A case in which the defendants were black or Mexican and poor would have been handled entirely differently from this one, in which the defendants are white and affluent. If the charges proved erroneous, my opinion would of course change as, unlike the defendants in the Duke case, they would not be able to absorb the damage to their reputation in the same way, if at all. But again, I do not harbor any particular resentment for this person. She is clearly a ritual screw-up, and finds herself in good company with the rest of humanity in that regard. |
