Should a president be this involved in athletics?
I don’t mean this as a criticism of Ono. I think circumstances forced him to be. Rather, I think is a bad sign for Manuel’s future here at Michigan. Ono can’t continue to keep worrying about a fracture in the athletic department when he had an entire university system to concern himself with.
When your boss has to intervene in your field of responsibility that normally isn’t a good sign.

Yeah - there could be lots more we don’t know about but a hypothetical - if you are a leader and something you feel is critical to your organization needs to get done; you Coach the person in charge to get it done. If they are failing, you intervene because you can’t afford the consequence of them “learning from their failure”.
if this is on top of sluggishness on less critical issues of a similar vein you let go (Mel; though maybe that was before President Ono’s time) you might be much more inclined to intervene to avoid a train wreck.
