacate! They beat your ass ON THE COURT, where it matters!"

Which is it, fucks?

Please, Doyel - explain how burgergate from 2020 helped this team. You know, the burgers for the already-committed recruits. Or the on field coaching by an analyst that seemed to really help that 2-4 2020 team.

Or, to quote, the meaningless signgate, after which broke, UM has won 7 straight, including psu, osu and bama?

As somebody who lives in Indy and has a subscription to the Indy Star to promote local journalism, I am too familiar with Doyel's shtick. In general he trolls the local fan bases but apparently that was not enough.

Yes, for the love of God, please don't give this asshole clicks. It encourages shit coverage and rage clicking is bad for your own mental health.

Schadenfreude is taking joy in someone's misfortune; Gregg is certainly misfortunate--he can't spell either of his names correctly and he's a dullard--but he's not unhappy. Ol' Popeye Doyel is pounding his poor pud in a fury of smug self-satisfaction, grinning and drooling all the way; whatever a reader may feel at this display is more akin to the feelings of one touring Bedlam in days of yore.

Absolutely, this is not schadenfreude. This is poorly written, presumptive, subjective, toxic, fictional vitriol.

He makers these preposterous assertions.

During the COVID shutdown, we’ll never know how many players on Michigan’s current roster were contacted illegally by Harbaugh

Maybe, but we do know the impact players on the team from that class; Rod Moore, JJ, Colson. McBurrows and Edwards.

We also know all those players committed before the dead period except Donovan who was considered a lock since 2018.

Yet somehow Doyle is adamant a zoom call to Louis Hansen will not only taint and mar our potential National Championship it will be the death knell of College football???

That guy did not have a good Christmas.

how do you possibly reason with someone so overwrought with emotion, so untethered from reality?  and even if you assume all his conspiracy theories are 100% correct, how does he not fall into some black pit of depression when thinking of literally every other CFB champion who has committed 10X, heck, 100X the alleged infraction that he's about to throw himself off of a building for?

alabama x6; UGA x2; ohio x2; clemson x 2; USC (vacated?); etc.

this is a veritable 'murderer's row' of level I NCAA infractions and this guy is sniveling about advance scouting?  how can he clutch his pearls knowing ohio was giving our stuff to purdue and TCU, or that saban hired our LB coach?

Right, that's what I don't get.  "The sign-stealing guy was talking to the coach."  Well, yeah, that's his job.  It's not against the rules, Gregg.  Just like it wasn't against the rules for Saban to hire George Helow, and presumably to talk to him during the game.  Not that it helped...

Should we be suspitious of any head coach who talks with a “low-level” staffer on the sidelines? I wonder if other coaches talk to their paid staff while coaching.

This sanctimonious bullshit is laughable and it's childish. Calling every potential rule violation no matter how inconsequential "cheating" is the kind of whiny nonsense I would expect to see on an all-caps rant from a blue-check with three followers on Twitter. I gotta say that I'm loving seeing these clowns froth at the mouth and spill their dumbass takes filtered through the lens of ignorance and envy.

For heaven's sake...Ohio State cheated during the covid year and nobody batted an eye.

OSU practiced before B10 rules allowed and even uploaded evidence to their social media accounts. Getting extra practice in before the season is an onfield advantage.

Day was asked at least twice if they had practiced with coaches and declined to comment.

The BigTen looked the other way because OSU was the only contender in the B10.

I wish we could leave this god forsaken conference.

BS! Look at most of the other teams that have won the National Title in the past 20 or so years. Just about all of them have had some sort of "scandal" that bled over into the time that those teams won. Not one is calling their National Titles to have asterisks.... Pure stupidity.

Maybe Doyel should spend a little more time studying the true meaning of Ecclesiastes and less time worrying about Coach Harbaugh. He might find himself less bitter and less focused on lousy pieces like this.
