So long, Angelo's.
The classic breakfast joint up on the Hill is being bought out by the University. Who was that musician that wrote that song, "We're going to Angelo's." Was that Dick Siegel?
YO WHAT THE FUCK
I see your YO WHAT THE FUCK, and raise you a DA FUK!?
I live near Ann Arbor. I have been going to Angelo's since The Fab Five. At least 15% of my body fat is Angelo's-originated. What am I supposed to do now? BE HEALTHY!?
Dafuq 100%
I'm legit depressed right now...
Owners wanting find a buyer, no one was interested, so they sold to the u
My memories include:
really good bread/toast
absurdly long wait time for good bread/toast
the place you’d make your parents, or friend’s parents, take you when they were in town
the end.
Yep, nailed it. Lifelong A2 resident here and the 10 or so times I went there, that was certainly one of the most memorable parts of it. Waiting... and parking. The crappy little parking lot housed spaces for about 1/5th of the diners.
However, you knew it was good and somehow it tasted better after the wait, like you had to work for it a bit.
that raison toast was worth the wait every now and again
You could say it was their raison d'etoast.
How did you like to etre your raison?
As someone who works at the medical campus, this is one of the few walkable options to get food. Will be sad to see this place close
Enroll at UM again, live at Mosher Jordan, eat at the dorm while continuing to work on medical campus... problem solved.
+1 for MoJo shoutout. First place I lived as a student.
As a Markley resident I utilized the MoJo dining room MUCH more than the Markley dining room, I'll say that much.
Another +1 for MoJo! Lived there sophomore year, worked at the MoJo cafeteria for sophomore thru senior years. MoJo dish crew for life!
Eggs Over Easy Hash Browns & Toast....

I/we need to go one more time on one of the bitterly cold days of the winter to get that experience of waiting.
I'll/we'll go other times when it's warmer too.
Well that blows.
The Village Bell
Dooley's
And now Angelos, all staples from my time (78-81) in Ann Arbor. Hands down the best breakfast place I've ever been or will ever go to. Standing in line to get seat on the weekends or just hitting it at 7:00am on a Thursday morning after pulling an all-nighter. And whenever I took someone to AA it was a must stop just to take it all in and enjoy the food.
Damn. That place will be very much missed by me.
The list of classic establishments is even longer. Village Corner, The Bagel Factory on South U, to name a few more.
Out with the old and in with the new is what Ann Abor is all about. There used to be a row of residential houses on the east side of Glenn Ave back in the day, likewise on the east side of Division Street from Liberty to Packard, now is long gone.
Maybe Village Córner was different when you were on campus but when I was there it was an overpriced store with staff that alternated between rude and depressed
Back in the mid 70s when I was a student, all I ever needed at "VC" was beer, chips or hostess cupcakes. That was it for much of my fellow student buddies and pals.
Much of the help back then was fellow students. One of my cross country team mates worked there back in the day.
That was pretty much VC in the 90s, except we also got Boones.
Ha! I worked at the VC around '84-86 and I can come up with a lot more adjectives to describe the staff.
As far as the "rude" part is concerned, I defy you to spend a shift on the bottle counter accepting returns from the frats and retain any positive opinions about humankind in general. Bottles half full of chaw and spit, dead mice, you name it.
that is the timeframe i frequented VC. but i wasn't a frat boy. spent a lot of money there on canadian beer. labatt's for $9.99 per 24 case of bottles.
living by kerrytown in the 80s the beer vault was the go to for cinci cream and old vienna which was good and cheap canadian beer. Still fits my beer palette if it exists. Slogan was "who wants the handsome waiter?"
I lived a block away ‘93-4. It was great. Prices on (still independent) Ben & Jerry’s were the same as the grocery store and they had a bigger selection. Sure it was overall more than Meijer, but it was a corner store. You pay for not getting in your car. The staff was fine.
All that I remember about VC was that they would let any ID go. I think I used a 48yr old female once to buy a case of Goebel (I'm not a female).
they were ahead of their time....
Goebel .... wow, there's a blast from the past
They're not going to argue with someone buying fine French beer!
(Those who know, know)
+1 for mentioning that fine French beer
I lived in one of those division street houses… sad to see it go, but it was probably nearly condemned when I lived there.
Yep. I lived in two houses in Ann Arbor and one apartment building. All three have been flattened for campus expansion.
I miss VC and Bagel Factory.
Bagel Factory was a Sunday staple growing up. My dad would go into work (Angell Hall) and pick up a dozen bagels and lox and the NYT coming home for brunch (the NYT from the Blue Front with its amazingly contoured wooden floors). There was Bagel Fragel later near north campus, same bagels, but weird hours - never quite figured it out.
VC... what a pit. But they took anything for an ID. You could probably hand them a piece of notebook paper with the words, "Solecismic is 21, signed Solecismic's mom" and they'd let you buy.
It seems odd reading this. I did not know of Angelo's at all. Just not on our radar, I guess. My loss, it sounds like.
Bagel Factory was abandoned from the first day I set foot on campus in 2008, and it sounds like it was that way well before I showed up. I can’t believe how long that place was unattended. The property costs must’ve been absurd.
Or I’m wondering how many potential tenants were turned off by having a frat literally right next door.
The Village Corner is gone too?!? Crap. Is there anything left on South U worth anything?
For my soph year I lived in the Joint House on S Forest and not too many weeks went by where I didn't visit both VC and the Bagel Factory. I also remember occasionally ordering a feast at UNOs down there, which was probably the first to disappear, which was probably an omen.
Supposedly it's progress, but I dunno. I did get a fresh couple fragels a few weeks ago, taste just the same as I remembered.
As a small confession, the summer between my junior & senior year I lived in a apartment just blocks from Angelos and never made it there. Now it's a regret I will live with permanently. :(
Here's a good list for anyone who wants a trip down memory lane: https://localwiki.org/ann-arbor/Ann_Arbor%27s_lost_eateries
Middle Earth…
Is Mitch's not legit enough? I liked Mitch's
I probably saw you at V-Bell back then, It was a hangout for me and my fraternity brothers.
You probably did. I was a Sigma Chi and worked as a bouncer there from the summer of 79 to 81. It always amazed me how the same women would buy me drinks and basically hit on me when I was working the door would barely talk to me when I wasn’t.
What house were you in?
Triangle. We were just a short distance away on Washtenaw. I think my grandfather was a Sigma Chi.
Don't forget about Thanos Lamplighter on Liberty. My connection to that place was that my ex-GF's Dad (played football at U of M in the late 60's and actually held the single season record for receptions at one time) was good friends with Thanos. As you'd expect - large greek dude with a thick accent. Super cool guy. Went there a few times before it closed. 1st time was with the ex's Dad and her and then everytime from then on when we went in there, Thanos would see us and treat us like family.
Loved that joint. Would get lunch with my Dad there once a week when I was at Community High and my Dad working on campus...
i went there a lot after basketball games. frieder almost always showed up with a few players. the greek pizza was outstanding.
can confirm. saw frieder there once...he was by himself that night (shortly before he bolted if I recall right).
Jack Clancy?
Not Jack. Mid1960's - without giving his name, he's still in the top 60 in all time receiving yards.
If I remember right, the university had something to do with Blimpie Burgers having to leave their original location on South Division. You hate to see these locally owned fixtures of the community getting forced out.
I can't believe Blimpie's never burnt down on their own.
Blimpy’s was bought out to build the new dorm for grad students.
