With such hires, the recruiting narrative will be undeniable:
"You thinkin' about playing in The League? Great. Michigan is your school. We've got NFL head coaches, NFL offensive line coaches, NFL receivers coaches, NFL linebackers coaches [Mattison?], all coaching for Michigan."
"These guys know what it takes to succeed at the next level. They have an NFL perspective. They see potential in you, and they are willing to help you develop it. From day one, they will be preparing you to make the jump to the next level.
"And if the time comes that you're ready to make that jump, these guys still have fresh connections in The League. They have respect, and they can talk to people. NFL owners and general managers will listen to them.
"If Michigan coaches recommend you, you are going to get looks.
"A lot of them."

Tim Drevno is a west coast guy...so there goes your west coast recruiter. Very good contacts.
Also very good experience both in college and in the NFL. I've heard great things about him.
John Morton is not Johnnie Morton, he was OC for Pete Carroll at the end of the USC time, then went to the NFL.
He's a WR coach, seems like a west coast guy, but he's from Michigan.
Meanwhile Johnnie Morton, is a former NFL WR from USC, he played for the Detroit Lions...so plenty of people are going to think it's him coming back to Michigan. It's not. He's an MMA fighter now. Or he was until he tested positive for steriods. Different Morton.

at Western Michigan. He was at USC for four years as a WR coach. Also coached Jerry Rice when he was with the Oakland Raiders.

Some people on other sites were really hoping for Drevno, but didn't think he would come. From the sound of it, sounds like a great hire.
This is what Drevno said about Harbaugh when he left 49ers to take the USC job:
“I love the man,” said the 44-year-old Drevno. “He taught me to run the ball first and be physical up front -- attack each day with enthusiasm unknown to mankind. You’re either getting better or you’re getting worse; you’re never staying the same. Be the best at whatever you do.”From the same article:
Drevno’s 49ers résumé is impressive. In 2013, tackle Joe Staley and guard Mike Iupati made the Pro Bowl. In 2012, all five of the 49ers’ line starters were selected for the Pro Bowl, and Iupati was a first-team All-Pro selection. Not bad for a coach whose previous coaching stops also include Cal St. Fullerton, Montana State, UNLV, San Jose State, Idaho, and the University of San Diego.http://www.espn.go.com/blog/colleges/usc/post/_/id/16353/drevno-ready-t…

getting better or you're getting worse', the quote he gives on your first insert - that placard (among many others) was up in our dressing room at yost back in the day. i have used that one many a day, and my kids know the philosophy well.

Both have several years of recent california ties.
...I see an increased west coast recruiting presence coming! (Not that an increase recruiting presence everywhere wasn't immediately apparent with the Harbaugh hire.)
December 31st, 2014 at 2:14 PM ^
It's still going to be hard to pull many players from the west coast. This might be an opportunity as we still have openings in this class while they can come in for official visits.
December 31st, 2014 at 2:17 PM ^
any advantage that Urban M. may have in the South (although UM does have a considerable presence in the South.
UM aleady had a bit of a presence on the West Coast and now...even moreso.

Durkin would certainly help close the gap in the South/Florida. Not sure if he recruits Texas and Louisiana.

After RS sophomore Chad Wheeler (a returning starter at tackle) got hurt, the line was three true freshmen, a touted RS sophomore who still hadn't really played before (Zach Banner), and true junior Max Tuerk.
They went 9-4 and just smoked ND. Buck Allen rushed for almost 1,500 yards. Justin Davis has just under 600 more. Kessler threw 39 TD and 5 INT.
Especially for a conventional offense without a running QB, that is insane from a line that young.

Would Drevno really leave USC for Michigan to take the same exact job? Don't get me wrong it would be a huge get, but it seems like a lateral move until you consider the Harbaugh factor I suppose.

He'll probably be getting a raise and an upgraded title if he comes. Those don't hurt either.

the promise of the harbaugh coaching tree
December 31st, 2014 at 1:53 PM ^
Harbaugh factor is strong on this one. Looks like he's lived and coached his entire career on the west coast. The two years he coached the Oline at Stanford, they only gave up 13 sacks.
December 31st, 2014 at 2:00 PM ^
13 sacks in two years is just filthy. Poor damn Devin Gardner wishes he had that kind of protection.
December 31st, 2014 at 2:27 PM ^
No question.
But every time, he got back up.
December 31st, 2014 at 2:11 PM ^
Aside from "yes Harbaugh" you have to think about the human relationships dude. These guys were together a decade - they started as USD together when they were both nobodies. Jim took him to Stanford. Jim took him to the NFL. It has nothing to do with USC v UM. JH is the guy who made your career.
December 31st, 2014 at 2:48 PM ^
He's going to get paid more, and he can move away from Southern California, which is awesome for a guy who will probably be making $400k per year. In So Cal, $400k really isn't enough money to really live like a king. However, in Ann Arbor $400k will give you an awesome house and everything else you could have imagined.
