RR pulls a Tressel for Hagerup
To further talks on the " RR only offering one punter WTF?!?!" discussion, especially after seeing Mike Sadler commit to MSU, Josh Hemholdt sheds some light on why RR did not offer the in-state guy:
http://www.freep.com/article/20090805/SPORTS06/90805003/1054/Wisconsin-…-
It seems that RR is employing Tressel's "we will recruit nobody else but you," and sticking to his guns. (It should be noted that this approach backfired marvelously for Tressel this year in recruiting only Nick Montana, who recently committed to UW and left Tressel with no elite level QB prospects with whom he had gotten in early. Sam Webb has seen the guy they have committed and he says the QB is laughably bad. Huzzah!)
Rivals recently gave Graham his fourth star (of course, after he committed to The OSU).
There are reports that he has been terrible in camps this summer.
...just wishful thinking on your part. That's OK. Go ahead...
I'm not going to ding you a point just because you're a Buckeye (so long as you don't act like a jackass) - but it'd be nice if you provided something to back up your assertion.
All players who commit to OSU are placed under a magical summer smokescreen that hides their true stellar performance under an illusion of poor play. Only those wearing special TresselVision (TM) performance goggles can observe their actual greatness.

And Gardner was the best qb at the Elite 11...except he wasn't. We all have our biases.
Go to WTKA.com and choose Podcasts up at the top... and then choose Podcasts from this past Monday, or any number of them last week....and you will hear Sam Webb talk repeatedly how Graham sucked at the recent camp. He reportedly was terrible and could barely get the ball to the receivers and backs.
So...Skeye....when I state that "reportedly" well Sam Webb attends many camps and is not one to make judgments that are insane and not based on facts.
I just didnt want to mention his name in this post...but since you accuse me of making stuff up...well there you go lol.
but he went to OSU camp and earned an offer. Maybe that was the Buckeyes getting desperate or he could have legitimately done well. Also the reports from the recent Top Gun camp have been positive:
PQB TAYLOR GRAHAM, 6-4, 211, WHEATON (ILL.) WHEATON NORTH ASSETS: Has excellent height, a pro-style release and good arm strength. WHAT WAS MOST IMPRESSIVE AT CAMP: His follow-through with wrist flick may be the most consistent of all the quarterbacks in the camp. This will help with spin and accuracy.
3) Taylor Graham, Wheaton (Ill.) Wheaton North - Strongest arm at the event and showed improved vision.I haven't heard the Webb podcast but I assume he's talking about the 7-on-7 down in Orlando and he was pretty bad down there.
4) Taylor Graham, Wheaton (Ill.) Wheaton North - didn't go through his progressions, threw too many picks but threw a nice long ball.So it looks more like he's had an up and down summer circuit. Just thought I would put that out there.
No offense mr buckeye, but it's not like OSU was competing against the top dogs for Graham. His best non-OSU offers were from MSU and UCLA (not exactly recruiting powerhouses themselves), 2 schools who have already signed higher rated QB's in the class, and have a 4 star QB in the class before. I doubt either of them were really after him that hard. So, realistically, the other schools chasing your beloved QB were...Duke and Colorado? Nice.
Not every recruit is a big pick-up. Don't make it seem like this one is.
You can see Taylor Graham in the Gridiron Kings thing that showed on ESPNU. They are still replaying Confederations Cup games on ESPNU so I'd expect that they'll show the Gridiron Kings thing again (he threw a nice TD to Austin White).
Unlike the Tressel/Montana situation, Hagerup has an unimpeded road to the starting punter job at Michigan. Montana would have to sit for one or two years behind Pryor.
excellent point
According to the Big House Blog:
http://mbighouse.blogspot.com/
"Kris Pauloski is a kicker/punter from Indy. With Zotan I don't expect Kris to see much playing time. But there seems to be a back story here. RR and staff didn't offer Mike Sadler an in-state punter who just went to MSU. They are going after the nations top punter Will Hagerup who has a number of scholarship offers across the US. Many believe Will's decision will come down between Michigan and OSU. So why didn't Michigan keep Sadler on the line until Hagerup made his decision? I believe they have confidence in Kris Pauloski as Michigan's punter in 2010. Pauloski averaged 38 yards per punt in high school and also had 31 touch backs on kickoffs. Look for him to compete for the kickoff specialist job as well."
Hopefully it is ok to post that over here... seems like interesting info
Are those good numbers for a high school punter?
but here is part of Hagerup's write up on his Scout profile for comparison sake
Hagerup finished his junior season with an average of 41 yards per punt. He was a perfect four of four on field goals with a long of 44 yards. Had a 39 yard punting average and a 58-yard kickoff average as a sophomore on varsity.
They are not too bad at all. Most punters in high school play other positions too so they don't get to practice nearly as much as they do in college. Plus with a little coaching he could probably strech that to 40-42 yards a punt. That's outstanding.
If that is his net average, then yes.
alleged average
Mike Sadler is an All-Area selection who averaged 38.6 yards a punt as a junior. He says he can bench 235-pounds and has a 32-inch vertical jump.
the 31 touchbacks as a kicker indicates a potentially very strong leg...
