stop freaking out about the buzzer beater loss, please
Michigan was supposed to lose this game. Everyone in the entire country - including the writers of this blog and all of its participants - knows that OSU's basketball team is superior to Michigan's. Yes, it's frustrating, but it's true.
What would a Michigan victory today have meant in the grand scheme of things? All it would have given us is a victory over OSU, and we'd likely lose tomorrow. This was not a game that was going to be the difference between a Final Four appearance and a giant disappointment.
So if you want to rail on Beilein for his late-game decisions, fine. If you want to lament our season, fine.
But let's not lose perspective and fly off the handle. Today's outcome was representative of what Michigan's team has shown all year. If Beilein didn't deserve to be fired before today, he doesn't deserve to be fired now. If Michigan wasn't going to do anything in the NCAA tourney before today, a victory in this game would not have propelled the team to glory in the coming weeks.
This is the type of result a rational fan should have expected all along. Let's not get bent out of shape.
and you misread my post for like the 20th time today...
Please say you are just a walmart wolverine and not a fellow alum.
Yeah, I don't know about sports when I was a college athlete during my undergrad...
Well, you do admit you were in a sport that there were no actual fans of. So maybe you're foreign to the concept.
Did a basketball player steal your girlfriend when you were in school? Where's all the hostility coming from?
I think everyone is reading you pretty clearly today...
nope, i just sucked at basketball in high school. I also played hockey in high school. I just think the sport is boring.
Where's is all your hostility coming from? Is it from some inferiority complex that basketball will never be as popular as football. Are you are also jealous you will never attend the university of michigan (judging from your reading skills, i doubt you did well enough on standardized tests to gain acceptance to Michigan).
Actually, I like football better. But I want Michigan to win in all sports. Unlike some. But your "I'm saying whatever you say right back at your" argument is doing your Michigan education proud.
(And if we compared academic and athletic connections to U-M...it would be kinda funny...but not in the way you think...).
You might want to go back and read my posts. I want michigan to win all sports, i just don't get bent out of shape when we will lose. Just like you are ambivalent towards olympic sports at Michigan, I am ambivalent towards basketball. I want them win, but honestly, my day is relatively unaffected.
You don't want to compare CV's with me. It would be funny to say the least. However, academic background is not a contest. I have been in school for most of my life and I cannot wait to defend my thesis next winter.
This conversation is awesome.
Most people:
"My dad can beat up your dad!"
"My grass is greener than yours."
"Hey, bet my car's faster than yours!"
Wolverines:
"MY CV IS LAUGHABLY BETTER THAN YOURS!"
we are after-all the Harvard of the Midwest.
Touche
Actually, where can you find a comment claiming I don't care about Olympic sports, and it is not just something you've made up? I've actually said stuff to the contrary.
But it really doesn't matter, because I would never tell someone who had a kid in it, or is an alumni athlete, or just likes the sport that they shouldn't feel bad that we just lost a competition in swimming or whatever. I may not care about it as much as they do, but I wouldn't berate their feelings on it and say "eh, what you crying about...it's only gymnastics". They care too.
And you do know the idea of college is to graduate at sometime, right?
tell that to my thesis advisor...who is keeping me on....
Since you have suggested that you can tell who could and could not get accepted to the U of M based on the content of their entries in this blog, where would you place someone who offered the following:
I want them win, but honestly, my day is relatively unaffected.Just curious.
You tell me...
Is there a riot somewhere? Are people burning things??
I don't give a rat's ass what was supposed to happen. Michigan nearly overcame those odds today, but failed to in a spectacularly heart-wrenching fashion.
I'm going to sit here at work and lick my wounds until such time as I can get home and deaden them with booze. If that's irrational behavior for an avid sports fan, then brand me with a big I on my forehead.
What would a Michigan victory today have meant in the grand scheme of things? All it would have given us is a victory over OSU,And that's all that matters.
and we'd likely lose tomorrow. But at least we'd have a shot. Most schools, including a number in the top 25, don't stand a chance at reaching the Final 4. So why play the game at all? If OSU beat us by a comfortable margin, then you have a point. But that was a gut-punching, shitty way to lose, and we'll probably be reminded of it for a while. It is completely irrational to call for Beilein's head; he's a great coach who made a terrible call. But it's perfectly rational to feel heartbroken with the way the game ended.
"But it's perfectly rational to feel heartbroken with the way the game ended."
That's totally fine. Feeling heartbroken is within the realm of rationality. That's not what I'm referring to when I say "freaking out."
