Spartyfreude - Basketball Rivalries

Submitted by EastCoast Esq. on

I know we've talked about the rank of football rivalries in the past, but I don't think we have ranked basketball rivalries yet.

I bring this up because, going into the Wisconsin-Sparty game, I was definitely rooting for Sparty to lose. I know that we dislike Wisconsin, but I hate Izzo SO MUCH more. This got me to thinking where other MGoBloggers would rank their hate for some of our rivals.

Here is my list:

1) Sparty

2) Indiana

2a) OSU (because Ohio)

4) Wisconsin

5-12) Doesn't really matter

Obviously Rutgers and Maryland are near the bottom, but other than that, I don't have any strong feelings about the other teams.

that's the thing. Michigan is one of Illinois' rivals, but it doesn't really go both ways. Not since the 80's, anyway. My wife and her siblings are all U of I grads and, because of them, many of my friends are U of I grads. They acknowledge that they hate Michigan, but that we're not really rivals in any real sense of the word.

really just sparty and then osu/indiana.. after that, whoever we need to beat, most big ten teams have had their moments in the sun enough to dislike for some reason.. Illinois comes to mind.... for some reason osu has always had bigger rivalries with the eastern schools, penn state, and I can see that happening with maryland... I think because we have msu and minny sort of

1) MSU

2) Ohio State

3) Wisconsin (I went to HS in Madison during Alvarez's ressurection of that AD and have always rooted against them).

4) Duke

5) IU/Crean for what he did to Jeff Meyer

...which is why I created the ND basketball thread, seems like it would be a good idea to start playing ND in basketball and play them on 2 years off 2 years in football.

Anyway...

Basketball

  1. MSU
  2. OSU
  3. Duke

Football

  1. OSU
  2. MSU
  3. ND

...kind of easy actually.

They gave us a piece of paper at gametime to tell us that we were no longer going to be playing in the future. If Bo was still AD we wouldn't be playing them in any of our 27 sports unless they had a change of leadership or stopped being pompous assholes. Personally, I'm more excited to play at places like Texas or Oklahoma instead of a perennial matchup with a 8-4/9-3 ND team.

Don't like Indiana and Duke, and want to beat them badly.  And vice versa.  But I don't think we can call them rivals.  They wouldn't call us their "rival".

It seems like when you grow up near a place you learn to hate them more than anything. I grew up in east lansing and grew up hating MSU basketball because of Izzo and how he's the best basketball coach ever period according to the media. I've always hated their football team since they rooted against us every game more than they rooted for their own team when they sucked in the early 2000s. They couldn't stand that we were playing in the game of the century for a national championship while their team was 4-8. Give that fanbase a better football team and they are even more unbearable than before. You would have thought no other team had won a Rose Bowl before 2014 living in Lansing. The mismanagement of our athletic department in the various facets such as basketball and football since 2000 has really bothered me more than it should have. I'm glad that we've finally gotten some breaks our way such as Hackett and Harbaugh. Hopefully some of the other things like football/basketball injuries start to go our way too so we can start beating them regularly in both sports.

MSU, then OSU a bit farther down, then really nobody else.  IU fans are annoying, but given that they have no real other sport success to fall back on, I don't blame them for being pretentious about basketball.

Sparty was up by almost 10 and seemed to have the hot hand and it looked like they were going to win.  I turned it off as I didn't want to see the izzo smirky post game interview.  Checked the score later and was pleasantly surprised to see Wisconsin won.

Completely agree with that list. For some reason I don't hate OSU that much in bball. Indiana is on a another level

1) Sparty - Nothing is more satisfying in the game of basketball than to watch us beat Izzo and his merry band of hooligans. Especially when we're able to do it on their court and watch Stauskas blow kisses to the entire arena. I can watch the clip of Trey Burke pickpocketing Keith Appling all day and it will never get old.

2) OSU - because obviously. It feels so great and satisfying to watch our team of unheralded freshmen beat up on their team of blue chippers. If we can't beat their football team, beating their basketball team is the next best thing. If Beilein can ever recruit like Matta, we'd run them off the court every year.

3) Wisconsin - These past two years have made me really respect Bo Ryan as a coach, but I still can't think of him and his team without thinking of them sinking buzzer beaters on us, that damn ginger kid from a few years ago, and up until essentially this year, Ryan's boring and bland style of play that felt like it was ruining the game of basketball. I hope they win a title this year, but I hate losing to those guys.

4) IU - I don't consider them a rival, and I don't really dislike IU as a program. I just think their coach is a total asshat. That shit he pulled on our court two years ago made him look like an immature five year old, and I've lost all respect for him as a result. He's the definition of an underacheiver with all the talent he's able to bring in, and I bet he gets run out of town before too long.

Was tempted to put Duke or Kentucky on here, but we hardly ever play them, and even when we do we barely ever beat them. And honestly, I don't really have any ill will towards those programs anyway.
