Six Wolverines on CFL Rosters
Are you ready for some football? The CFL pre-season kicked off this week, and according to the league website, there are SIX former Wolverines on CFL rosters in training camp. Bet you can't name them! They are:
Thomas Gordon, DB - Toronto Argonauts
Wayne Lyons, DB - Ottawa Redblacks (he lists Michigan, not Stanford, as his alma mater in his official CFL bio)
Craig Roh, DL - British Columbia Lions
Johnny Sears Jr., DB - Toronto Argonauts (You forgot about him, didn't you?) He's so old that he played for Lloyd Carr, and even though he was dismissed from Michigan and ended his playing career at EMU, he still lists Michigan as his alma mater.
Raymon Taylor, DB - Montreal Alouettes
Delonte Hollowell - can't find his team listed
It's fun perusing all the names on the CFL roster master list. You'll find lots of familiar names just among the quarterbacks, like Vince Young, Vernon Adams Jr., Dakota Prukop, Everett Golson and Dan LeFevour. Check it out:
In case you're wondering, the average CFL player makes about $80,000 a year. It ain't NFL money, but it ain't chump change for playing football, either.
Lyons is playing in the CFL. I just assumed a guy with a Stanford degree and Michigan education that didn't get a ton of run would do something else. Just interesting, good for him for following the dream though!!
If I were him I'd play as long as I could. Unless his body is in a bad place, why not?
I just assumed that someone with his academic pedigree could be making more money elsewhere, while not putting his body through hell. I don't fault him for wanting to keep balling though, its a special thing.
He did fail to tackle Jalen Watts-Jackson that one time...
That will ALWAYS be too soon
Sounds like a great idea for another Weekend at Bernie's sequel
Keeping with the "B" for Bernie theme, maybe it could be called Weekend at Buttgers.
she had 5 yards more rushing then I did in that game, but to be fair she had one more carry so I consider my day pretty good also.
+1. Informative.
I barely remember some of those names
"Ball State clawed back to the point that Carr had to send out the starters again to make sure the game was won."
And yet, again, that '06 team is often held up here as one that "could've won the national championship (!)."
Also, Sears is emblematic of the late-Carr recruiting ('05, '06, and '07) classes. They helped hasten the demise of RichRod (who, of course, did much to sink the ship).
though its still a bit of long shot, guys can get better still...
there have been guys that have been able to jump back into the NFL after 2-3 years in the CFL... and while only a few go on to become actual NFL players and maybe a couple of legit stars, the big hope is getting those 3 (?) years on an NFL roster to qualify for a NFL pension.
Keep playing if the fire is burning I say!
Devin Gardner and Gallon are playing in Japan just to keep playing...
Gallon is playing for Washington in the Arena League
Qbforce.com touts his Ti-Cats stint as if it was quite the CFL career, but that only lasted a month. Looks like he was OC at Lincoln High School in San Diego last season, but on May 11, the only person not retained on their varsity staff was Tate (replaced by Verlain Betofe, who had 3 receptions in one season at Indiana State, who has some sort of clothing line). Guess it's back to driving the family limos.
Really hoping to see my Stamps bring home the Grey Cup this year. Best team in the league 4 years running, and only 1 title in that time. Last year's loss to Ottawa was heartbreaking, esp. since it was the same weekend as the OSU robbery! We'll see how it goes...
Raymond is the Canadian spelling of Raymon. (I just made that up. It's a covfefe)
Everybody Loves Raymon
Average Salary for CFL Player – $80,000
You read that right, out of the 9 teams and around 44 players per team, the average salary of a player is only around $80,000. Now, this can expand to over $400,000 per year for quarterbacks, but can be as little as just over $42,000 per year as a minimum payment for someone who often sits on the bench.
I found this just doing a quick search. If you can stick around and be someone who plays you can make a decent living.
I would sit on the bench for $42,000 per year. Great view of the game.
Don't you mean DELONTE HOLLOWELL?
What the hell is a redblack?
Redblack is the official shirt of Canada - red and black plaid flannel, eh. They wear these when sitting on snowbanks.
