Shane Morris is Now a 5 Star (Updated)
Shane Morris is now a 5-star on Rivals. Let us rejoice and rain praise upon him. But let it be known, Mike Farrell still hates Michigan.
You can see the number of stars on his profile: http://rivals.yahoo.com/michigan/football/recruiting/player-Shane-Morri…
Other commits in the Rivals 100 should have their rankings update as well, if someone at a computer would like to list them below, I'd be happy to paste them up here.
Shane Morris: Was 22, now 17
Derrick Green-13
LaQuon Treadwell-23
Henry Poggi: Was 52, now 58
Mike McCray: Was 55, now 81
Patrick Kugler: Was 73, now 88
Kyle Bosch: Was 77, now 92
Chris Fox, Dymonte Thomas no longer in top 100.
Thanks to DCAlum and AAB for putting the updates together.

Also, you are defending Dilfer (guy who snubbed Shane) on a Michigan blog and are getting upvotes for it? Never thought I would see the f*cking day.
Maybe because most people here are rational and realize that 7 on 7 QB rankings, whether you're snubbed or not, don't mean shit. Holding a grudge and bitching about Dilfer is just stupid
August 20th, 2012 at 5:19 PM ^
Bro why don't you just type "fucking". If you're going to go through the effort of putting f******, then I could see how you'd feel a little better not cussing and all. There's kids out there for gosh sakes. Please explain any logical reson to put "f*cking", I mean c'mon man. What are you, 12?
August 20th, 2012 at 11:58 AM ^
I don't know when Trent Dilfer took over the Elite 11 but since he has I've noticed he seems to use the event as a forum to get underlooked guys exposure. Case and point, last year Neal Burcham entered the event with only one offer from FCS Central Arkansas. Dilfer started hyping the kid and included him in his Elite 11 and voile, Neal gets offered by Arkansas St, SMU, and Cincinnati. That and two MSU QBs have made it in the past 4-5 years.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:48 PM ^
I would agree with that. He took over the event in 2011 and in the past two years it certainly seems like he's been using it to hype up some under the radar prospects and get them exposure as shown by a UCF commit "winning" it this year.
You didn't really voice your opinion on whether or not you think that's ok, but I really don't have an issue with it. Shane is good. Many, many people seem to know that he is very good and he will have his college paid for 4-5 years as a result of being good. Being named one of the best 11 QB's at an almost-but-not-really football competition isn't going to change that, but if someone gets more exposure and a scholarship offer because Dilfer hypes them a bit more than they should be, the benefit from that is a lot higher than an ego boost for someone like Shane.
Zeke Pike was named an Elite 11 QB and he's going to be a tight end(!!!) at Louisville(!!!), which isn't even the school he was planning on attending less than a month ago. There's no benefit to being an Elite 11 QB when your goals are "Be a really good QB at real football" and "make the league". None.
August 20th, 2012 at 1:06 PM ^
I think the goal of the competition should be to rank order the best 11 QBs from a given recruiting class. It is possible that during the short camp Shane wan't among the top 11 performers, but I don't think anyone should be left out just because they have locked up an offer to an upper tier school and another guy hasn't.
I think it is great that Dilfer gets kids exposure, i.e. Burcham who probably would never be heard of again at Central Arkansas will now probably threaten some NCAA passing records in June Jones pass happy offense at SMU.
August 20th, 2012 at 1:34 PM ^
This should be good for Morris. A snub at Elite 11 to get him motivated and then some love from Rivals to keep his ego up.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:59 AM ^
Because people who like Shane Morris and other Michigan recruits are smart.
People who rank Michigan recruits lower are dumb.
That is the logic 'round these parts.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:07 PM ^
I don't believe you at all Magnus. You rated David Dawson a 67, so you must be too dumb to make an insightful comment like that.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:09 PM ^
Finaly, someone that understands my logic! I thought I was alone.
August 20th, 2012 at 1:43 PM ^
than he was yesterday when he was only a 4*.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:26 AM ^
Who cares?
/s, in case it isn't obvious.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:30 AM ^
They've actually updated the rankings yet, just the stars. On the Rivals 250 there are a number of five stars still ranked lower than some four stars.
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/rankings/rank-3054
(for example, cam burrows is still ranked above mcquay despite having four stars to mcquay's five).
August 20th, 2012 at 11:35 AM ^
Rivals 100 is updated, 250 is not. Shane comes in at 17, a rise from 22.