I'm talking about calling for people's heads, saying good riddance to certain players, etc.
I don't think anyone started calling for Beilein's head, or if it did happen it was only a few sundry fans, not the majority feeling of the board.
If people hadn't called for his head, I wouldn't have posted this.
But I agree that it's not everyone. Obviously.
Wow, you're way overblowing how much of that has happened to make your point.
Most are what a horrible job coaching on that last play, with a small segment of hey, that's the best you could do on that play, he hit a big shot, with maybe a TINY amount of FIRE THE COACH NOW ARRGGGGH. (With a smattering of compare coach x to coach y).
Look, you have no problem with the game, that's fine. But don't tell people with rational reactions to a brutal loss that they're all overreacting.
"Wow, you're way overblowing how much of that has happened to make your point."
Actually, no, I'm not. I never said "Everyone's doing this" or "Most of you are doing this." I said that it's happening.
And I have seen these things, both on here and on The Fort (many of whom probably visit here as well).
If only a small minority are doing it? To hear yourself talk? Because you're never going to change that tiny percentage. Pissing in the wind.
I must have missed the lecture during both general psych and abnormal psych when emotional responses were linked to rational behavior.
I don't to be rude, but that's not very clear in your post. Calling for people's heads is irrational, but it hasn't happened to a large extent and those who have will most likely be marginalized. Your post sounds like "Get over it, we were supposed to lose anyway," than "Let's not lose perspective about what little it means for Beilein's career," which apparently is what you meant to say. I think you may need to clarify that distinction a bit and explain that you're speaking with regard to general fan reaction and not just the MGoBoard. I have few doubts about you Magnus, but I think you may have missed on this one.
Eh, that's okay. A negbang feels nice once in awhile.
I'll leave it how it is. If people want to get pissed at a post that says "Let's not freak out," then amending it at this point isn't going to calm them down.
Your subject line specifically references people freaking out about the buzzer beater.
Are you now suggesting that your entire lecture was to be directed at the people berating Beilein and the players and not the people belly aching about the last second kick in the groin?
I see......
But truly, if it had said, "no one call for Beilein's firing after just one more loss", I think he would have gotten a lot of "uh huh's".
No Tears of Infinite Sadness please...
The part that is frustrating is that it shouldn't have happened. I just will never understand why you dont put someone on the ball or if your not going to do that double team fucking turner. Or heres a novel approach, pick them up and pressure them. I'm not calling for his head either but I do think that next year is a big year for him. Another season like this one and a change may have to be made.
I thought one rule had become universal from the '92 Duke-Kentucky regional final(aka Hill to Laettner). That is you have a man covering the inbound pass in the situations. No clear pass in. Guess not.
...this is one of them.
my head freakin' hurts. My whole body took a metabolic plunge into an unhealthy state. I know the team wasn't that good this year, that we weren't expected to win this game, but it's our school, it's our team, we root for them, right? I am a serious rooter, I guess.
Totally irrational on your part.
but I'm sure we all get a little like this for one game or another. Then you add in that the game is against your biggest rival, a rival who the past few years seems unbeatable in just about any sport they complete in. While we mire in...whatever it is we are mired in. I can't stand being considered below OSU and for us to come back in that game against the highly ranked Buckeyes and their big Ten player of the year, to finally be playing like champions and to have the game 'won' with 2.2 seconds left then to have that happen?? I don't know, irrationnal might be rational when it comes to rooting for your alma mater (or however you came to feel that Michigan is your school), in that kind of situation.
Calibrate it.
The thing is we had a chance and we blew it at the end by not picking up Turner. That has been the most crushing game this year right beside the Purdue football game we should have won too.
yes, it is just a game. Emotional attachment is not healthy.
wow you guys sound like ndnation in here, really need to calm down
It would be irrational to be completely rational in this case.
As someone who did this during the football season just let them freak out. They want to call themselves fans, they want to say that "we are the leaders and the best" and we are above all of the other schools in the big ten. Our fans are educated and know things about sports blah blah blah.
Irrationality is a human emotion and after a crushing loss like this whether it happens to Michigan Michigan state or some shitty school the reaction is going to be the same.
Michigan fans like to say that we are the leaders and the best, well I'd like most of you to fucking act like it.
Maybe, just maybe, the next time something bad happens to Michigan, somebody who read this thread will think twice about going overboard with their reactions.
One can only hope.
I could not agree more with the OP...well said sir!
Calmer now. Able to post.
Darn It! Darn it to Heck!!