Throw some Barwis in and some instruction on punting technique and that 38 yd could bump up to 40 yd easily.
back in the day, I used to be a punter and a ton of it has to do with proper technique..... i improved a lot once i learned how and where to hold and strike the ball.
Don't they kick from the 45 in high school? I can't remember.
to the Big House Blog, but for all the crap I take here for suggesting that grammar is important, play along with me:
Go read a few of the posts at mbighouse.blogspot.com . Then tell me if you agree that grammar and spelling is important in presenting a blog. I would argue it's a significant reason why MGoBlog gets the respect it does.
... grammar and spelling are important? Just sayin'.
both are very important in presenting ideas clearly.
However, I would rather re-read the paragraph twice if that means getting new information, as opposed to not knowing anything.
I think that grammar is more important than spelling because it's generally a lot easier to divine what word someone was trying to spell rather than what pronoun goes with who.
If people don't know how to spell a word, they're generally not off by much or they spell it phonetically so, personally at least, I don't think it's that hard to figure out (unless of course they truly butcher the word and it looks closer to a completely different word than what they actually meant, but you can generally figure out if that's the case from the context of the sentence).
Sentences can be very difficult to follow when the grammar is incorrect. If you're unsure of which pronoun goes with which noun, and you suspect that it might've changed multiple times throughout the paragraph, it can be darn near impossible to be sure that you know what someone is writing about.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that he was referring to the grammatical error in the 2nd paragraph of the original post. I'm an engineer, so I could be wrong after not taking an english class since high school, but I'm pretty sure that "spelling and grammar is important" should be "spelling and grammar are important."
you're right. I had just spelling written down initially and I didn't fix the grammar. Kind of defeats my purpose. I own up to it.
Nice.
Wow getting interesting punting info today, didn't know it was possible
To my understanding, Braxton Miller is also a jewel of a QB who heavely favors tosu. 2011 class.
NSFMF, according to Webb.
http://wtka.com/index.php?fuseaction=home.podcasts_sel&id=1906
but I hadn't even heard of Sam Webb until this thread. Word is that the staff is putting all its eggs in the Braxton basket, and that he's essentially a silent OSU verbal. Montana never was considered one.
But I don't see how you could not know who Sam Webb is. You have been a regular here for a while. He has to be mentioned at least a few times a day.
I keep wanting to add a "n" to Hagerup's name to make it Hangerup. What a perfect name for a punter!
Same here.
Don't forget Brendan Gibbons was a punter too. Maybe it's worth putting all your eggs in one basket, when you have a backup plan. IMO
It's not really putting all your eggs into 1 basket when you have a backup plan.
This is what RichRod gets for having "family values". You make a promise to a kid and stick by it and people jump all over you for it.
Yes, possibly a cliche joke on this board but I felt it had to be said.
If it does down come to us and OSU right now on their depth chart they have an outgoing 5th year senior (Thoma) punter and a redshirt freshman (Buchanan) who was listed as the third best punter in 2008 by Rivals (he actually got 3 stars as a punter). We have Zoltan leaving and then if I recall we have a walkon since Gibbons and Wright don't punt (correct me if I'm wrong there). Thus, it would seem that Hagerup would most probably get early playing time if he came here. This can help us.
It also doesn't hurt that Zoltan is a truly beloved player that happens to be one of the best (if not the best) punter in college football right now. I sure wouldn't mind going to school that made someone so good at my position.
Gibbons also punted in high school.
Well, that shoots down the first part of what I said. Maybe if we just don't tell Hagerup he won't notice.
Based on RichRod's style I'm sure that he's more than willing to let Gibbons try his hand (er... foot) at punting, but does anyone know how good he is? Obviously I don't expect him to hit the ceiling of Newsterbaan but if we don't get Hagerup how much of a step down would Gibbons be?
RR obviously thinks he has a good shot at him or is fine with Gibbons punting. If he were really concerned he would have offered Sadler. If we don't get him then Gibbons can punt and we will have another scholarship to give out, unless we take this Pauloski guy someone was talking about.
Isnt this the time someone jumps in and says..."guys...you realize we are talking about a punter, right?!"
This is not that time. And that's because this time is the most boring time of the year... the off season.
So, since we've discussed just about everyone else at length, it's time to discuss the punters. Yeah, we're all just that bored/desperate for football season.
And the fact that Rodriguez has said many times the field position game is very important to him. I didn't think it would be, but that's always a good thing.
By 2010, the offensive will be humming so well, we'll never have to punt. :>)))))
I hope that this does not backfire on RR, as did the competetion for a certain quaterback, between OSU and Michigan. That quarterback being Terelle Pryor. I have a lot of faith in our young QB's, don't get me wrong. But we still had options at QB (kind of) when Pryor commited to OSU. If Hagerup commits to OSU, with Zoltan graduating, and Sadler commited to MSU, who punts for UM in 2010?
What options did we have after Pryor committed to OSU?
Nick Sheridan....
And Threet
Coner
Feagin and that kid who tried to get a car out of RR.
