Salute to Jack Tatum. RIP

Sad news from California that Jack Tatum has died after a courageous battle with mutliple health problems including severe diabetes that took his leg some years ago.

Tatum was a ferocious hitter, and earned (cultivated?) that reputatation in the NFL.

As our rival on the field for OSU, I honestly don't ever recall Tatum drawing a single personal foul or ever once laying a dirty hit on a Michigan player.  Indeed, while he was involved in some frightening plays in the NFL, I always marveled at his skill.  He was a tough player, not a dirty player.

Rest in Peace, Jack Tatum.  You were one of the great ones.

to Darryl Stingley, who became paralyzed from the chest down as a result of a hit from Tatum in a preseason game in 1978. Stingley died in 2006, and Tatum never once spoke to him after the hit. Tatum always said he had nothing to apologize for, and apparently couldn't be bothered to even meet with Stingley.

No mourning or regrets from me for Tatum's death. Rot in hell, Assassin.

That is actually incorrect.  He apparently attempted twice to apologize personally to Stingley, but his family did not permit him to see Stingley.  However, it came after those initial comments that probably cut deep into the Stingley family.

When Stingley died in 2007 at the age of 55, his son, Derek, told the Chicago Tribune that his father had forgiven Tatum in his mind, though the Stingley family felt any attempts by Tatum to apologize were tied to him promoting one of his books. Tatum defended his style of play and the hit, but also wrote in one of his books that he was "shattered" by the result of the play.

Jack Tatum was a nasty hitter with big time ability. He played like one would have expected a Raiders player to have played in his era. It's unfortunate the outcome of his hit on Darryl Stingley and more unfortunate that after he came to his senses and wanted to follow through in an expression of regret that he could not. It is sad that for such a great player this is his legacy and that, now in passing, the two are so intricately linked.

I’m not going to beg forgiveness,” he told the Bergen County (N.J.) Record in 2003. “That’s what people say: You never apologized. I didn’t apologize for the play. That was football.”

Tatum sounds like a Woody disciple in those comments; it's not like he never tried to express regret but after such hard comments about the game and the play he was turned away.

It's unfortunate on many levels for both families.

Bo was an exception in many ways. I have trouble with Woody Hayes, I did as a kid and I do now. It makes so little sense for me for someone to hate an entire state the way he did. He was borderline insane and unfortunately he transmitted that hate to an entire generation of ohio people. I am sorry when anyone dies, but Tatum was not a nice guy, he played dirty in an era that was much more loose than today. He was dirty back in that era, he would be banned today after any one of those hits seen in the above video, he was one of the people that forced the NFL to crack down on that type of stuff.

that we are taught that such violence is not only acceptable, but necessary in football. It's not. You might not be so conciliatory towards this style of play if an 'accident' like the one which paralyzed Darryl Stingley happened to a loved one of yours. You're right, accidents happen on the football field, but when you go after someone the way Tatum did the chance of an accident increases, not to mention the severity of the injury.

I'm not attempting to villify Mr. Tatum, but his efforts towards bringing closure to the Stingley incident is lacking. As stated, his only attempts to do so also coincidentally occurred when he was pushing a book. To me is 'effort' indicates a lack of remorse; he's using football as a justification to purposefully injure another person, and that's not right.

To answer your question about a Michigan safety hitting hard like Tatum did, we had one: Daydrion Taylor. While at the time of his hit on the Penn State TE -his name escapes me- the play was a definite "YES!!!", the more time moves on, the more sadness and regret I feel about the hit; it ended the careers of both men. It irrevocably changed their lives; if Taylor had a chance to relive that moment, do you think he would do the same thing again? I don't think so.

I will also say this; I'm 47. As a younger guy I was all about the violence and now I'm a tad mellowed out.

You have to play this game like somebody just hit your mother with a two-by-four. ~Dan Birdwell

There is nothing in this sport that is different wrt this sort of injury and the Taylor Mays, Ronnie Lott and  John Lynch style of play that brought it on from the time that Tatum played (and I admit it...hopefully Cam Gordon lays the wood this year like Law or Taylor...).  Sometimes I wonder at myself...

I'm old enough to remember Tatum as a pro but too young to remember or think of him as a Buckeye. All I know was that growing up he was considered the epitome of a viscious hitter and was the best at intimidating recievers coming across the middle. By all accounts the Stingley hit was legal.

He played at a different time and it is hard to judge now. Also the salaries at the time he played weren't what they are today. To make money and sell books he marketed the whole assassin thing which certainly didn't (doesn't) help in the sympathy department. The man suffered through the consequences of diabetes for several years so I don't think it is too much to offer some condolences for a guy that played hard and left it all on the field, Stalin comparisons notwithstanding.

Making baseless accusations about someone, and referring to them as a "religious biggot" is certainly classly. I'd say the second you started typing you lost any sort of moral high ground you had.

When I made that post I understood the irony of using "fucking" as well as "Jesus Christ" in a post telling others to have some class. I was well aware of my word choices, and they were not only appropriate, considering the absolute disgusting behavior exhibited on this thread, but they were, IMO, necessary.

There are no words in the English language strong enough to properly convey the disgust I felt while reading some of the comments.

First off, I didn't call you a "religious biggot", I called the act of using Jesus's name as an epithet an act of religious bigotry. You know "hate the sin, love the sinner".

Secondly, I didn't assign any characteristics to you except to assume that because you used Jesus's name as an epithet that you weren't Christian.

Thirdly, I am quite calm and in no "frenzy".

Fourthly, my "outrage" (your word) is not "faux".

Second, "shyster" is, explicity, an insult. Just like "kyke", "spic", "towel-head", or any other term you want to come up with. Last Prophet did not use the term "Jesus Christ" as an insult - it's an exclamation, or, if you're being specific, an invocation. "Shyster", in common usage (though not at it's source) leans on Jewish stereotypes of usury, cheapness, etc. I can't think of any such negative stereotypes associated with the name of Christianity's savior.

You chose to ignore the forest for the trees, and ended up attacking someone whose entire point was that people should be more considerate. You chose to ignore what he was saying, and take umbrage with how he said it. I think that is silly.
