OT: OSU football job/internship

Submitted by goblueram on

So my aunt (UM Grad) lives in Columbus, and somehow through work knows Mrs. Tressel.  She just asked me today if I could give her my resume, because she may be able to get me a job or internship (which I would like as a current UM B-School student).  I asked what kind of job she had in mind, which she followed up with "would you be opposed to working for the Ohio State football program in some business position?"  Needless to say, the resume was not sent.

EDIT: many folks seem to think I should look into the opportunity, so I guess what does everyone think?

Football is about fun and watching the games. It is not about affecting how you live your life. Plus you could leak out information (J/K). Why would you not take on the job? I understand you bleed maize and blue, but the potential job you are giving up sounds like a hell of an chance. If you show your skillz there. It could translate into you having the ability to someday maybe work for UofM in the same position. Maybe I am wrong but seems like a golden chance to get involved in the football world.

I think you should reconsider

Agree 100% with this.  It's all about who you know, and the fact your Aunt knows Mrs. Tressel is a connection the OP shouldn't neglect just because of rivalry.

I mean, imagine you end up getting the job, and can later list Tressel as a reference.

Don't pass up on a gift just because it's wrapped in the wrong colors.  Capische?

I know many of you would applaud his actions, but especially in today's economy how could you not send it? Just think of it today if the long-time Ohio Sate grad assistant Bo Schembechler hadn't sent his resume to the Michigan football program.

Smooth move, ex lax!

Dude, it's a hell of an opportunity. OSU is a huge program, it could get your foot in the door throughout the B10 or NCAA business realm.

Then again, competence and sound decision-making would be required to get the most out of what that situation would have to offer..... maybe it doesn't matter after all.

ONCE A DUDE OFFERED ME A MILLION DOLLARS BUT HE HAD AN OHIO STATE HAT ON SO I TOLD HIM TO GO FUCK HIMSELF LOLOLOL

Seriously, don't be an idiot. Send the resume and stop being a retard... there's no award for being the biggest superfan who fucks himself over just because of fucking football

I can't stand seeing Boston teams in the Frozen Four every year. I guess being a fan of Michigan and the CCHA it gets old seeing them and Boston U go to the finals. I'm still really bitter about the Miami loss in the semifinals this year but there was no question about it that BC kicked the shit out of Wisconsin bad.

Do it. OSU has one of the largest athletic departments in the nation. You'll be well connected and have great experience if you don't stay there. If you do stay there, you'll still have a great time working with athletics. Team preference should have zero impact on any sane person.

Good luck with getting the job.

Maybe it's just me, but I feel that a lot of graduates would want to jumpstart their careers almost any way possible. Like I said before, just because it's your biggest rival doesn't mean that you should blow off a chance for a very good job. Put the rivalry behind you in the business world and it will do you a world of good.

What's dirty? The fact that they commit violations that have nothing to do with the business sector of the program? And please explain to me how it has bad business ethics. Is it just because it is OSU and it can be inferred that it is bad, or has there actually been something substantial that suggests that it is bad?

the business sector of the program is where the dirty stuff can happen. although everyone here unfairly accused brad labadie of being incompetent, someone in his position has the ability to purposefully mess around with documents like that. that's why i would say it's a bad idea. and how they haven't gotten caught yet, or even investigated, is a bigger mystery than the mindset of michigan fans who call into valenti's radio show.

For starters because it implies that people who didn't go to Michigan aren't real fans or good fans. It also implies that people who don't go to Michigan are somehow inherently low class. Also, it was made by MSU fans who sought to dismiss the notion that Michigan was simply more popular in the state than they were.

Really, the idea that people who didn't go to a school aren't real fans is just fantastically misguided and pathetic.

maybe it's just that i've met a lot of michigan fans who didn't go to school that have no idea what they are talking about. por ejemplo, 2007 ohio state game. some admitted walmart wolverine kept wondering "why don't we just throw the ball up to mario every time?" saying it half-joking once is one thing. getting legitimately mad at lloyd carr and yelling that a dozen times is another. thats just one example.

the point is, i said i couldn't do it because i wouldn't be happy, and it is my perception that a lot of graduates would say the same thing. nothing is wrong with that statement.

One of the reasons Michigan is what it is today is because for a long time we've been Detroit's football team in a sense.  The Lions have long been meh and a lot of people in Michigan have adopted us as the flagship football program.   They may have never come here, they may never send their kids here, but they follow the program and they root for us.

Look at the Lions, they go 0-16 and the state rolls its eyes and basically goes "Well that's the Lions alright."  We miss two bowls in a row and people are foaming at the mouth.  Part of Michigan's program is that we can get 106000 to 110,000 people into our stadium pretty much ever game and millions more click on their TVs to watch.  I was in China and I was able to turn on the TV at 3 am local time and catch a live game because that Block M is known worldwide.  (Explaining to room service why you need beer and noodles at 2:45 AM is also fun.)

Yes sometimes some elements of our fanbase make me cringe, but we wouldn't be what we are without the massive fanbase behind the program.  You have to take the good with the bad.

If you send it in, like you said, it's not agreeing to take the job if offered. It never hurts to see what's available. The other posters may be right, you might have the opportunity to end up working at Michigan by taking the OSU job now, and I'm sure you'd really be able to help Michigan out someday. It would certainly not be a decision I would want to have to make (taking the job), good luck!

Wow, dude. All you'd have to do is work there for a while and scan opportunities at [anywhere else] where your experience in a similar capacity at an elite football program would almost certainly make you a leading candidate.

FWIW, I had something similar happen to me (except for the OSU thing). I was at a random dinner at my best friend's house -> they had other guests -> "send me your resume" -> internship -> job -> thriving career. That was 10 years ago.

Don't be an idiot. In fact, negged for being an idiot.

I still regret not getting that recent job at UM in Athletic Media Relations, but I'm not giving up on it.  I've e-mailed Bruce Madej numerous times about at least volunteering in some capacity to learn the ropes.  Hell, I'm even going to be an usher this season for the experience (obviously, not the money).  If it leads to a future job in the AD someday, then it will have paid off.

Seriously, man, take the job.  It's not everyday you get offered a job in this economy.  Trust me, after the hundreds of resumes I've already submitted...

It's brutal.  That's a golden opportunity at your doorstep.

Is it your "dream job"? No. Certainly not, (I'm naturally presuming). On the other hand, the OSU Athletic Department is one of the best in the country. They have one of the largest budgets in the country, (bigger than U-M's). By all accounts, it is very well-managed, and you could learn a thing or two.