Treadwell is at #23 now. He is the #1 WR and the first 4*, so looks likely that he will get a 5th star before signing day as well.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:39 AM ^
USC's class now has 5 5-stars and 13 4-stars, for an overall average of 4.28. Is this the best recruiting class ever (well, since the birth of recruiting sites)?
Edit: Also, Rivals ranked the top 20 OT's in college football and Taylor Lewan comes in at #2.

but I have a hard time believing that, as a class, they'll end up being better than Alabama, Michigan and one or two of the others with full sized classes at the top end. The difference between eighteen and the 25, 26, 27 that other programs can pull in is huge.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:44 AM ^
It's not quite as top heavy as USCs 04 class that had 8-5 stars and 7-4 stars out of 20 counted commits but yes it might be one of the best classes ever.
August 20th, 2012 at 6:23 PM ^
Beat me to it, I was just thinking when I read his comment that there was a USC class from back a while that had a crazy number of 5-stars (I only looked at Rivals.com back then). Having 8 5-star players in one class is just downright heinous. There was an even 25 5-star players to Rivals that year and they raked in 8 of them, just ridiculous.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:31 AM ^
I'm now prancing around my house like a school girl.
Seriously, should have been a 5 star from the start. About time.

Creepy...

At least it looks cool on Rivals and our commit list...

is also the first four star at 23, for those who may care.

YES. I am now suddenly confident that Morris will be good.

Derrick Green-13
Shane Morris-17
LaQuon Treadwell-23
Henry Poggi-58
Mike McCray-81
Patrick Kugler-88
Kyle Bosch-92
Chris Fox and Dymonte Thomas dropped out of the top 100.
August 20th, 2012 at 11:58 AM ^
I'm surprised to see Fox and Thomas drop out, those guys definitely seem like they are Top-100 talents. It just goes to show how much emphasis Rivals puts on camps.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:02 PM ^
They do put too much emphasis on camps (thus Derrick Green being ranked all the way up at #13 overall), but Helmholdt also mentioned that Thomas is essentially a high school linebacker who's going to move back to safety in college. I guess Rivals has some resignations about how that will work out. Personally, I don't see it as much of an issue, because he's kind of a spur linebacker and he'll be a SS in college, so the position change won't be THAT huge of a deal.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:16 PM ^
August 20th, 2012 at 3:43 PM ^
People are quitting their jobs at Rivals over Thomas' transition ability? Yikes... /s (I think you meant "reservations"
August 20th, 2012 at 7:35 PM ^
Yes, I did mean "reservations."
August 20th, 2012 at 12:05 PM ^
I called Fox dropping in Rivals rankings after the challenge. It didn't go over so well...

...but I thought it was announced he was a five-star for both Rivals and Scout a few weeks back.
August 20th, 2012 at 12:03 PM ^
Well, he wasn't a 5-star on Rivals until just now.
But it was hinted at by the Rivals guys that Morris was in the conversation to move up to 5-star status.
August 20th, 2012 at 1:54 PM ^
August 20th, 2012 at 2:30 PM ^
No, it was Rivals. I don't spend much time on 247.

August 20th, 2012 at 12:24 PM ^
That's nice and all, but what will his NCAA Football 14 rating be?
August 20th, 2012 at 12:42 PM ^
Trent Dilfer put him outside the top 11! How could this be?
August 20th, 2012 at 12:44 PM ^
All aboard the Trent Diler Hate Train!

And so it was that Shane Morris was finally granted a fifth star.
And all was right in the world....
August 20th, 2012 at 1:10 PM ^
This is a very odd thread.
August 20th, 2012 at 1:16 PM ^
Congratulations to Shane, for given the distribution of stars among the top 50 ranked recruiting classes, this promotion makes him a 1%-er basically, and this as it should be.
